Linrad-02.24

Hello all,

This version has two bug corrections.
These errors are fixed:
1) During the setup for using SDR-14 the soundcard
A/D input was opened. This would sometimes lead
   to an error exit.
2) When a very narrow baseband filter was selected
the associated time for Morse waveforms could become
longer than the storage time for the baseband waveform.
Particularly if the user had set the minimum value
for this parameter. On my system I could only see
the screen freeze but segfaults have been reported.

There are code simplifications in the noise blanker
and at a few other places, but nothing that the user
should notice except perhaps for smoother operation
of the speech-processor simulation in the tx setup menu.

Bug reports are welcome. As far as I know all reported
bugs are corrected so if you find an old bug, please
report it again.

Not Linrad - G3SBI H-Mode Mixer as tested by PA3AKE

Hi All,

If you like to know more about D’MIXER that removed
the mixer from the most critical stages in a receiver
see what Martein Bakker, PA3AKE, has just published; a
magnificent document regarding his evaluation of Colin
Horrabin’s "H" mode mixer under various test
conditions and using many different transformers and
active devices. He spent thousands of Euros on proper
test equipment, and as many hours obtaining his
published results. This is the real way we should
do measurement but certainly it requires a lot of
investment in $$$$ and working time and also
knowledge. Martein’s document has a lot of pages with
a lot of information and it is a good reading for
peoples that know what he is talking about and also
for people that want to learn. This is a sharing of
information and knowledge that sometimes is missing in
our amateur radio environment. As Harold Johnson,
W4ZCB, stated: I commend the read to your attention,
LOTS of meat in the pages. You can get the document
at:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~martein/pa3ake/mixers-overview5.pdf

I am sure you will see that Harold is right, there is
a lot of meat to chew and digest too. The comparison
is not only associated to the FST3125 switches but
there is a very interesting comparison with modern

Watzo for Windows

Hi all,

Watzo-01.00 is now available for Windows.

Max load (float format) from the WSE units
(25 MB/s) can be received with Windows 2000 on
a PentiumIII at 650 MHz but not on a PentiumII
at 350 MHz.

Half load (16 bit format = MMX routines in Linrad)
can be received with Windows 98 on the 650 MHz
PentiumIII but not on the PentiumII. Windows 2000
can handle half load on the 350 MHz PentiumII.

Linux (with the 2.6.18 kernel) is better. It runs
on a 133 MHz Pentium although the memory is too
small for efficient usage

I have no idea where the limit might be for
Windows XP. I only have it on modern laptops
where it is ok for watzo.

Test pilot alert!

Hi All,

There are new versions for linrad and watzo available
for download now.

The network should work both under Linux and Windows
98, 2000 and XP. It would be fun to know whether it works
under Vista as well....

This time I have verified operation under old and new
Linux as well as under all the Windows versions that I
have access to and I made various fixes to ensure
both Linrad and watzo run under all the different
operating systems.

I hope all the problems I introduced by the change
to a multi-threaded structure are fixed by now.
Please report any bugs - also old ones in case you
find them. (I am not aware of any remaining ones.)

I would appreciate if as many as possible of the
Linrad users would check Linrad-02.25 for bugs,
errors and inconveniences extra carefully. I
would like to finish the computer oriented
problems.....

Floor 1.#J --- Re: [linrad] Test pilot alert!

Thanks very much again, Sir Leif!

You have corrected the audio problem with 2.22 - 2.24 before I managed
to make a comment about it. Actually I had no speakers attached, but I
got an OVERRUN indication after a while, and a CPU use of near 98%.
Then I noticed that you had removed the above wlr-2.2x versions ....

wlr-2.25 runs fine; however I see a "1.#J" display in the Floor level after
pressing the Amplitude Margins (A) button while wlr is up and running.

During Summer_Es I will do some real-life 50 MHz tests again.

Ooooh!! This turns out to be an error I just introduced.
If you run the seconf fft on an uncalibrated system
the variables fft1_first_inband and fft1_last_inband
become un-initialized. Sorry.

Set them like this:
fft1_first_inband=0;
fft1_last_inband=fft1_size-1;
first thing in void set_fft1_endpoints(void), row 783
in fft1.c

Both become zero automatically when not initiated at all.
As a result the noise blanker might not work properly
if there is a strong signal close to the selected frequency.
This error was not present in previous versions.

Thanks for the bug report, Zaba. I will wait for about
a week for more bug reports before I upload the corrected
version.

Watzo-01.01 for Windows.

Hi All,

The links that should allow download of win-wtz01-01.zip
were incorrect. They were giving the previous version
win-wtz01-00.zip. This is now corrected.

Hello Leif,
congrats for your continuous improvement of LINRAD.
About Watzo, i have installed it on my UBUNTU 6.10 (X11),
but i have not idea on how to set it correctly .
Any help?

The below is what I wrote on the Linrad development page.
At the moment there is no more info available. Start
with a small vertical size (limit the number of lines)
and use a modest size for the fft2 transforms. That will
work on most computers. Use F1 to get info. Edit
par_userint (or delete it) to change screen setup.

For real usage with a large screen and large fft2
transforms you will need a modern computer with a
lot of memory because otherwise Watzo will have its
data in the swap file on the hard disk.

73

Leif / SM5BSZ

The watzo program uses a lot of memory if a large vertical screen size is selected in combination with large
FFT2 transforms because the full averaged power spectrum is kept for twice as many lines as those
displayed on screen. With a transform size of 131072 each waterfall line will allocate 1 megabyte for a
single channel system and 5 megabytes for a two-channel system. It is possible to limit the number of lines
to avoid having data swapped to the hard disk.

Watzo uses temporary files that may use up to 16 gigabytes of hard disk space to store data over long periods
of time. Scrolling back in time becomes very slow if the main data is swapped to disk.

Starting 2-25

Hello Lief,

Thanks for the evolutionary software.

I am having trouble getting WLR2-25 started, after I use the default
settings
The screen is normal, I just can not activate it. Delta-44 is selected,
for in and out.
WLR2-24 starts up nicely with a left mouse button click.

Using a 2 GHz celeron HP pavilion computer with delta 44

Thanks Stan, W1LE Cape Cod
