eDirectory 8.8

Hi all!

We have been running quite happily for some time now with eDir 8.7.3.9
on our NetWare 6.5sp7 boxes. However, with the prospect of adding some
OES Linux boxes to our tree, it looks increasingly like we ought to be
looking at upgrading eDir 8.8.x.

What is everyone else doing? Have you upgraded? What caveats (Universal
Password, other compatibility, etc)? Experiences and war stories? What
are your thoughts about the value or necessity of the upgrade?

Thanks for your feedback,

Craig

Re: eDirectory 8.8

Hello Craig,

We upgraded to OES 2 SP1 on some of our boxes then we left others on old NW 6.5 SP8...

We found that the mix of 8.8 and 8.7 caused stuck obituaries..

We decided to upgrade all boxes to the latest 8.8 SP5 a couple of months ago...

Since then we have been painstakingly free from many edir issues...

So the lesson learnt, just like the good ole days make sure all your boxes run the same version..

From a client perspective we noticed no problems (after we did the above)

Hopefully you get some useful information here - I am interested too for the same reasons.

Have some other NDS related questions on my mind at the moment too - might type that one up tonight.

Have you noticed any significant increase in resource utilisation (RAM,
disk)? I have read that 8.8 is more demanding in that regard.

Re: eDirectory 8.8

You will reduce a lot of your problems if you make sure your MR and RW Replicas are all 8.8. RO replicas should be okay on 8.7.

Hey Craig,

We have found the opposite, utilization is actually down a little. I think this is mentioned in the Service Pack that they addressed high utilization.

Re: [ngw] Daylight saving issue?

In fact, I just checked and it happens (in reverse) on the first Sunday in April as well. This seems to be using
US time zone daylight savings dates, but shouldn't be applied here.
Anyone know what's happening. I need to fix this for my users.

Hi all. I think I'm having what looks like a daylight saving snafu. We are in Brisbane Australia (UTC-10) and
have no daylight saving. Using GW8SP1 on NW6.5 SP8. My daily calendar is set to 0800-1600 for work hours. On
the 26th October 2009, it changes to 0700-1500 (1 hour earlier). This time shift is the same in other users
calendars in the same post office as well.

The PO settings show the correct Timezone, as do the Workstations (XP Pro SP3).
The NW server has DST turned off.

Has anyone else seen this? Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Re: Daylight saving issue?

Whilst I haven't seen this in GW, I am having a problem with a similar issue with the Mac. It seems that the ISO TZ data file reads as follows:

zdump -v /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Melbourne | grep 2009
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Melbourne  Sat Apr  4 15:59:59 2009 UTC = Sun Apr  5 02:59:59 2009 EST isdst=1 gmtoff=39600
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Melbourne  Sat Apr  4 16:00:00 2009 UTC = Sun Apr  5 02:00:00 2009 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=36000
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Melbourne  Sat Oct  3 15:59:59 2009 UTC = Sun Oct  4 01:59:59 2009 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=36000
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Melbourne  Sat Oct  3 16:00:00 2009 UTC = Sun Oct  4 03:00:00 2009 EST isdst=1 gmtoff=39600

The Mac version of this file reads:

/local/timezone  Sat Apr  4 15:59:59 2009 UTC = Sun Apr  5 02:59:59 2009 EST
/local/timezone   Sat Apr  4 16:00:00 2009 UTC = Sun Apr  5 02:00:00 2009 EST
/local/timezone   Sat Oct  3 15:59:59 2009 UTC = Sun Oct  4 01:59:59 2009 EST
/local/timezone   Sat Oct  3 16:00:00 2009 UTC = Sun Oct  4 03:00:00 2009 EST

In both cases, even when it is Daylight Savings time, the TZ code is DST (should be EDT or AEDT) - I'm not sure when this change occurred.

Because of this, some apps are not looking at the TZ code - they are calculating their own or looking at the 'isdst' field or the 'gmtoff' field. This is extremely annoying. To simulate DST properly, I have had to (virtually) relocate the Mac to New Caledonia because some apps have the correct time and other apps (notably Entourage) do not.

There is also a similar problem that I'm having with some Tomcat apps with is fixed with tzupdater.jar from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Wayne

<div><p>Whilst I haven't seen this in GW, I am having a problem with a similar issue with the Mac.
