"Enigmime Service Not Available"

I am consistently getting the above error whenever I do anything related to the
Enigmail extension (looking at its About page, changing its Preferences, sending
an email, etc.)

I'm using the Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 2 and Enigmail's Nightly Build 0.94.1.2.0
(20070102). I realize these are not supported, but I've gathered from other
messages here that they work fine for most people.

The help pages at mozdev.org suggested this error is caused by an older version
of Enigmail (pre 0.89) not being cleanly removed, and that this could be fixed
by uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird or deleting the chrome directory
in the profile. Neither of these have had an effect.

-

I don't know if this problem is related, but I also cannot import my keyring.
The Key Management window gets stuck, displaying "Loading keys, please wait..."
in the status bar, and selecting "Import Keys from File" has no visible effect.

Any ideas?

I can only presume you mean Beta 1, as that is what you're sending the
message from in the first place.

True, this is often the case. Have you tried using a new profile
altogether to see if it works then?

The 'Best Way' to ensure a 'Clean" Install of Enigmail is to Delete the
Extension from the Profile Directory *prior* to installing the Nightly.
Off the top of My head I don't recall exactly what the complicated
'string' numbers are; but perhaps Patrick or Olav will provide these.

Any way that the De-Bug File could be sent so that Analysis could be
performed?

Yup, Thunderbird 2 Beta 1, sorry. Afaik, 2.0b2 isn't even released yet; I just
mixed up the numbers.

Also, I didn't mention this yet, but I'm on Windows XP.

There hasn't been any Beta 2 release, you are yourself using
Thunderbird/2.0b1 :)

Make sure you download the correct build, i.e. the one for Thunderbird
2.0 branch. I'm pretty sure that this works fine on Windows with TB 2.0
beta 1.

I can be so daft sometimes.

Thanks. I downloaded the 2.0 nightly, and now it works, as clearly visible.

Bug #9730

I'm affected by this bug http://bugzilla.mozdev.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9730
almost daily. I am worried. When an encrypted email sent to me can cause
a thunderbird crash, it is not far a fetched assumption that a properly
crafted encrypted mail sent to me can also cause code injection.

A recent bugzilla entry (for bug # 15951)

>> Known bug, no known resolution ...
>> *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 9730 ***

tells me that you are still aware of this bug.

A few weeks ago I compiled a debug version of thunderbird and a matching
version of enigmail to try to debug this, but I do not know a thing
about mozilla's or thunderbird's inner workings. The crash seemed to
happen in the javascript interpreter and some function in the backtrace
had "weakref" or similar in the name. Sorry, don't have the details
anymore. I had the feeling that this bug may have its roots in the
memory management of Thunderbird's javascript interpeter, and that is so
out of my league (as I said, I don't know anything about thunderbird's
inner workings), I gave up there.

I have searched the mailing list archives for references to 9730 to
investigate what the enigmail developer's know about this bug, but apart
from 1 short mail in April 2005 it came up empty. So may I ask, what do
you know about this bug? Why is it so difficult to fix?

If it helps, I can offer to send anyone who asks a mail that will most
likely crash thunderbird when you decrypt it with enigmail. Just send me
your public key.

yes, no doubt.

So did I a long time ago :-( The problem is deep inside Thunderbird, and
even though I know very well how to work _with_ the Thunderbird code,
it's still difficult to find or resolve bugs _inside_ Thunderbird code.
