Today Pane future

I don't know if this is the right place to discuss it.

Despite that I like the new "Today Pane", I think it is far from being
usable. I am not sure if its current state is just an alpha version or
no more features are planed in a future.

Anyway IMHO such kind of pane should have some additional features that
most of programs have; like Chandler Dashboard, Microsoft Outlook Today
Pane, Evolution...

- More visible: greater and centered area, default on startup.

- Different sources: mail, calendar, rss feeds and custom connectors
(weather forecast, quotes, ...).

- Customizable view by source: size, detail level.

I would like to know if are these "basic" set of features planed in a
near future ( or not )?

My biggest concern is that it won't feature a higher grid between
entries. I remember reading elsewhere (I hope I'm wrong) that the XUL
widgets don't support multiline grids (in that one row can have multiple
lines of text. Then again, the "Addons" form contains these when listing
the addons.

Re: Today Pane future

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback.
The current implementation of the Today Pane is just the first step. So,
more will follow soon.

I really like the ideas you've mentioned. And I'm pretty sure that we
can do things in that direction after 1.0. For 1.0 it is planned to
display Tasks & Events (only). See [1].

Regards,
Christian

Both, CTRL+N & CTRL+M creates new Mails. In Mail Mode CTRL+N should
create a new mail, in Calendar Mode a new event, in Task Mode a new task.

CTRL+M should create in every mode a new message.
CTRL+E should create in every mode a new event. (currently assigned to
"Edit as New")
CTRL+T should create in every mode a new task (currently assigned to
"Get New Messages for Current Account")

Re: Lightning Menus

I think that Alt-1 through Alt-3 would be perfect to switch between
Mail/Calendar/Tasks modes in Windows, but hopefully Mac/UNIX users
will say if that would work on their computers.

By the way, there is already a key binding in Lightning to switch from
Mail mode to Calendar mode (called "openLightningKey", mapped to
Ctrl-3). That would probably have to be removed or changed.

Are there any reason why Ctrl+3 needs to be removed? It's not used
by Thunderbird as far as I know. That's why it was chosen for Lightning.

It doesn't matter to me if it stays. I only mentioned it in case it
would break Christian's new key bindings.

Re: Today Pane future

A possible place for the today pane is the bottom, message pane view of
the 3-panes.

I like the current location as i am using the Classic Layout with the
message pane and on my widescreen laptop screen, there is enough space
on the left for the today pane.

On my right, all unread emails and RSS feeds and on the left my calendar
and tasks. Perfect for me. No need to include that all into one as all
my unread emails are way too much to be captured in a 'today' pane and
they change way too often.

means you're aware of this conflict. You know how critical it is to
change widely accepted key bindings?
