knoppix 4.02 and linrad

Hallo everybody,
I'm a new on this list and interested in test linrad with my Ham PC (PIII
256 MB); unfortunatly the live CD by W3SZ doesn't load the kernel, I don't
know why. So I tested some Linux distro and some live CD.
I.E. Linspire does load the kernel and the live CD does OK, but the AI9NL
live CD does have some problem: finally this morning I downloaded the
Knoppix 4.02 version and that loads all ok, but I'm not able to put on the
linrad sw. I'm sorry but I'm not a Linux user, just the minimum as I've not
so much time in order to be expert with commands.... so can I have any help
in order to put together a liveCD iith Knoppix 4.02 and linrad, or to load
Linrad after the Knoppix is OK on the PC?

Many thanks in advance to every help and hope to be able to test and use the
Linrad SW ASAP.

Re: knoppix 4.02 and linrad

Hi, Alessandro,

Did you try re-downloading the live CD to make sure it wasn't corrupted during the download?

If you downloaded the OSS version of the Live CD [I made both OSS and ALSA versions], there is a problem in that
the free version of OSS that I put on the CD has expired. I made a new version of that Live CD a couple of weeks
ago with a new copy of OSS on it that should be good for another few [??6??] months, but I don't recall if I ever
got around to uploading that to Leif's website, where it resides. I can't check from work, and I am at work as
I type this, so I can't check to see what version of the file I have on the website right now. I will check later
and put the new version of the file there if it is not there already some time in the next few days. I will post
to the list when I am sure the new version is there, and also sure that it works after being downloaded. It is
possible that I already did all this already and just don't remember.

If you would tell us exactly where the Linve CD install stops, and what the last text on the screen is that you
see, we'd be more likely to be able to figure out the problem and offer some help.

If you see something like "Kernel panic" as the error message [as your statement that the 'Kernel won't
load' might imply], I would think that you may have a corrupted copy of the Live CD. Other messages might
imply that the Live CD doesn't recognise some of your hardware. Without more information, its not
possible to guess what the problem is.

Perhaps some real Linux gurus [which I am defintely NOT] lurking about will have more thoughts on this. But
please send us more info so we hopefully be of more help. Send it to the list, not to me personally, so you get
some better input than that which I can offer.

In terms of trying to add Linrad to another version of Linux, if you go to Leif's Linrad website [which
usually comes up as the first listing when I Google 'Linrad'], Leif's instructions will walk you through
installing everything you need to run Linrad onto another version of Linux.

R: [linrad] Re: knoppix 4.02 and linrad

Hi Roger,

many thanks for your answer.

When I wrtote that Linux does not load the kernel I mean that in the first
screen when I have to write "knoppix" or to push "enter" button, I see the
phrase "linux loading...." but no more happens and the PC stops at all; I
made several different tests checking different loading manners but nothing
happens: all stops!
Now I tried to make a different ISO CD, with OSS on board and now it loads
but now I have difficult in the Linux check of sound card....and on the
Linrad sound check... but now it is a different error and now I can search
info's on the Leif site...

I'll do different tests and I'll read all I will find about Linrad.

The fact is that I'm trying to make tests with a Knoppix live CD with Linrad
on board in order to hear the PC sounding, and then I planned to make a
stable installation of some Linux or Knoppix distro on a second Hard Disk on
the PC.... step by step...

Anyway my PC is PIII with 880 MHz CPU, 256 Mb RAM , Video Matrox Millennium
16 Mb and audio on the motherboard CMI 8738.

So many thanks for this first help, I'll do a second ISO of the CD live with
Alsa and I'll made new checks and I'll make you informed.

Best 73 to you and every list member.

linrad setup error

Hallo boys,

after a Sunday afternoon passed in download ISO's and check them I was able
to make a good CD_live of W3SZ version of Linrad and now my PC load all OK.
The new problem I found is that when I am in the S mode and the program ask
the parameters, I tried the suggested or to change, but always I receive
this message: "Speed far too slow. Try less demanding FFT! Press any key.
Accept...." I made a lot of test but I've always the same answer: I see the
PC making calculations but at the end I have always this answer. Do I make
any error? Or not?
I read all the mailing list message but I did not find any similar question,
and moreover I didn't find any error message list in order to understand
what can I do to solve this?
May I have any help from someone that had the same?

I remember my PC is PIII 870 MHz CPU, 256 RAM, video Matrox 4000 16 Mb.

Thanks in advance from a newbie/Elmer on this side....

This means that the first fft runs too slowly.
This is because you have selected a too narrow bandwidth that causes
a too large size for the fft - but since you have a PIII this should not
happen easily. My guess is that you ask for too much memory which
causes swapping to the hard disk. Execution then becomes really slow.....

There is a parameter "Use mlockall to prevent swapping?" in the general
parameters setup. (You can change it in par_userint with a text editor)

To minimize memory requirements, deselect second fft and AFC.
Set minimum fft1 storage time and minimum baseband storage time.
Once Linrad starts you will get a message on screen that shows how
large data areas you allocate. 256MB should be plenty, but maybe
some other process is running that uses up memory or cpu time?
I do not know anything about the Knoppix live CD. Maybe it uses
a RAM disk?

R: [linrad] Re: linrad setup error

Hi Leif,

many thanks for suggestions, but I think some problem could be due to the
fact that knoppix is a live_cd? And so I cannot write on the files? I'm
doing some tests, I'll inform you of the results.
Anyway I linked your and other Linrad sites to my webpage:
http://www.eco-lavoro.com/i0skk/linrad.htm is the page on my website.

Best 73 for now.

Re: linrad setup error

Hi, Leif et al,

Knoppix Live DOES use a ramdisk. I do not know how large this generally
is, but I believe Knoppix does some calculations when installing to decide
how big to make this.

I have uploaded a new version of the OSS version of the Linrad Knoppix
Live CD to the website:

http://www.sm5bsz.com/w3sz/knoppixlink.htm

Interestingly [and unfortunately] with this version of the CD which uses
Knoppix 3.8 and Linrad-01.34 and the latest OSS version, the soundcard
selection routine in Linrad is unable to open 4 channels for input such as
is necessary for two receive channels each with I/Q receive. I did not
have this problem with the prior CD and do not know why this has
occurred. It works OK for I/Q sampling of ONE receive channel.

I will check into this as time permits.

Live CD

Hi, All,

I should have also noted in my last post that before posting the new iso
file as 'available', I downloaded the new Live CD from the website and
burned it to CD and verified that it does boot, etc OK. There is just the
issue with opening 4 channels for input as noted.

Linrad Knoppix Live CD Soundcard Issue

Hi, All,

I got the new Linrad Knoppix Live CD to give me 4 channels of input [I and
Q for H and V] by re-ordering the soundcards using soundconf. Once I did
that to put the Delta44 first, choosing '0' gave me the 4 channels I
needed.

Previously I had found that with some installations [but not all] I needed
to put the Delta44 first to get things working, and this is just another
example of that.

Having made that change post installation [by running
/usr/lib/oss/bin/./soundconf], everything works fine with the new OSS
version of the Linrad Knoppix Live CD downloaded this afternoon from the
website whose URL was given on an earlier email from today.

R: [linrad] Re: linrad setup error

Hi Roger,

I received your last email and now I'm downloading the new live_cd. I'll try
later on the PC.
What is not so clear for me, is that maybe the live_cd with a PIII cannot
function , and in the case it could be better to make a fixed installation?
Another further question to the mirror friends is: in the case I've to put
the fixed Linux on my HD, what is better for Linrad and with my machine?
Taking into account that I don't want to be so expert in Linux system
management, but mainly in using software for Radio, for experiment. Up to
now I'm involved in QRSS and QRPp beacon listening and I want to check if
Linrad could be a good tool for this too. Yes I know Linux need to be
learned, but I've no so much time for Radio... sig :-(
Any suggestion is welcome! Thanks!
