Re: [lists] feature request: "Don't sign/encrypt" button on enter passphrase dialog

With all due respect, I think the last two responses are missing the point.

Obviously, I know that I have to enter my passphrase to sign/encrypt a
message. Likewise, I can obviously disable GPG signing/encryption
before sending. I'm
not complaining about either of these things.

What I am unhappy with is the behavior of the Cancel button.

Shouldn't the Cancel button either (1) Cancel sending the message,
returning me
to the message composition window -- or (2) Cancel signing of the message?

In my case, if I click Cancel, I get an error that no Passphrase was
supplied. This does not make sense -- why would I supply a passphrase
if I want to
*CANCEL* the operation?!

After acknowledging this error, I am returned to the Enter Passphrase dialog
again, as if stuck in a loop.

The only way to "break free" from this Enter Passphrase dialog loop is
to leave
the passphrase blank, click OK, and then acknowledge three more error
messages,
until I'm finally returned to the composition window.

My point is that I shouldn't have to go through all these clicks just
to get out
of the Enter Passphrase dialog, and back to the main composition

Chris,

To further this thread, this looks like the open bug reported at the
following link. Can you confirm this?

http://mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=7011

I will have a look at it probably sometime next week unless someone
takes it sooner. The fact that it has remained open this long makes me
suspect that a solution is not trivial but, I will let you know what I find.

Cheers,
Russ

Yes, it does appear to be the same problem. (I tried searching bugzilla
before I posted, but somehow missed this one.) Thanks for pointing me
to the bug report!

I've added a comment to the bug report that the issue still exists.

Thanks, I appreciate it. It's funny to see Heikki's name in the bug
history. I work with him at OSAF now. :-)

Enigmail 0.94.0 will NOT work with Moz 1.7.x. The most recent version compatible
with Mozilla 1.7 is Enigmail 0.93.0 (http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download-old.html).

If you wish to run Enigmail 0.94.0, consider upgrading to SeaMonkey 1.0.x.
SeaMonkey is the Mozilla-based suite based on the Mozilla 1.8 tree.

Right, this is how it's supposed to work. It is a known bug in Enigmail
which has been fixed in the latest nightly builds.

I wish S/MIME (x.509 certificate signing/encryption) also had a
short-cut like that...

Simply have Mozilla open the file. Put the directory of the xpi into
your address bar. Then click the xpi, and it should start the install
process. If it does nothing, make sure xpinstall.enabled in about:config
is set to true. I know this will work in Firefox, but I am not 100% sure
that it will in Mozilla.

D'oh! I left that part out last night. If you download the XPI to your
computer, locate it with Explorer. Then just drag & drop the XPI onto a Mozilla
browser window and it will begin installation. Software installation needs to be
enabled for this to work (Preferences --> Advanced --> Software Installation).

You may also just click on the XPI link at the Enigmail downloads pages.

Feature request - Usenet: X-PGP-Sig

Hallo!
In many Newsgroups the
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
[...Text...]
-----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
style of signing PGP messages is unwanted. The correct way to do it
would be putting the signature into the header as follows:

X-PGP-Hash: SHA1
X-PGP-Key: 0x97C17FD8
X-PGP-Sig: GnuPG-v1.4.3 From,Newsgroups,Subject,Date,Message-ID
	iD8DBQFEfgsp1W3yFJfBf9gRAvSOAKC4JCZe/CkymDjg0Fruc0TYHCS7cwCfSCjh
	AZNkC1CWe8o0FlOply9anww=
	=DHqW

But there are several issues with it using enigmail. Enigmail can't sign
postings in this style - but much worse: it can't verify other postings
using it :-(

Please see http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/infosys/servers/news/pgpcontrol/FORMAT
for details.

I think this behaviour is on the one hand not good for the reputation of
enigmail/mozilla and on the other hand for the involved Usenet user.

I hope this feature could be included in one of the next releases of
enigmail...

  Andreas Weller

Re: How to install enigmail

Thanks Andrew and John,

This is exactly the type of answer I wanted. I did upgrade to Seamonkey
1.02 and enigmail 0.94.0 before I read your replies, the two together
work real nice.
