Would whoever owns this account please configure your group settings to not send emails? I'm tired of my
inbox filling up with messages from "The Webmaster of www.bigtimebiz.biz" stating that you don't
receive emails from my domain ebery time I post a message to the group.

Yahoo Groups, as originally purchased from E-groups, is an email-based forum. If you don't want to receive
emails, then you can configure your group account to not receive emails.

Thank you.

Mark

P.S. The same goes for those of you with "out of office" auto-replies.

Agile Finance

I need a few bullet points on what can be gained with taking agile development into account with company/project financials, where the result is an improved Balance Sheet. I remember, for example, that one could capitalize a larger percentage of development costs. I also remember financial charts that showed that incremental releases resulted in more ROI.

  1. Can someone point me to a couple of good and authoritative articles on the subject?
  2. There was a really good book that came out a few years ago but I seem to have misplaced it and I can't remember its name. I just remember the paperback cover was sky blue.
  3. Or, just for the proposal summary that I'm working on, can someone just list a couple of bullet points I can use to claim that changing how Finance accounts for agile projects will result in goodness?
Thanks!

Michael

Scrum Training Materials

Somewhere, someone mentioned to me that there are Scum training materials available via the Scrum Alliance website or some other resource. I am looking to lead Scrum training seminars at wok and would prefer not to reinvent the wheel. Does anyone know about this or where I can find good curricula and outlines?

Scrum in non-co-located, non-overlapping teams? (was: Meeting minutes for stand up meetings

Can such a team even do "Scrum"? (genuine question) They can't do daily stand up meetings - since their time doesn't overlap. Presumably there are other aspects of self-organization in Scrum which they can't effectively do since they don't have overlapping time? How is that supposed to work?

(My reason for asking is my team are geographically dispersed although they only cover three timezones so they do overlap in time - therefore I'm interested to hear what impact on Scrum people think a lack of co-location, a shift in timezones, and a language barrier all have)

How do we get senior management teams truly, actively engaged?

Hi,

I've been a full-time scrum master for the last few years but there's a problem that I eventually keep
bumping up against. After some initial discomfort, management teams seem to come to terms with scrum by
viewing it as a 'specialist team thing'.

I'd appreciate hearing anyone's experience on how they got typically time-poor, already-busy and
stressed managers to reflect on their own working practice and start to at least consider different
approaches, values and behaviours?

The group I'm thinking about would be 'managers of product owners', IT Directors and traditional project
and programme managers.

Steve

Scrum of Scrum - new discussion board

Hi all.

I've decided to walk my own talk,
and have set up a new discussion board - "Scrum of Scrum".

The idea is to allow people to discuss Scrum using a Scrum-like framework.

Hopefully this will promote healthy discussions, while demostrating the idea behind scrum in a practical
- and fun - manner.

I'm hoping some of you will be willing to join me in this venture!

I welcome anybody to join - both experienced facilitators willing to help others as well as newcommers to
Scrum looking to brush up their skillsets, as either PO's SM's or Team members.

I've set it up as a Trello Orgainzation with a set of boards (This is a chance to say big Thank You to the Trello
team for providing a wonderful framework - keep it up!)

Anyone with a Trello account can access the board - it can be accessed through a web browser or through the
Trello iPhone and Android apps, so there are no excuses not to join - Win a chance to be the first :)

The main entry point is here:
https://trello.com/scrumofscrum

The discussion board is here:
https://trello.com/b/4ZTlEVa7

Looking forward to seeing you there!
Avi

p.s. Here is the description for the main discussion board - hopefully it'll shed some light on the idea:

Adding new discussions
=======================
Anyone - feel free to add new discussins in the "To Discuss" column.

You can set a due date - this will be the discussion's timebox. Once the timebox is over, we should close the discussion.

You - the OP - will be the PO for this discussion. :-)

It's up to you to make sure you clarify what you want help with.

###### Some Guidelines:
- A brief subject line helps

- You can enter a more lengthly description in the.. ummm.. description part

- You might want to add a checklist of points you want covered. This way you can tick off items throughout the
discussion when yopu feel they have been answered. This could help everyone keep on focus.

- Use colors, experiment with the options, have fun!

Facilitating a discussion
=======================
Someone should take up faciltating the discussion before it's started.
The facilitator is the ScrumMaster for this discussion - so help it shine!

Facilitation is volentary - Any member of the Scrum of Scrum organization can volenteer to do it.

To volenteer to facilitate a discussion - just assign it to yourself. That simple.

Joining a discussion
=======================
Anyone can join a discussion and give their input.
Once you join - you'r part of the team - welcome!
It's up to you to work together with the other team-members on the discussion to get the OP a good result.

Facilitators - do what you know to keep the discussion on track.
May the Schwartz be with you!

Ending a discussion
=======================
In Scrum The SM is responsible for holding up timeboxes. So here too - the facilitator of a discussion should
bring it to an end when the due date is coming up.

Discussion Review
=======================
Once the discussion is over - time to review it.

######Facilitators
Um.... Facilitate a review with the PO/OP and the team.

You know how. And if you don't - this is a good place to learn and practice.

######PO
Do you accept or reject the discussion? Have you gotten an answer to your question? How valuable was it for
you? feedback please!

######Team
This is YOUR chance to feel good - you've helped someone and done the best you can doing it!

Take the feedback as a gift, even if it's not always positive. It'll help you get it better next time.

Retrospective
==============
How did we as a team work well? How did we communicate? What was hard and irritating?What would we do better
next time?

Facilitators - Facilitate this! Help the Team and OP's get better as both Scrummers and People. Inspect and
adapt for next time. Make the world a better place!

Done is Done, baby
===================
Facilitators - move the discussion to Done once it's Done. Make sure it's either Done-Done,
Done-Done-Done or Well-Done. Doesn't really matter as long as it's Done.

Cafeteria Talk
==============
Everyone - feel free to continue discussing even after the discussion is done. Off-topic issues are better
served in the Cafeteria Board - Feel free to hop in. The coffee's on us :)

Facilitators - you imght want to move a discussion there once it's done. It's your call.

Oh my, it's the Scrum Police...
===============================
Ok, I guess that's me... yikes.

I'll be responsible for upholding the basic rules mentioned above.
Including (I'm thinking this up as I write):
+ If I see someone starts discussing without a facilitator - I'll pull the discussion back to "TODO".
+ If I see this persists - I'll delete the discussion (Ok I can't really delete it but I might archive it, or put
it up in the "Hall of Shame" board? hm....)
+ In general anyone who misbehaves will have the Spanish Inquisitin on their heels. Hah, I wish...
I'll try to do all this without making a total ass of myself. Feedback welcome.

##So welcome aboard!

Some facilitation?

Hi all.

I was thinking maybe this group could use some facilitation for the discussions.
We do it with teams to get them to work better together, so why not here?

Your thoughts?

Re: User Story Straw Poll

Happy Chanuka indeed.

I still havn't succeeded in conveying to my daughter that Chanuka //does not mean// lighting all the
candles every day... I guess she'll just have to be right and me wrong for several years more...

:)

Another User Story terminology thread - Epics/Themes

No, it's not what you're thinking... at least it's not about an article or anything like that.

Here it is...

In the earlier works on User Stories (Cohn, at least -- maybe there's more), the concept of an "Epic" was something like a "big story" or "a story too big to fit into a sprint".  A "Theme" was something like "a collection of related stories."

In more recent years, I haven't seen much use of the term Theme, but I have seen quite a bit of use of the term Epic, to mean *either* a big story, *or* a collection of Stories(thus taking on the meaning of a Theme).

I've noticed this in the last few years.  I first noticed it in one of my clients 3 years ago(especially in use at the D/Director/VP level), then I noticed it in Pivotal Tracker and Greenhopper in the last year.

Has anyone else seen this use(misuse?) of the terminology?  Do we (as a community, and as practitioners) care that the term has been co-opted?  Is the impact so small as to not worry about it?

Re: Re: User Story Straw Poll

Hmmmm. I think this thread is being taken a little more seriously than I originally intended. I posted on Friday afternoon expecting 5-6 responses and a a couple of jokes at my expense.  Instead its taken on a life of its own. I went offline shortly after posting and so haven't responded. I was naively hoping that I would find something word in common usage. I was wrong.

The non-binding poll was a reference to the degrees we've contorted ourselves in other contexts trying to satisfy all stakeholders. Ron and I aren't in dispute - over the years I've had Ron hit me pretty hard, on this occasion Ron has asked a good question about one sentence in ~6 pages. (There were other suggestions but we've already made changes for them). I think that means for the first time ever Ron and I are in agreement. I marked the day in calendar as a holiday for future years.

Thanks to Charles and Ron for clarifying when I went off to play father for the weekend. Thanks to everyone else for helping me see that I was asking for the impossible :-)

Cheers
Mark
