Re: Netware : 2010 end of General Support ..

OES2 w/SP1 isn't that bad (albeit anything before SP1 was rubbish), we are currently using it here for our file cluster, groupwise, DNS/DHCP. Soon to have iPrint running off it and that just leaves ZENWORKS...

Infact there was a vast improvement in our iSCSI speed when we went to OES2, for some reason Netware did not perform well at all.

Some things are annoying, like you can't have two DHCP servers assigned to a DHCP Scope. But then other things are improved like iManager.

One a side note, domain services for windows is a mess. You can't cluster it, you can't add Microsoft AD servers as DC's, and Novell still does not have a 64-bit windows client.

It will be interesting .. there are bigger shops than us that are heavily running apps on Netware, and a year is not a long time to move all that across to a platform that is 'almost' there in my opinion.
On that note, does anyone run PCounter? A Linux version, anyone? We run a password change app that only exists on NW.

It's all good to say 'move to Linux' but Novell had better put the developers behind making sure that any Linux/OES issues are addressed quickly, including existing shortcomings ..

This was the reason the QLD government (except Health) dropped Novell. They work on a 5 year migration plan once they are satisfied with the platform. Consequently they migrated to M$.

Novell should have made sure that OES was as good (if not better) than Netware before making any EOL plans. Far too many people remember being burnt with Neware 5.0. There still is no satisfactory Novell replacement for BM IMO.

That being said, there is VASTLY more stuff you can do on Linux.

Are there any benefits that you've seen of running the integrated DHCP?
I haven't touched it in years, since the vanilla Linux one works so
well for me.

That's one reason i'm a fan of clustering at the VM level and then
letting the software inside the VM be completely ignorant of the clustering.

Re: ZFD7 Group Policy not applying?

Found the problem. in the GP, I was turning on 'Classic Shell' for XP, which seems to turn off the Active
Desktop I had set ON in the same GP, which is required for non-BMP desktops .. even though if you manually
turn it on in the correct order, it works fine. One click and they all came alive, just took a very long time to
find the culprit.

I often find that group policy for setting desktop wall paper never works. Regardless of it being a netware
network or a microsoft one.
Best to use a command line tool to set the desktop as part of your logon script.

I think there is a microsoft article on this somewhere...

If everything else is applying properly I would say you don't have a problem with group policy.

Hi all,
I have a strange issue. Running the latest ZFD7, and XPSP3 desktops.
I have a user associated Group Policy that sets a desktop wallpaper. When I log in, the desktops doesn't get
changed. But if I locally run a 'gpupdate /force', or 'gpedit.msc' (make a change, undo the change, and
apply it) the wallpaper is applied instantly.

Has anyone seen this? I'm knee deep in debug logs, and there are no obvious errors that I can see.

Thanks.

There won't be a 64 bit XP/2003 client, from memory.  But Vista/2008 v2 is out now.

I haven't seen any enterprise deployments of Vista yet (except on notebooks).

QLD Govt did a Vista MOE/SOE trial - 12GB image, 2 hour deployment.

Subject: [NovellSchools] Access to australia.gov.au through BorderManager

Just a quick one. Can anybody running through a BorderManager server,
could you please go to the following URL, and let me know if it works
for you:

  http://www.australia.gov.au/

We are getting "The connection to the server was reset while the page
was loading" in Firefox (IE is less helpful). If we go through a Squid
proxy, it works fine. Other Federal government websites (Tax, DFAT, etc)
are fine. Logs show a successful (200) status.

The version of the BM server will also be handy (we're on 3.9).

Thanks,

Craig
