[Announcement] OWL Plugin now supports namespaces

Dear Protege users,

we are happy to announce a new release of Protege's OWL support that
includes many major improvements. If you are interested in the Web
Ontology Language and the Semantic Web, please download build 31 of the
OWL Plugin and the latest Protege 2.0 version at

http://protege.stanford.edu/plugins/owl/

As usual, please make sure you do a clean re-install, and please use
"Import..." to load existing owl files (discard old pprj files).

Some of the new features include (details below):
- Support for multiple namespaces and file inclusion
- Improved editing of equivalent classes
- Better handling of datatype and object properties
- Improved support for annotation properties
- Important bugfixes with complex expressions

Support for multiple namespaces and file inclusion
--------------------------------------------------

This is the first version with support for multiple namespaces and
files. To get a feeling of how it looks like, you can directly load the
(infamous) wine ontology from the web into Protege, and edit it. To do
so, go to Import... and then enter

Re: DEFINING equality relationships

You can do this easily in OWL (build 31 of OWL Plugin). Just define the
classes and then edit the "SameAs" tab to add the other classes that
shall have the same meaning. Alternatively, you can add them to the
class definition (formerly equivalent classes) although this is probably
not what you wish to express.

Note that stating that two classes are the "same" does not have any
impact in the Protege editor. It will only affect the classifier.

Alternatively, if you just wish to express different names for the same
concept, you can define different labels under the Labels tab.

I am a bit curious though, what your intended interpretation of
"equality" is in your case. Can you give an example in the context of
an ontology?

Hi, Ray

Thanks for your reply. In your response, you say "ProjectView is a
panel
not a top level window or frame,so nothing be showed up".Then how could
I put ProjectView in a top level window or frame?

You did it. The post is useful. Cannot fix, because there is a problem with
the server...
Will fix very soon.

I know that part. It is fine in various aspects, but I have many diverse
criticisms on technical aspects.

Re: Protege XML backend and ?xml

UTF-8 and <?xml tags are in fact different problems :

1. What I did is I rebooted my linux box under Windows 2000 and tested
with Protege1.9, using the
Java VM provided with Protégé and the newspaper example.

On my machine, even in windows and without any french accent I still
dont hace an <?xml tag.
On windows the absence of <?xml does not produce an exception so
everything goes unnoticed.

So I downloaded the xml backend source, and looked at Xmlprint.java.
There is a function named
"walk" which does the job of outputting the <?xml when the node is of
type DOCUMENT.

Unfortunately it seems that the case "DOCUMENT_NODE" is never reached.
So I modified the source
to test for : node.getNodeName().equals("protegekb") then output the
<?xml tags, and it works okay.

I believe this can also be used to customize the <?xml for use with
Oracle XDB which maps schema
to relationnal tables and needs a special <?xml syntax. So at the end
all this work might be useful.

2. On Linux what one has to do is set LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8. Unfortunately
the latest JDK (1.4.2_02)
is limited to supporting ISO8859 on older Linux like mine, and UTF-8 on

Re: How to re-use facets in metaslots?

Ray,

The place I get stuck is this:

:standard-slot
      :a-slot
            :b-slot

:standard-class
      :my-metaclass
            :my-submetaclass
            :other-submetaclass

Add a slot to :my-submetaclass of new slot :xyz-info
This :xyz-info slot is of metaslot type :b-slot and shows up in the "slots"
tab.

Make some instances of :my-submetaclass and :other-submetaclass. In this
process, I realize the xyz-info slot really should be defined in
:my-metaclass, not in :my-submetaclass so that :other-submetaclass can use
it.

There appears to be no way (in the UI) to add the :xyz-info metaslot
instance (which I believe is really a facet) to :my-metaclass. Even though
:xyz-info shows up as a "slot" in the slot list, it is not a template slot
and thus the "add existing slot" option in the UI does not list it as a
possibility for adding :xyz-info to :my-metaclass.
