Need help with an mkv file

Hi there,

Basically, I downloaded a .mkv file, and it doesn't work. At all. In fact, on the whole it crashes most of my players. Heres the specs from matroskadiag.exe.

Well, your file looks OK. Sounds like a problem with your demuxer. Have you tried using a program that doesn't rely on the Microsoft demuxing system, like VLC?

Try upgrading/reinstalling your Matroska demuxer, see if that helps.

Looks like the problem is somewhere in the VobSub renderer or the Vorbis decoder. I don't use Windows, so I'm not entirely sure whether these are normal errors, but the big red letters "AddFilter Failed" seem to be bad.

Cannot Extract Tracks (Garbled Output)

Hi everyone. I'm new to Matroska, but it looks like a very interesting
project!

I have a few clips here that I cannot seem to extract using
mkvextract. Doing a `mkvmerge -i` on the file shows the following
info:

Track ID 1: video (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC)
Track ID 2: audio (A_AC3)

However, when I try to extract it, the output is all garbled blocks of
colors and mplayer gives these errors:

AC EOB marker is absent pos=66
AC EOB marker is absent pos=66
AC EOB marker is absent pos=92
[etc]

I tried a few variations, but the command I've tried for both clips so
far is this. It goes fine without any errors, but the output of both
the avi and ac3 is all garbled.

mkvextract tracks file.mkv 1:test.avi 2:test.ac3

Sorry if this is a common question, but I did search the FAQ and lists
but didn't come up with anything.

FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE
libmatroska-0.8.0

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like MPlayer can't recognize the file, and deciding it's a raw
DV stream (happens quite commonly with damaged AVI/MPEG headers). I
have to ask, though: what version are you using? Some MPlayer
versions have had some bad demuxers. You might want to use the latest
SVN for the best results. Anyway, sounds like a busted AVI header.
Have you tried forcing the use of a decoder, such as
-vc ffmpegh264
to force the use of the FFMPEG H.264 decoder, instead of MPlayer
deciding on the raw DV decoder. Just use -ac help OR -vc help to
determine what decoders are available.

Can you send us the output of mkvinfo? This should help us determine
if it's a damaged file, or a problem with your software. Also, have
you tried remuxing the file? IE: mkvmerge (input).mkv -o
(output).mkv? Perhaps that might help fix the file, if there's
something wrong with it.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

MPlayer version is 0.99.7_14. I've also tried playing the extracted .avi
in VLC and Xine, neither will play it. VLC shows the seek bar going from
left to right for about 2 seconds, then stops, but no video shows (it
doesn't show an audio/video track either). Xine says it can't find a
demuxer plugin. With the "More" button, it says:

xine: found demuxer plugin: Elementary MPEG stream demux plugin

MPlayer and Xine both play the original Matroska files fine, however
VLC won't show video output on the original .mkv. It shows the seek bar
moving throughout the entire clip duration, and shows "avc1" as the
codec, plays the audio, but no video output.

I tried the mplayer suggestion of the forcing video codec, but it
doesn't play anything this time. Here is what it says:

Playing file.avi.
AVI: Missing video stream!? Contact the author, it may be a bug :(
RAWDV file format detected.
VIDEO: [DVSD] 720x480 24bpp 29.970 fps 0.0 kbps ( 0.0 kbyte/s)

Sure, the output of mkvinfo is attached. I tried remuxing but it's the
same result. I think the original Matroska files are fine, just
something in the process of extracting the tracks.

Thanks again!

mkvextract writes AVC to raw AVC elementary streams, not to AVIs (it
cannot and will never be able to do that). You should use mp4box which
can import AVC ES into MP4 files. Those can be played by mplayer.

MPlayer should be able to play raw H.264 streams. It can output them.
The catch is that since a raw stream doesn't have a header, MPlayer
doesn't know what it is playing, so the user must invoke the -vc
option to tell MPlayer what to use.

hmm. Seems MPlayer is expecting a container. See below for notes.

The data is missing. It seems the mailing list system must have
stripped out the attachment. But, in this case, I think Moritz Bunkus
is on the right track, about the output being a straight H.264
stream. You might have to remux the output file as an MKV file in
order to use it.

Demuxing from Matroska, Remuxing to Other Format

Hello.

I have several MKV files that I wish to transcode. However, I have an
odd situation where the transcoder doesn't seem to like the MKV files
as they are in source. If I remux them, either to another Matroska
file, AVI file, etc., the transcoder has no problems. This probably
has something to do with the way I archived the files or something
like that.

My goal is to remux the files so that I can transcode them. Part of
the problem is, though, whenever I remux the file (even using
MKVMerge), I get busted keyframes and loss of audio sync. If I use
MEncoder to remux the video to an AVI file (mencoder -ovc copy -oac
copy), I get the same results. If I demux the video using MKVExtract,
and remux the file with MEncoder, I don't get broken keyframes, but I
do get out of sync audio.

Padding the audio doesn't seem to be the solution here, since the
audio gets *progressively* out of sync, that is the further into the
video you go, the more out of sync it gets.

I'm running a Mac OS X (10.4.6) system, and have no fear when it
comes to monkeying around with the UNIX sub-system. Any recommendations?

I'm using the latest from the FreeBSD ports system. Reading the changes
on the port, it's said to be using 1.0pre7, which sounds fairly close
to the "1.0pre7try2" that's on the MPlayer site. I understand SVN is
current and the most up to date, but I am using the newest version that
has been ported to my OS.

I'll just paste the text onto the end of this message. My end goal is
to load the audio+video into Avidemux2 and convert it further....but
Avidemux doesn't load the extracted video either. I originally asked on
the Avidemux forum, and they said I needed Matroska to demux the file,
and then I could load it into Avidemux. If no players can play the
extracted tracks though, then I can't expect Avidemux to be able to
load them either.

Again, sorry if this is a "noobish" type question/problem, but I'm just
thinking there is something wrong with the extracting, or how I'm doing
it.

Thanks again.
