Re: Problems with Theora in VLC

I sent this a few days ago, but it hasn't appeared on the list, so I'm
sending it again. Sorry if this means it appears twice in the future.

Re: file problem

:O :O :O ..... Oh my God, a MKV file containing Microsoft's VC1 video
codec and uncompressed 6 channel PCM audio :O :O .... what a nonsense
!!! No wonder that VLC does have problems playing this file, its
integrated VC1 deocder is in best case beta. You should use a DirectShow
based player for this file, like Windows Mediaplayer (WMP) or
Mediaplayer Classic.

RE: Reencode

Have you tried VLC? It should play nearly anything. Also, can you give us a diagnostics dump?

I've downloaded a MKV file and the =ecessary codec to open it.

I know it works if I use the Windows =edia Player, but Nero 8 is the best.
While my MKV files run slowly on WMP or =CL player, on Nero 8 there's no problem and the quality is the same.
I was just wondering if there is any =oftware that I can use to re-encode the MKV file (I'm almost sure if i do that it =ill work)
I tryied VirtualDubMod but it just =onverts AVI to MKV and it doesn't play MKV file (and I have the codec).

So, if you know something that I can =se to play it on my Nero 8, i'd be grateful.

RE: file problem

This actually sounds like a problem with VLC's VC1 codec. It's also possible that this is caused by a lack of processing power, A high bitrate video, using a complex compression codec and a high resolution spell disaster if you don't have a beastly enough machine.

RE: Problems with Theora in VLC

Sounds like an error with VLC not recognizing Theora. This may be an issue with the player, not the codec. You
may want to send a message to their mailing list/forums/support service.

Hello,

I'm having a bit a trouble getting a .mkv file working in VLC (0.8.6d )
when it contains a Theora stream. Any audio in the file plays fine, but
no video, and the messages says:

mkv error: unknown codec id='V_THEORA'
main error: no suitable decoder for module for fourcc 'undf'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I can play the video when it's in it's original ogg container.

Any ideas?

RE: Reencode

More details are required. Like what kind of codec is this? A diagnostics dump would actually be quite useful, especially if you could provide more details about what you did, and the exact error messages you're getting.

RE: Problems with dvd conversion

Well, the video quality thing isn't inherent to Matroska, it's probably just a high quality source that's
been well compressed. As far as conversion goes, it may have to do with the video's resolution (Matroska is
popular when compressing high definition media, and I have no clue how DVDSanta reacts to
greater-that-NTSC resolutions). You could look into an ffmpeg-based solution. I know there are FFMPEG
builds for Windows, that FFMPEG reads practically anything, FFMPEG has a DVD exporting preset, it'll
downscale any resolution to any other resolution, is free (as in open source, as in both speech and beer),
and there are several GUIs for Windows which should make FFMPEG easier to learn and use. Can't speak from
experience here since I havn't a Windows box to test solutions with, but I know based on experience with Mac
OS builds, FFMPEG will do the job, but not all the way. It'll produce a VIDEO_TS folder, which any DVD
burning program should be able to burn as a DVD video. I know Nero has a Video_TS setting, and I'm 99% sure
Roxio's offerings have that too.

RE: mkv files via cyberlink power dvd

The problem is you're using the wrong tool for the wrong job. PowerDVD's speciality is MPEG-2 demuxing and decoding, it was never meant for anything else. Try a more versitile media player like VLC (http://www.videolan.org). VLC is open source (so it's free) and has built-in support for Matroska (from chapters to multiple tracks, everything except extensive metadata and menus, but I've yet to see an MKV with menus or any documentation on how to produce one, so no worry there) as well as open source implementations of all major codecs (though I'd avoid VC1 in VLC, that's still experimental, but no one distributes VC1 in MKVs because there's so little support, so again, no worry there).
