1.4RC1 won't install

My operating system is Windows Me. I've never had a problem
installing mozilla before this. Whenever I try to install the latest
version (1.4RC1) it causes itself to crash right at the end with a
strange hardware noise and when I try to run it the same crash occurs.
(the browser and all the other components won't work at all).

(error message) Mozilla has caused an error in XPCOM.DLL.
                    Mozilla will now close.

I had to reinstall version 1.3.1 in order to use mozilla.

Re: 1.4RC1 won't install

Well, I see you have almost the same problem.

Lets hope the Mozilla-Team ads 1.4.1 compability!

Cheers!

Re: 1.4RC1 won't install

I'm seeing the same problem on Windows XP Pro. At the end of the
installation (and on any other attempt to start Mozilla) I get a fault.

Loading the MSVC debugger I see the fault is in XPCOM.DLL, but otherwise
there is no symbolic information so the debugger cannot tell me where
exactly things went wrong.

Don't see a build with debug symbols on the website, and I don't really
want to go through the exercise of building Mozilla just now :).

Re: 1.4RC1 won't install

Hi guys

KewL !

I'm not alone...

The only thing weird I can find is that in the Java Plug-In applet in
Control Panel, in the Browser Tab, IE is checked but Mozilla, listed as
"Netscape 6" is not checked. When I try to set it and then "Apply"... I get
this message :

(translated from a french JRE)

Impossible to modify the browser's settings
Verify that Netscape 6 is correctly installed on your system and/or that
you have sufficient administrator rights to do this operation.

Like I am the administrator of my box!

Just found this... I'm trying it now.

Cya in a jiff.

Re: 1.4RC1 won't install

Ya... what the ? did I find... "D'oh!"

http://www.mozillazine.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12708&sid=fe834920c88a0057f431b263d0365803

Which says :

I had this problem too on a Win ME system. After uninstalling, there were
still a number of files left under Program Files\mozilla.org\mozilla, so I
deleted (actually, renamed) that Mozilla directory and did a fresh install.
All seems to be working now.

I'm trying it!

BTW, I have no idea about the double post???

Re: 1.4RC1 won't install

Got it.

I uninstalled 1.3,
deleted the left over folder (%drive%:\Program Files\Mozilla.org),
re-installed RC1 and voilà!

I did not know if unistalling was going to remove the profiles so I
renamed the folders just in case. Anyone can confirm?

Oh! BTW, I'm always yelling after the "comquats" who always ask me
things that are in the book... you know... the RTFM rule. In the
"Mozilla 1.4 RC 1 Release Notes", under "Installation Notes",
the first line reads : "Install into a new empty directory. Installing
on top of previously installed builds may cause problems."

Oooops!

The comquat!
