Re: OpenOffice.org 2.0 Release Candidate

Hi Louis,

a couple of things:

- When I try to download the RC1, no matter which download site I
choose, I get the alert: 550 Failed to change directory
- The Link "OpenOffice.org 2.0 Release Candidate" has an error. The URL
is "http://download.openoffice.org/2..0.0rc/index.html". There is one
"." too much in the link.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 Release Candidate

All,

OpenOffice.org 2.0 has gone from being a Beta to a Release Candidate
(RC). Congratulations to all who made this possible! As an RC,
OpenOffice.org 2.0 RC still--even more so--needs to be downloaded and
tested by the community. So we urge you to go to <http://
download.openoffice.org/2.0.0rc/index.html> and start the fun. The
sooner we clean up the bugs, the sooner we can come out with
OpenOffice.org 2.0.

And what is OpenOffice.org 2.0? The world's best and easiest to use
free productivity suite. Read the product page and features pages
for more information.

* OpenOffice.org 2.0 RC <http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.0rc/
index.html>
* Product <http://www.openoffice.org/product2/index.html>
* Features <http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/2.0/index.html>

*** NOTE: For right now, Windows user will have to remove older Beta
and developer builds prior to the installation of the RC because of
an incorrect interpretation of their version information by the
Windows Installer. As a matter of course the stable version
OpenOffice.org 1.1.x (most recent: 1.1.5) can be used concurrently.

Cheers to all,

Team OpenOffice.org

Designing a Better Font Selection Widget for use in Open Source Software

Hi, everyone,

This message is an open letter to:

 - Gnome Desktop developers
 - KDE Desktop developers
 - OpenOffice.org developers
 - Gimp developers
 - Inkscape developers

... regarding a proposal for an improved font selection drop-down
widget that would be ideal for use in professional-quality Open Source
word processing, desktop publishing, and graphic design programs
such as OpenOffice.org, Gimp, Inkscape, and similar
programs.

The proposal suggests a design that is particularly
applicable where users require a streamlined and intuitive interface
for selecting multiple fonts from large font collections present on
the user's machine. The proposal also attempts to fully address
aspects of internationalization related to font selection
that I believe have been largely overlooked until now. Finally,
the proposal suggests using a common XML configuration file which
for storing font collection information.

To see the full proposal, please see:

The rest of this email provides a synopsis of the proposal.

Access to language packs not available.

Please excuse the cross-posting but I think the problem of no access to
built language packs is a problem. SOme of us work in multiple languages
and having the language packs saves space and time.

So I think that there should be a statement, in English, that we should
get language packs from the NLC of choice. However, there is a problem,
the 2.0 language packs are not offered by most NLC projects. They are
not put on the mirrors nor downloads.openoffice.org. So we are now at
an impass. If those in control will not offer the language packs via the
openoffice.org projects, such as oootranslation, then we are obliged to
get the packs elsewhere. Where? Well how about hammering Pavel's
development server. Not freindly but it will work until ...

Please reconsider. Employment of language packs is an important part of
the 2.0 Beta process and if these are not tested we will not have a
viable product and we are forcing users to do multiple installations of
complete 2.0/1.9 suites in other languages than that first downloaded.

Think about what you are doing.

Chineese character crashing and overlaping one with the other.

Email from one of our chineese workers in our company:
I use Open Office version. 1.9.113 in my company.
Still have some problems with the formatting and
coding when I put in simplied Chinese characters, e.g.
the characters can not be shown properly, some of them
appear like crashing with other characters. Pls report
to the corresponding party.
The process is usually once closed/saved/opened, the characteres shown as
overlaping. This is with the Zoom applied at 100% and with Asian character
support enable. Also kerning enabled for Asian characters.
Some random text will appear red for no aparent reason.

License Simplification

All,

On 2 September 2005 Sun Microsystems announced that it was retiring
the Sun Industry Standards Source License (SISSL), an Open Source
Initiative (OSI)-approved software license. In recent weeks, the
OSI, which authorises open-source licenses, has been discussing
limiting license proliferation, so as to make the process of choosing
a license easier for developers and companies. Sun's move is in
support of that objective.

How does this move affect OpenOffice.org? As most know,
OpenOffice.org code was launched under the dual banner of the SISSL
and LGPL; licensees could choose which one they wanted to use, and
nearly all have chosen the LGPL. Effective with the announcement
that Sun is retiring the SISSL, however, OpenOffice.org will in the
future only be licensed under the LGPL.

For users, the simplification means: no change. OpenOffice.org
remains free to use, distribute, even sell. One can freely use it in
commercial as well as government environments; nothing has changed.

For vendors, distributors, add-on and plug-in writers of
OpenOffice.org: The LGPL allows for commercial distribution without
affecting derived products in the same way as the GPL.

For developers and other contributors: As the code will be licensed
only under the LGPL, modifications to the source must be published.
(The SISSL did not require all changes to the source to be
published.) As most OpenOffice.org contributors are already openly
contributing to the community, we anticipate no problems. And for

Mille regrets à tous

Bonsoir,

A trop vouloir bien faire...

Cordialement,

B. Moutouh

XFORMS in Openoffoce.org 2?

[xpost with follow-up set to gmane.comp.openoffice.questions]

By sheer coincidence I realized recently that OOo supports XFORMS. Yet
another reason to switch from a competitive package and it's proprietary
(infopath in this case) data formats!

I went ahead and searched for Information about this feature but could
not find a lot. Most search results are from last year and related to
the announcement of xforms support in OOo.

I.e. on
http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/lars?entry=openoffice_org_snapshot_build_1
Lars Oppermann's Weblog

He promises more info on that topic but I cannot find anything.

Where is the best place to learn about XFORMS in Openoffice.org?

thank you

Santiago Bosio
