update for linux x86-64

Hi,

a few days ago my Thunderbird 3.0.1 on linux x86-64 (Fedora 12) notified
me about updates for my add-ons. The update to enigmail 1.0.1 (from
1.0.0) failed, though. I was told that the new extension is incompatible
because of the architecture. Obviously, it tried to install the 32-bit
version. I downloaded the x86-64 version from
http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download/index.php and installed it manually,
which went flawless.
Is this some wrong setting in my setup or is an automatic update for
x86-64 currently not possible?

Regards,
Jakob

The problem is that the extension manager queries addons.mozilla.org for updates of Enigmail. But the (only) XPI offered there only works for the standard platforms Windows, Mac OS X and Linux x86-32. Any other platforms need to be manually downloaded from http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ -Patrick

Simplest solution : just use yum and rpmfusion (free) repository yum install thunderbird-enigmail available for i386, x86_64, ppc and ppc64. This way, extension will be available for all users / profiles. +

Decrypting attachments

Part of the problem is that there is no standard extension on the
attached messages. Sometimes mine have .asc. Others have no extension.
And I never get a pop-up asking for an application.

Since decrypted messages are always plain text, Enigmail should add a
.txt extension to the decrypted message, which might fix this. But
better yet, in the Enigmail preferences we should be able to specify
which application to use to open decrypted messages.

Thanks,
Jim

Decrypting attachments

No one answered this:

Under Windows7 and TB 3.0.1, if I get an encrypted attachment, I get two
choices: "decrypt and open" and "decrypt and save". The former never
works, I think because windows does not know what to open the file with.
How do I specify this in enigmail? If I can't, this must be a bug in enigmail.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Decrypting attachments

Hi James,

I confirm that there is something weird, however, my test-email did work:
create OpenOffice Text test document
compose new INLINE encrypted Email to self
  - select "enctypt body and each attachment separately" upon sending
decrypt received email (body)
  - "decrypt and open" attachment

=> A dialog appears where I shall choose which app to open it with.
That dialog should be prepopulated with known file types which it is not.
However, on my system, OpenOffice starts a split second later opening my
newly decrypted-to-temp document in read-only mode. When I close OpenOffice
the selection dialog still sits there.

So there is a bug, but I see it differently than you do. Could you please
open a bug for it indicating as much detail as you can (debug output etc. -
mind to modify sebsitive date within prior to posting)?

Accordig to Ludovic, there is some likelihood that this is a Thunderbird bug. Please remove the file mimeTypes.rdf from your profile folder and try again. -Patrick

I did. The behaviour I described above did not change. Olav -- -- The Enigmail Project - OpenPGP Email Security For Mozilla Applications

Enigmail is an add-on that works with GnuPG to provide encryption for your email. If you don't want to encrypt your email, then you really don't need Enigmail. But then I suppose you always send your intimate letters on postcards, right? -- -- Roy Smith Windows 7 Home Premium Timestamp: Saturday, February 06, 2010 12:18:46 AM

assisstance

Hello
Thunderbird recommended I add enigmail to my e-mail program.
I did and now it says I have to download the exec. file
soooo...I went to do that and your site says I have to choose a mirror
file (I'm in the USA)
so I clicked on the Canada file and was told it took too long to connect.

and why do I need enigmail ?

Enigmail is the extension for using OpenPGP [GnuPG] encryption for Email. The .exe File You were directed to was probably for GnuPG since that is the Encryption Program that Enigmail is the frontend for. Unless You desire the ability to Sign and/or Encrypt Emails to & from folks then You really do not 'need' Enigmail. You didn't mention which O/S You are using so I cannot accurately point you to a good download Link. OK, from examination of Your Header I see that You are using Thunderbird 3.0.1 on Windows. Therefore I suggest You obtain GnuPG [if desired] from: http://www.gnupg.org/download/index.html [scroll mid-way down the page to Binaries and click on the 'FTP' on the right edge] JOHN ;) Timestamp: Friday 05 Feb 2010, 12:22 --500 (Eastern Standard Time)
