Re: help about MKV

There are plenty of HDD and network based systems that can play Matroska files. Even some BluRay players can do that now.

hi there
i need to watch this type of files on LCD (TV) but i couldn't find any home DVD player to read this kind of files.

I use a WD TV Media Player for this purpose:

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/index.asp?cat=30

(I have the Gen1 version of the WD TV model.)

I wrote a tool, VOB2MKV, specifically for the purpose of converting DVD rips to MKV, so that I could play them on my TV using a hard drive instead of relying on optical media.  (It only runs on Windows.  If you have another OS then you could try FFmpeg or mencoder.)

http://vob2mkv.codeplex.com/

I just released vob2mkv-1.0.4 a few days ago.  See the accompanying README.TXT file for details about how to use it.

Control language when compiling mkvtoolnix (Linux)

Hi,

I am compiling mkvtoolnix 3.3.0 under Slackware linux. Is there a
method to control the languages that are used? A default install on my
system generates man pages in several languages, the html guide in
Chinese and English and allows me to use mkvmerge gui in several
languages as well. A great feature but in the installation script I am
writing I would like to allow the user to be able to select the
language at compile time.

Thanks for your trouble,

Andrew

Partially. If the environment variable LINGUAS is set when configure is
run then the it selects the translations for the programs. The
translations for the man pages and the guide are not affected by that
variable though because the corresponding configure checks haven't been
coded to take it into account.

What you can do after configure is overwriting the corresponding
Makefile variables. The variables in question are: TRANSLATIONS
TRANSLATIONS_POS for the translation of the tools, MANPAGES_TRANSLATIONS
MANPAGES_TRANSLATIONS_POS, GUIDE_TRANSLATIONS.

However, the proper way would be to change the configure checks to
respect LINGUAS.

Mosu

sync issue with mkvmerge-3.3.0

I have a couple of AVI files that a simple mkvmerge has horrible AV
sync issues with, while 3.2.0 works fine. I am using Debian testing,
nearly at head, with mkvtoolnix coming from bunkus.org

The usage is just: mkvmerge output.mkv input.avi

On a 73 second sequence, the video plays fast and finishes in about 60
seconds while the audio finishes in the normal 73 seconds. Another 11
minute movie has the same issue. Files are both MPEG-1/2 and AC3
tracks.

The resulting MKVs are different sizes, the 3.3.0 versions being
longer in both cases.

-rw-r--r-- 1 nexus nexus 418456697 2010-04-04 17:27 4-3.3.0.mkv

mplayer -identify output for the two smaller files shows minor differences:

mkvmerge 3.3.0 contains re-written code for timestamping MPEG-1/2 video
tracks. This code has known issues with some picture types resulting in
A/V desync. It will be fixed, but I don't have an ETA. Stick with v3.2.0
for the time being.

Haali causes stuttering on blu-ray rips in WMP on Windows 7 x64.

Tried multiple Windows 7 x64 installs, using Haali, my blu-ray rips stutter in WMP, but using gabest splitter, they play fine.

Procedure I use to rip the movies:
1. Rip blu-ray disc with anydvd hd
2. eac3to.exe blu-ray image into .mkv + .flac
3. combine .mkv + .flac with mkvmergegui.

Stutter is so severe that movies are unwatchable. Issue was consistent on every blu-ray disc I've ripped, in total about 67 movies.  Whether BR video was VC-1, h264, or mpeg2 made no difference.
