Happy New Year for svgalib_1.9.24

Wishing you all a happy continuation of the new year!

I just noticed that svgalib 1.9.24 has been out for
about a week. Most likely it will take care of some
earlier problems, and hopefully not introduce too
many new ones. I have not tried it yet. My Linrad-
interface with real-world signals is still poorly
connected, so I hope to set that as first priority
for 2006. It would be fun to know how many stations
world-wide are running 'Linrad' on a daily basis.

Good luck to you all! 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA/2

Re: Happy New Year for svgalib_1.9.24

Hi, Zaba, et al,

Happy New Year!

I found that 1.9.24 got rid of a couple of BAD Bugs:

1. The VESA driver in 1.9.23 was broken when used with PCI-Express ATI
RV370 (Radeon X300 PCI)

2. The R128.c driver module was defective.

The combination of these two bugs meant that my Radeon cards would not
work with 1.9.23 unless corrective patches were installed.

Pierre ON5GN figured out what was wrong with the Radeon driver and before
1.9.24 came out sent me a revised driver that worked GREAT with my Radeon
cards and 1.9.23!

Now, with 1.9.24 the Radeon Driver works FINE with no need for patches,
and my Radeon cards are very happy [as am I].

Matan and Pierre/ON5GN are to be congratulated!

I run Linrad every day that I am on/listening to the radio.
Unfortunately, that is not every day. But it is usually several times a
week, mostly during the weekends. I hope that within 10 years it will be
a daily thing ;)

73, and Happy New Year,

Linrad-01.35: Easier installation of soundcards with a modified setad.c module.

Hi all,

The set up of soundcards with Linrad-01.35 ( option U in the main menu ) can
be been made easier if one uses a modified ( more verbose ) version of the
setad.c module.

Following functionalities have been added in this modified setad.c module:

1. If there is enough space on the screen ( vgamode 12 or 13 required ) , the
right half of the screen is used to display information about the current
status of the sound-driver.

This allows the user to see the link that has been made by the sound-driver
between the physical soundboard and the different /dev/dsp* numbers , and
help him to select the correct device for Linrad.

It has been designed to work with ALSA and OSS/Linux

2.Additional information is written to the soundboard_init.log file:
-Information about the status of the current sound-driver and its configured
soundboards ( same information as in 1)
-Information about the current settings of the first two mixers .

This allows a user who can not use vgamodes 12 or 13 to use the log file to
find the same information as in 1.
It also has has the benefit that the soundboard_init.log file now contains
more information about possible set-up problems and can be used as a more
efficient tool for information exchange and assistance between Linrad users.

The modified setad.c module routine has been developed and tested on a SUSE

Delta 44 causing interrupt sharing problems

Dear all,

I'm hard at work to get a Delta44 being recognized on my PIII 500MHz PC with Mandrake 9.1 and OSS. (398g)

Linrad runs happily with the AC97 as I/O device but so far the the Delta 44 is only "seen" in the OSS config menu
(after "soundconf") on the top part of the screen together with the AudioPCI97. I save and exit from this
menu after selecting autodetect soundcards.
OSS notes that one or more PCI soundcards share their IRQ with another card, which may cause problems.
It suggests in my case (non-functional PCI soundcard) to use BIOS PCI/PnP to allocate a private IRQ for the
device and to look in lib/oss/docs/README.Irqsharing for more info.
**At first, this file was empty but it appears that I had 2 OSS versions running (one in lib/oss and the other
in usr/lib/oss), so I deleted the latter, which contained the oldest OSS-version and now these help files
contain text and advice, as are similar files mentioned lower in this note.
OSS continues: the following IRQ numbers are shared with a non-sound device: 15 and 47.

After "soundon" the LIMITED OSS driver license states: the following OSS driver is required for my current
hardware config: ENVY24 and WARNING: some of the devices failed to initialize. See lib/oss/soundon.log
for more info.
BTW: I read in one of the files that the OSS demo license contains the ENVY24-option.
Also it states: some common system setup errors were detected: 1) PCI interrupt not allocated by BIOS,
please look at lib/oss/errors.log for troubleshooting instructions.

So far, I pulled out the Ethernet card from its PCI slot and replaced it by the Delta 44 (which came from
another slot) but this made no change... (see higher)

So I remain with the advice in the different OSS help/log files:
-Put PnP OS to NO, OFF, DISABLED on the PCI/PnP setup screen.
-Put Plug&Play OS option to NO in the Boot setup screen.

Where can I find these setup screens? Does this ring a bell to other Linrad-players?

OSS drivers for the Delta 410

Can anyone tell me if the Delta 410 and the Delta 44 use the same OSS
drivers? I have an OSS license for the Delta 44 and have an opportunity to
buy a Delta 410 cheaply. Are there any real performance differences that I
should be aware of?

Regards

Delta 44 interrupt sharing problems solved

Dear,
this mail to inform that my Delta 44 problems are solved.
4Front Technologies suggested to try with the newer driver for the proper Linux 24 Kernel, which I installed.
Unfortunately, I got more and less understandable error messages so I stuck to the driver for the ported
Linux 22 kernel. (see initial mail)
I found what OSS suggested to do in the BIOS screens: I fixed the IRQ addresses and disabled the PnP OS.

I now see both audio boards with their parameters with ossmix and in the right order.
Linrad-01.35 works as before on the old Drake TR7 audio output (with attenuator and HPF, as described by
Leif) but now on the P3 500MHz.
Next on the project list will be setting up the Time Machine on 40m with the hb filters and I/Q output and
optimizing the Delta 44 parameters for this configuration. Does anyone have a detailed description of
what these parameters mean?
Midwhile, I've received the pulser IC's (from RS Components that have finally understood to sell parts to
private persons) so I can finalize this part.

Thanks in advance for any feedback,

Michel, ON7EH

Linrad-02.00

Hi All,

Multithreaded Linrad is now available for normal receiving
functions under Linux and Microsoft Windows.

Support and side functions are generally untested and may
produce different kinds of errors.

There is a modest penalty in going from a single thread
with tight timing control to a multi-threaded structure.
To run a specific combination of soundcards with
identical processing parameters Linrad-02.00 will need
a somewhat faster CPU and some more memory compared to
the Linrad-01.xx series.

There is a big penalty for using Microsoft Windows. A much
faster CPU is required......(But today that is not any
problem at all.)

            --- Unsolved problems ---

1) Linrad can not read or write to the parallel port.
I know it can be solved. Others have done it so I hope
someone else can make the necessary additions:-)

2) Delta44, Lynx Two and presumably all other 32 bit
capable soundcards only give 16 bits. The reason is
most probably that I open in WAVE_FORMAT_PCM with the
WinAPI waveInOpen function. Here is what Microsoft
writes:

R: [linrad] Linrad-02.00

Hi Leif

This is a good new for me, as I'm still guessing the simplest Linux distro
to use on my hd...., so I'll be glad to test it, but on the Linrad web pages
I was not able to find any new about Linrad 02.00, as soon as it will be
available please inform me I'll be glad to be a tester as Linux is good but
I've not to much time in order to be quite expert with sw setup and so
on.....:-(
Hope to read some new soon..
