Re: Need help, please!

Johan,

I dont' know if there is indonesian stemmer at all but I'd suggest
ask Martin Porter (snowball.sotrceforge.net).
Also, read http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/457398.html and you
probably might ask authors about stemmer.

Also, there is very crude but working way - collect all endings (most
significant) and write simple program which stem word using most longest
ending from the collection.

Johan,

I don't know of a stemmer for Indonesian, and actually doubt much if one
exists. I think Oleg's idea might be best - to try and make a simple one
yourself based on a limited class of the very commonest endings.

Re: Need help, please!

Actually, I found a paper
http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/457398.html

Abstract: Information retrieval tools and search engines have mainly been
leveraging research results and technologies developed for the English language
. In this paper we report the issues and obstacles we met in the process of
designing and developing a search engine for the Indonesian language, as well
as our progress and results. The results include original contributions such
as a grammar for stemming Indonesian words ...
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I suggest Johan contact with the author and write a nice contribution
to Snowball project ! It should be in mainstream of thesis

Finnish stemmer

I will shortly be adding a new stemmer for Finnish to the Snowball website.
The snowball script was writtem some time ago, but I am only now in the
process of describing it algorithmically.

Finnish is a non-Indo-European language, so this is something quite new.

Richard, it may be appropriate now to say something about our intentions to
switch servers away from sourceforge

Martin, what's the reason you want to move from sourceforge ?
Just interested.

Re: Finnish stemmer

Oleg,

I should really leave Richard to answer that one, but the reasons are that
(a) the Geocrawler side of things is slow and unreliable, and (b) on a local
server we'll more control of everything. We planning to arrange things so
that the sourceforge htpp addresses continue to work, so the change will be
invisible to everyone except the developers.

Mailing list and CVS move

As Martin intimated, he and I have decided to move the snowball hosting
from SourceForge to a host more directly under our control (ie, on which
we have unrestricted shell access, amongst other things). This will
allow us to provide better access to the mailing list archives (the
current ones being unavailable for a significant proportion of the time,
and encumbered with adverts when they are available), have direct access
to the CVS repository which helps when moving things around, and make my
website update scripts convenient and reliable.

The sourceforge project will be left, but will simply contain pointers
to the new location.

The new mailing lists have been created: I will be configuring them and
copying the subscriber list over this evening. I will then post a
message closing down the mailing lists, and announcing the new address.

I will also be copying the CVS repository to the new location (and
pruning it of some large tarball files which are no longer current).
Anonymous CVS checkout will be supported.

I hope this doesn't cause too much trouble to anybody: I will do
everything I can to make the move as smooth as possible.

Welcome to the new list

Welcome to the newly moved Snowball-discuss mailing list. This email
should contain the address for posting new messages and the URL for
setting your options in its footer, but just in case:

Send new messages to <snowball-discuss <at> lists.tartarus.org>, instead of
the old lists.sourceforge.net address.

Unfortunately, the passwords used to administer mailing list options
have been reset: you will need to request your password to be emailed to
you in order to change any options. You can do this by going to:
http://lists.tartarus.org/mailman/subscribe/snowball-discuss?info=username
(Where username is your email address), and clicking on the
"Email my password to me" button.

All other aspects of the mailing list should function as before. I will
be bringing the Archive of messages up shortly.

Please email me directly (at richard <at> tartarus.org) if you have any problems.

Testing the new Snowball discuss ...

Just testing. There is a cvs commit waiting to be done that will include a
Finnish stemmer and enhancements elsewhere following the useful work of
Frederick Brualt.

Richard,

Do you need the full message archive I put together?
