Uninstalling enigmail

I did not see uninstall instructions, or did not recognize them as such.
I want this off my machine. it is more of a source of frustration and
blood-pressure raiser than anything else. at least to me.
there is nothing in any email i send or receive that requires
encryption, ever.
Thank you.

Enigmail is uninstalled just like any other Thunderbird extension.

Tools-->Extensions

Click Enigmail

Click "Uninstall"

Well, we're sorry to see you leave. If you'd like to give it another
try and ask us for help, then we'd be very happy to see if we can't
solve your problems with you.

Hi charley,

please use the standard Thunderbird mechanism: from the menu, choose
Tools -> Extensions, right click on Enigmail, choose Uninstall, and
close and restart Thunderbird.

OK, nobody urges you to use it. I like it and it workes like a charm.

If it did not work out for you, I assume that you did not install GnuPG
before installing Enigmail? Enigmail requires GnuPG, even the 1st time
wizard does. Currently GnuPG is not included with the Enigmail package
sinche there are licensing issues and it raises the problem how to
thoroughly detect whether a user already has GnuPG installed already.

Hi,

this is Charly. I also use Enigmail, works fine.

Excuse my ignorance. What is that "wizard"? Is it a Windows thing? I am
a Macintosh user, I don't have wizards.

I don't know how one does that in Windows. In MacOS X, one has to point
the MUA's OpenPGP Preferences, in my case Thunderbird 1.5.0.8, to
GnuPG's executable path, that's the starting point. Other settings
follow, e.g. key selection, keyservers, etc.

Enigmail not supported on FC6 x86_64

I tried installing Enigmail on TB1.5.0.7 on Fedora Core 6 x86_64 but I get

Is there a special build of Enigmail for this setup?

Hi Charly,

I was using the term to describe a feature that only applies when you
install Enigmail for the first time in a *clean* profile. Then, you are
asked if you'd like "Enigmail" (the first time "wizard") to set up some
common tings for you. This might include generation a key for example.
If you'd line to try out, shutdown TB, call it with "-profilemanager"
and create a new profile. Start that profile and install Enigmail. On
restart (using that profile again), you'll see what I called Wizard.

I was referring to something different. The problems the other user had
most probably resulted from either not having GnuPG on his system at all
or no keys or not understanding what Email signing and encryption is good
for. I assumed the first and only tried to explain that if the software
did not work as expected, one common goof is the missing GnuPG package.

Patrick: https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/71/ doesn't mention one
needs to also install GnuPG. Could you pleas change that?

Thanks for the hint -- done. I guess it takes a while until the change
shows up.

Thanks Olav, you have made me aware of a feature I didn't know about. As
far as I can remember, when I installed Enigmail for the first time, I
typed-in GnuPG's executable path, and set all the other requirements,
based upon previous experience with GnuPG and other MUAs.

the Enigmail team does not provide the x86_64 builds due to lack of hardware
and time. The current build was kindly contributed by A. M. Santos. Please
see http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download.html for contact details, maybe he
knows about what compiler needs to be used to get a build that worcs on FC6.

Enigmail adds OpenPGP message encryption and authentication to your
email client. It features automatic encryption, decryption and
integrated key management functionality. Enigmail requires GnuPG
(www.gnupg.org) for the cryptographic functions. Note: GnuPG is not part
of the installation.
