Anti-Virus thoughts?

Hi all,
Lately we have been seeing lots of virus hits from a "generic downloader a.b" virus, seemingly spreading
via USB sticks, (the file Hypinit32.exe is the culprit) and causing lots of angst on our LAN, and also at
homes where PCs are not adequately protected. We are using McAfee VirusScan, for desktop protection
here, and have been underwhelmed by McAfee's support, and to be honest, the product in general. The are yet
to product a solution to removing the virus from a PC, even though I have manually been able to eradicate it
with XP Safe mode + hidden folder deletion + registry editing.

I was wondering if anyone else had seen any outbreaks of this particular virus, and/or if anyone had a
positive review to offer of the AV software you are currently using?

Much thanks.

Library Software

Hi All,

I was just wondering what software everyone uses for their Library
Cataloguing system. We have been looking at 'Functional Solutions'
eLibrary, ( http://www.librarysolutions.com.au/elib.htm ) and I was
wanting to see if anyone else using a Novell network, uses this product.

Does it integrate well?

We used it at Clairvaux MacKillop for quite a few years, when I was there .. not sure if they have migrated away

Re: Library Software

Well I found that it didn't really integrate at all with Novell.

It requires Windows Server to run on as it utilising MS SQL server and IIS. If you can get past that though it
will be totally indifferent to having Novell around... it uses its own authentication mechanisms and
doesn't even look at a LDAP directory to handle that.

The product has got better over the years, there used to be some really annoying error catching in the client
software.

The support can be interesting. The pre-sales people will tell you of their helpdesk and how easy it is to get
onto. Unfortunately though, the helpdesk phone number is actually a receptionist who will log your call
and have someone get back to you... which they do, to their credit, but it can get frustrating waiting
around for someone to call when you were promised an on-demand support line.

The people who do the support are very competent. They understand their product extremely well but also
know how it sits on a network and can troubleshoot Windows Server component problems effectively. I
remember once having a problem and allowed them to Citrix in and they managed to resovlve it over a day or so
(complex issue).

Just some thoughts...

Re: Library Software

Hi Robert

We have used eLibrary for some time now.  Whilst I cannot speak for the librarians regarding its functionality, from network point view it is trouble free.  The support is good.  Unless something has changed recently it does require a windows server and they do prefer a dedicated machine, but can be talked out of that requirement :).

Cheers

I do remember once talking to the eLibrary developers about using LDAP for authentication/integration,
and the actual term "LDAP" drew a blank expression. That concerned me slightly ..:-)

Disable TaskKill.exe

Hi,
Has anyone encountered student's using taskkill.exe on local XP Pro PCs to kill important processes. Is
there a GroupPolicy setting that will stop it from being able to kill processes?

Looing for some input on this.

Yes, have observed the students here doing this as well.
