Linux newbie questions

Hi all

So far, I'm really impressed with gnump3d, but I have a few questions:

1. I put gnump3d into my /etc/rc.local file, but every time I boot, all the
settings in gnump3d.conf seem to be reset. Specifically, I have to change the
port and music folder every time.

2. When I startup, it tells me that about 3 or 4 files/folders do not have
enough permissions. As I was in a hurry to get it working I just chmod 777'd
them, but there must be a better solution.

3. Can I use a url for my gnump3d homepage, which does *not* include the port
number:8888? My work's facist firewall blocks all URLs with port numbers.

4. Can problems 1 and 2 be fixed by using a user other than gnump3d? I'm not
sure what the significance of this user is. Reading
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/189, Steve Kemp recommends that I
set the permissions to my music folder to a "music" group. I tried that in
Krusader, but failed. How do I do it recursively from the command line?

cheers

Iain

PS. It's good this mailing list is mirrored at gmane.org. The interface is
great. Maybe a link from the gnump3d homepage would be good?

What, specifically, did you put in the rc.local file?

Please give the specific error. What were the permissions on the files and
folders in question. The files and directories just need to be readable by
gnump3d, AFAIK.

Are you asking us to help you break the rules established by your employer?
The default http port is 80, specifing a URL without a port reference will
cause the browser to try to connect to port 80. Typically, that's the port
that Apache listens to.

Re: Linux newbie questions

Thanks for the help guys. I am out of town for a few days. I will try these
tips and give more detail on my return.

IP address changing

I don't like how anybody can see the IP address where my mp3s are coming from. Tor offers web anonymity...can
it be used with gnump3d? Perhaps use host_rewrite in gnump3d's setup file?

If you are providing content over a TCP/IP connection, then the computer
at the other end of the connection has to know your IP address. There's
no other way for the data to get from one computer to the other.

"Anonymity" means not having to use your real name; the web never promised
that you would be untraceable.

recently added tracks

I'm using the Avalon theme now and noticed there's a recent.html page with a $TEXT option. This is a neat idea
since I add at least 2 new mp3s to my
server weekly. The $TEXT variable doesn't produce any tracks, though. Is there a quick way to construct an
html page with the most recent mp3s?

hide directories or password protect certain directories

I want to hide or password protect certain directories so that only certain users can access certain
directories on my server but I want anyone to be
able to access other directories. Is this possible?

Quicktime mov streaming

I'm running gnump3d on a Linux box. I have some Quicktime .mov files that I put on my server that are
downloadable but don't stream. Do I just download the Quicktime codecs from mplayer and put them in a file
and then edit mime.types to stream .mov files with mplayer?

  Yeah that should work.

The server basically sends it out with the mime type and it is up
to the client to decide whether to wait for the download, or start
 playing immediately.

CPU speed/RAM amount to stream video

My gnump3d server is a 200 MHz Pentium with 128 MB RAM on a Linux box. It works fine with streaming mp3s, though
a couple plugins are slow (like archive size). Is the pc fast enough to stream .mov Quicktime video files?
