Although there are also a lot of Jean-somethings, probably due to 
St. Jean Baptiste being seemingly the patron saint of Quebec.
Used to be a lot of Joseph and Mary's in large Irish-Catholic 
families too.

1.  I thought that Joseph played kind of a minor part in the story, one that 
might have been much less than stellar had the story turned out differently.

2.  Does 'Jean' translate to 'Joseph'?  Does this mean that John and Joseph are 
the same name?

Jean and John are cognates.  Joseph is the same in French and English.
