Positivember

Hi, all,

At my SCNA talk this year, I put forward the challenge to spend a
month being positive. November was selected as "positivember." I wrote
a blog post and put it up today. Please consider taking part and help
spread the word.

Here's the blog post:

Craftsmen at TechEd 2010 in Berlin next week?

Hi everyone,

Any fellow craftsmen attending TechEd 2010 in Berlin next week? If
that is the case I'd love to get in touch with you and have nice talks
over a beer or two. So please, contact me off-list if you're
interested.

Thanks and regards

Re: Craftsmen at TechEd 2010 in Berlin next week?

I won't be at TechEd, but I will be at Ordev next week running a Koans and Katas workshop, plus sessions on
Craftsmanship and Delivering. The following week I'll be at the SQE conference in Orlando. If anyone is at
either, say hi!

Hey Cory,

Unfortunate that you're busy next week, but seems to be a nice place
to be as well. Have fun!

[Off topic?] Tip on Java based rich client frameworks?

Hi!

We need to build a rich client using Java. What would you suggest as a
good framework today?

We are considering

* Netbeans RCP
* Eclipse RCP
* JIDE - http://www.jidesoft.com/
* JGoddies - http://www.jgoodies.com/
* SwingLabs - http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Javadesktop/SwingLabsSwingX

Open source and Maven support are some additional requirements. Do you
have any nice tip to share?

If you feel that this is off topic, please answer me off list.

All the best!
Thomas

Re: [Off topic?] Tip on Java based rich client frameworks?

Eclipse RCP has the advantage of extensive support for expansion through its plug-in architecture and has lots of developers who understand how to develop plug-ins for it.  On top of that, most of the basic navigation and edit features already exist and usually only need reskinning for your app.  It reduces the number of custom plug-ins needed.

Re: [Off topic?] Tip on Java based rich client frameworks?

Hi,

I am agree with Kelly on Eclipse RCP features.

Eclipse RCP plugin architecture (built on top of OSGI) allows to build, on a easy way, modular apps and it has a big ecosystem of tools and developers. The main drawback is the learning curve; it is harder than Swing (at the very beginning)

Have you took a look to Griffon? Its a Grails like application framework to build desktop apps based on Swing.

Cheers,

PD: Sorry about my English :(

Giveaway for SC Groups - SC 2011 Calendar

If you organize a software craftsmanship group and you think your
members would enjoy a Software Craftsmanship 2011 calendar (that you
may have seen discussed on twitter this week), NimblePros would like
to offer some free ones for you to give out. You can learn more about
the calendars here:
http://bit.ly/SC_2011

If you run a group and want to give one of these away in the next
month or three, please email me at ssmith@... They're not
back from the printer yet and we won't ship preorders out until early
December but you're welcome (after confirming with me) to just take
the name of the winner and pass it along to us and we'll mail it
directly to the winner.

Cheers,
Steve
