IFO + VOB less than 32k

Hi there!

We are developing an interface for our dvd authoring software using
dvdauthor. We are able to create the ISO file and we would like to
send it to a replication company. They pointed out that there are some
errors in our ISO file, and one of them are the following:

- Video Manager IFO and BUP files in same ECC block

Talking with mkisofs developers, it seems that the second error is
related with the files generated by dvdauthor, and they recommended me
to ask about this with you.

As you can note, the following information on this email is the same
as in this thread (sorry by the link, sf seems to have some problem by
now):
http://sourceforge.net/p/cdrtools/mailman/cdrtools-developers/?viewmonth=201507&style=threaded

Well, the error description is the following:

"The DVD-Video specifications require that the Video Manager Information
file (VIDEO_TS.IFO) and its backup (VIDEO_TS.BUP) NOT be recorded in
the same ECC block.

Background
For redundancy purposes, the DVD-Video specifications require a backup
file for the Video Manager Information file. If this file should
become corrupt, a DVD-Player can locate the backup file and use it
instead. If the two files overlap within the same ECC Block, it is
possible that if the ECC fails, it will cause both files to be
unreadable.

Possible Cause
This problem is caused by the authoring system that created the image.
It is the responsibility of the authoring system to ensure that these
files do not overlap within the same ECC Block.

Possible Solution
This problem can only be corrected by an authoring system."

So, I search about this. IFO and BUP can not be on the same ECC
sector, that is 32k large (16 x 2048). The behaviour is described
here:

http://club.myce.com/f62/video_ts-ifo-video_ts-bup-same-ecc-block-98278/#post621399

I read the mkisofs man and it says that mkisofs with -dvd-video will
fill needed gaps. But in the case of an "empty" menu, or a VOB that is
so little that the sum of IFO + VOB is less than 32K, mkisofs will not
take action. In fact, this is an issue with some version of Nero too:

http://download.videohelp.com/r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/Burning%20With%20PgcEdit.htm

At the same time, it seems that this kind of issue was already discussed:

http://osdir.com/ml/audio.cd-record/2002-12/msg00015.html

Well, mkisofs developers say that this is a kind of issue that should
be fixed by the dvd authoring software.

Lawrence D'Oliveiro asked:
> In what way is it related to the files, exactly? dvdauthor only
> generates the contents of the files, and according to what is known of
> the spec, the two files are supposed to be identical, so dvdauthor
> makes them identical. So what else is dvdauthor supposed to be doing?

So, yes. The two files should be identical, but as explained on the
links I sent, the sum of IFO + VOB should be larger than 32k.

mkisofs does not fill the gaps in this case

Lawrence D'Oliveiro asked:
> Why not?

I don't know, mkisofs developers say that it is the authoring tool
that should fill the gaps.

Lawrence D'Oliveiro asked:
> How?

I don't know!, I don't know! :)

Lawrence D'Oliveiro asked:
> Have you tried genisoimage as an alternative to mkisofs?

It seems that genisoimage is not updated since 2010, 5 years ago.
mkisofs is still maintained, so I believe genisoimage will give me
more problems with the replication company.

Thanks for your attention.

Re: [Dvdauthor-developer] Errors in UDF format while sending ISO to DVD replication

[Probably best to continue this discussion on dvdauthor-users rather
than dvdauthor-developer.]

In what way is it related to the files, exactly? dvdauthor only
generates the contents of the files, and according to what is known of
the spec, the two files are supposed to be identical, so dvdauthor
makes them identical. So what else is dvdauthor supposed to be doing?

How?

Have you tried genisoimage as an alternative to mkisofs?

Forced Infinite Pause On Last Cell?

I have been doing some work for a client which involves generating DVDs
using DVDAuthor. In the process, I discovered that looping a menu with
audio didn’t seem to work. I traced this down to a sequence in
dvdauthor.c which would force the pause time on the last cell to
infinite if the PGC did not have any <post> instructions. I made the
following patch to disable this:
<https://github.com/ldo/dvdauthor/commit/9a3017055207b957dfedbe138dd5ad4b40b5f131>

Now, it could be that this patch has implications elsewhere. I have
already found I now need to explicitly set the pause on a menu <vob> to
infinite if I want the menu to stay visible without looping. Otherwise
it seems the player stops after showing the menu.

Thoughts, anyone? I need to make a fix, but of course it should be
backward-compatible if at all possible.

what's the best encoder for dvdauthor?

"FFmpeg is probably the easiest tool nowadays for generating an MPEG file in the right format:
just specify “-target pal-dvd” or “-target ntsc-dvd”, and it will preset all the appropriate options.
[...]
Mjpeg Tools has the best multiplexer around. Others will often throw warnings with dvdauthor.
It also has an mpeg2 video encoder."
(<http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/>)
And in a recent msg (18 Mar 2015) Lawrence D'Oliveiro wrote:
"Are you using FFmpeg?s ?-target pal-dvd? or ?-target ntsc-dvd? options?
I usually find this is enough to engage all the right encoding settings."

Well, ffmpeg/avconv is the fastest tools. But after some repetita dvdauthor WARNings ("WARN: unknown mpeg2 aspect ratio 1"), I've tried some little experiments.
I've some mixed material to put on a DVD structure with dvdauthor.
Some of these are clip from still images, that I've obtained fast and easy with:

convert xc:green -resize 720x576! greenframe.png
convert xc:black -resize 720x576! blackframe.png

avconv -loop 1 -f image2 -i blackframe.png -r 25 -t 30 -f dvd -target pal-dvd blackvideo.mpeg

When I take a look on these video, with mplayer -identify, I obtain
[...]
Movie-Aspect is 1.25:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=1.2500
[...]

and then, in dvdauthor  they generate that WARN.
On the contrary, when you use png2yuv + mpeg2enc + mplex (RFM <http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/doc/c3.html#AEN24>) to create the mpeg file

png2yuv -n 750 -I p -f 25 -j greenframe.png | mpeg2enc -f 8 -o greenvideo.m2v
mplex -f 8 -o greenvideo.mpeg greenvideo.m2v silence_30s.m2a

mplayer -identify say:
[...]
Movie-Aspect is 1.33:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=1.3333
[...]
and dvdauthor  don't generate any WARN.

May I conclude that is better to prepare all mpeg files in the DVD with mjpegtools?
And then forget the simple and fast command to create DVD material:
(avconv -i any.avi -f dvd -format pal-dvd any.mpeg)?

Best regards,
enrico

I am converting MP4 video to MPG using FFMPEG, then using DVDAuthor immediately afterwards but this message is appearing a few times while it’s processing. I don’t notice any artefacts or other issues when the video is played. It is something I should be concerned about or not?

Cannot parse video caption

I am trying to specify video options using the latest GIT version but it keeps failing, as follows:

dvdauthor -t --video=pal+16:9+720x576 -o dvdtest 2474.mpg

DVDAuthor::dvdauthor, version 0.7.1+.

Build options: gnugetopt iconv freetype fontconfig

Send bug reports to <dvdauthor-users <at> lists.sourceforge.net>

INFO: no default video format, must explicitly specify NTSC or PAL

ERR:  Cannot parse video caption '720x576'

I cannot work out what I am doing wrong or how to do it differently. Can anyone help please?

Some problems (or not?) with commands (and double-layer DVD header)

 I'm exploring newely-created DVD with "DVDReMake PRO" utility
(Windows only, unfortunately it is not possible to find recommended
"Ogle" anymore) and find two problems, which looks like some dvdauthor
errors.

(1)

 I have LAST title of titleset with such "post" commands:

if (g0 == 0)
  jump next title;
else {
  if (g0 == 1)
    call vmgm menu 1;
  else
    call menu entry ptt;
}

  And looks like dvdauthor compiles it wrong as DVDReMake shows this
like that:

1 if (g0 != 0) goto line 3
2 Call VMG title menu (!!!!!)
3 ...

 And it plays this like that! Is it problem of dvdauthor or DVDRemake?
I don't want to burn disk to check this on hardware player :)

(2)

 Another LAST title in titleset has "jump next cell" conditional
post-command, and DVDRemake complains, that it is not allowed here,
but dvdauthor says nothing. Again, I'm not sure, that DVDRemake is
right...

 Also, DVDRemake says, that DVD image is 3000 Mb larger than specified
(it is double-layer image, yes). Looks like some flag in header set wrong.

Problems with Panasonic DVD-Player

A DVD which I made with DVDStyler/DVDAuthor does not run on a Panasonic
DVD/Blueray Player.
The startmenu is displayed, you can push any button nothing happens,
there's no action, no navigation.
On other hardware or software the DVD is played without any problems.
Video format is: PAL 720x576 16:9
  The menus are static, I used the DVDStyler default settings:
     Frame count of menu: 12
     Draw buttons on background: on
Has someone any experience what do ?

How to split one MPEG2-PS file into several titles for dvdauthor?

Hello Dvdauthor-users,

  I have one big PAL-DVD MPEG2 file (720x567, DAT=16:9, one stream of MP2
 audio). It was prepared with

ffmpeg -y -i in.mp4 --format pal-dvd -f dvd -q:v 1 -pass 1/2 title.mpg

 This file works with dvdauthor, as one title.

 But I want to split it to several titles (in one title set), because
chapters is very limited: for example, it is not possible to add conditional
jump to end of chapter.

 How could I do such split? I have 11 split points, accurate up to second,
and I understand, that proper split could be done only at I frame points, so
resulting splitting point could be slightly shifted. It is Ok.

 I've tried this (I'm showing only 2 splitting points here, not 11):

ffmpeg -y -i title.mpg \
 -f dvd -codec:v copy -codec:a copy -to 00:00:20 -sn title_01.mpg \
 -f dvd -codec:v copy -codec:a copy -ss 00:00:20 -to 00:04:40 -sn
   title_02.mpg \
 -f dvd -codec:v copy -codec:a copy -ss 00:57:10 -sn "title_12.mpg"

 But afdter this, dvdauthor refuse to use this files, even after remux (but
not recode, of course!) with DVDStyler. Error occurs on second file and
message is:

STAT: Processing dvd-cache/entry042.vob...
STAT: VOBU 50 at 11MB, 10 PGCs
...
STAT: VOBU 466 at 114MB, 10 PGCs
ERR: Cannot infer pts for VOBU if there is no audio or video and it is the
ERR: first VOBU.

 But here is a clue: file in question is only 112328704 bytes long! Looks
like, I'm splitting PS wrong!

 What is proper way to split MPEG2-PS stream for using resulting chunks as
titles with dvdauthor, to have all frames & smooth transitions between them?

AVCHD files

Hi,

Could someone give me any hints to deal with AVCHD (*.MTS) files with free software?

I've tried mplayer (MPlayer SVN-r37150-4.8.3) with no result.
ffmpeg (version 2.1.5) seems go better: it'a problem on my hw resource, also, I think (Athlon 64X2 <at> 2.7Ghz, with 4GB RAM).

And these files are on some DVD UDF that are damaged, too.
GNU ddrescue (v.1.17) is a excellent tool for recovering a disk image, then I'd carve it with foremost.
Foremost (version 1.5.7) is also a excellent tool, but needs instructions on what types of file are to be found.
File (v.5.19) enigmatically say that *.MTS files are "data".

With a little research on the net I cannot found the signature (magic number) for these files: it's depends on copyright reason?

I've tried also empirically with hexdump and strings on the head of some valid MTS file, looking for it.
Then on the basis of some MTS file head comparison I've write these lines on my foremost.conf
# euristic AVCHD MTS from head confontation:
    MTS    y    2000000000 \x00 \x00 \xb0 \x11 \x00 \x00 \xc1 \x00 \x00 \x00 \x00 \xe0 \x1f \x00 \x01 \xe1 \x00 \x23 \x5a \xab \x82

Is this a reliable test?

Thanks,
 enrico
