Try using VLC. I've never had a problem with it playing back unDRM'd material.

No video in WMP 11

Christian
matroska project admin

Dear Christian,

Saw a post on moviecodec.com and am experiencing the same problem. I am
running WMP11 within MCE 2005 and can not get the video to play from my mkv
file. The audio plays fine. The funny thing is when using VLC, the
opposite happens, no audio, but yes to video.

I've run the diag prog and am attaching the log:

Thanks in advance.

Re: No video in WMP 11

Google for 'ffdshow' and install the latest version of it, then it
should work fine even in WMP 11. The CCCP pack from
http://packs.matroska.org should come with a very recent version of
ffdshow also.
Funny the problem with VLC, this is a very standard audio codec used
(AC3) in this MKV, it should play that fine ? Make sure to use the
latest version of VLC, 0.8.6a , and check if you can hear audio in other
movie types, like MPEG or AVI. Maybe there is a general audio interface
problem on the DirectShow level ?

Display a subtitles track by default?

I am ripping a DVD and it has two subtitle tracks. One is translations
of the occasional foreign speech that is supposed to be on by default,
and the other of full subtitles for the hearing impaired.

I tried the default flag, that didn't do anything. I think the forced
flag might be what I'm looking for, but I think that forces it always
on? As in, it can't be disabled or changed? I can't find any way to
turn that on anyway...

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

playing decoded contents

Hi All,

I am a MKV developer working with VC6/Windows-XP.
I am decoding a .MMV file and dumping the audio and video data to
binary files.
I want to check the sanity of dumped data. Dumped Audio is "MP3"
format and I am able to play this file using Windows Media player.
Dumped Video is "V_MS/VFW/FOURCC" format. I have given the dumped
file a ".M4V" extension. But I am not able to play this file using
Windows-Media or VLC player.
    Can some one help me?

Regards,
Kunal

Streaming MKV files via ASX scripts?

I was experimenting with streaming MKV files via ASX scripts to Media Player 10 and VLC 0.8.6b and noticed
the following:

1) A simple <entry> tag worked just fine and the file(s) would playback normally (including seeking and
jumping to chapters once playing).

2) Using the <starttime value="1:00.0" /> tag would start one minute into the file in Media Player but that
first minute would be "lost" and could not be jumped backwards into and the overall file length would be
reported as one minute shorter. On one computer I tried it on Media Player behaved strangely and would not
play the video at first and generated a weird error about being low on memory (with a gig of free RAM) but
would play after pressing the play button again, on another machine it was fine (but still "missing" the
video from before starttime). In VLC the tag was ignored and the file would play from the begining.

3) Using the <duration value="1:00.0" /> tag worked as expected and only played for one minute.

4) Both Media Player and VLC seemed to "ignore" the <startmarker number="2" name="Chapter 2" /> tag when I
tried to apply it to Matroska chapters.

My questions now are:

1) Why does Media Player report the file length as being one minute shorter and "drop" that first minute when
using the <starttime .../> tag with a MKV file?

2) Can some of the more advanced features like <startmarker .../> be made to work by making some changes in
the splitter? If so, is this something Haali or Gabest has time to implement?

3) Is VLC's behaviour on Windows dependent on filters or is it's ASX support coded internally? (note: I am
not subscribed to any VLC mailing lists)

4) Is there some other mechanism to start a Matroska file playing at a particular chapter "automatically"
instead of having to start at the begining of a file and manually select where to jump to?

Thank-you,
David

Changing the display dimensions of a video file

Hello,

I have a MKV file with wrong encoded dimensions, and I want to correct thoses
values (under Linux, with command line tools if possible...)

The original file (foo.mkv) has one video track, with pixel dimensions
320x240 and display dimensions 100x100. I want to reset the display aspect
ratio to the 'physical' one, so I tried the command:

mkvmerge --display-dimensions 1:320x240 -o bar.mkv foo.mkv

which seems to give the right result (file bar.mkv has both 320x240 for pixel
and display).

Is it the best way to do it ? any side effects ?

Thanks.

This is the correct way to do it, yes.
