Trying to clone a disk, dd fails

OES2. Wanting to "clone" a disk, to replace current boot/system disk. I know the system disk is /dev/cciss/c1d0. (two controllers, built in has no drives connected). Booted system with a Knoppix cd and became root. And I felt so empowered. "dd if=/dev/cciss/c1d0 of=/dev/c1d1" fails with "no such device" for c1d0. Or so it says. I did find that, in Knoppix land, there is a /dev/cciss/blah and a /KNOPPIX/dev/cciss/blah (among other devices). The former shows todays date the latter a date of 4 years back, which seems close to the original disk formatting date. But, even saying "dd if=/KNOPPPIX/cciss/c1d0 blah" gives the same result. So, one is very puzzled. joe a.

OES11 KDE login fails for LUM users

Fresh OES11 install. There was an error during install "sysadmin failed creating the directory objects". But only that. Several hits on that, but nothing seems pertinent. The only issue (so far) is that LUM users cannot login. Did find lum users group was not included in groups for the server. Added that. In a terminal session, as root, "id lum_users" reports user is seen and belongs the the expected groups. When attempting a login via KDE GUI, /var/log/messages shows" ------------------------------------------------------ Jun 5 09:33:51 my_server kdm: localhost:2[7253]: pam_sm_authenticate in pam_ncl.c (novell-client's pam)is called Jun 5 09:33:51 my_server kdm: localhost:2[7253]: inside ncl pam : user name obntained is : [_My-User] Jun 5 09:33:51 my_server kdm: localhost:2[7253]: Password is already available to the NCL PAM module. oes11 and oes2 coexist

Just beginning to delve into OES11. Have a general purpose OES1 box for retirement. Thinking of having a general purpose "admin" box installed as OES11, into an OES2 farm with clusters and eDir 8.8 sp-"pretty-recent". Are there any immediate areas of concern? I see numerous concerns for the clusters (EVMS deprecated, for one, no 32 bit upgrade path, for another), but nothing that leaps out at me for a single box. joe a.

vncserver shell, after patching (?)

OES2, SP3, just patched. On some boxes, vnc sessions do not set bash as the default shell. I first noticed this after patching, when some aliases definedi in ~/.bashrc did not work. But some that have been patched are fine. That is, they do work. echo $SHELL says /bin/bash for working boxes, but /bin/sh for non working boxes. I presume the latter does not read ~/.bashrc. A ssh (putty) session "echo $SHELL" says /bin/bash for *all* boxes. And in ssh session the aliases work, for all boxes. At this hour, I am at a loss. Clearly, (?) this says something about the startup is not the same. Using "vncserver" to start up. joe a.

Update - went without a hitch. joe a. >>> "joea <at> j4computers.com" 11/20/11 5:44 PM >>> No reason, I guess. Never really considered it. Thanks for mentioning it. I can see that it would be useful where there are more than two nodes and resources are "balanced" between nodes. In some shops, tho, a cluster leave on an unused node, in a two node cluster, would be fine too. But, then again, maintenance mode may be less time consuming. I'll have to play with it. joe a. >>> On 11/20/2011 at 11:56 AM, Tom Anstey wrote: > joe a., is there a problem with the "cluster maintenance on" command? > > In other words, are you for some reason unable to put the cluster into > maintenance mode? evms mystery tour

Need to know how to delete EVMS volumes, containers, blah. Seems simple enough, and have done this before, successfully, (IIRC). OES2 SP3 recent patches. However, using evmsgui, the objects I wish to delete are not shown, via "Action, Delete" Selecting Volume, Container, Segment, none show the objects of interest. They do exist and can be seen in other tabs of evmsgui. Activate, mount, etc, seem to have no effect on them. Can get them visible in the selection tabs, by manually activating, stealing commands from the cluster resource scripts. But, even after deleting, evms continues to see it as (four) individual disks, (multiipath stuff) albeit uninitialized. Even after they are unpresented via the SAN magic box. Yes, I do save and even exit evmsgui, aware of the peculiarities of the gui. For this part, have tried rescan_scsi_bus.sh and restarting multipathd, but only a reboot of the node seems to make them go away. Since there are going to be some number of these disks to remove (having been replaced with larger), so really need to grok the proper way to cleanly remove these items. joe a.

been cleaning up aliases and so forth, to make sure system messages go to right places. Two servers refuse to forward root mail to the correct address, preferring to send the to "themselves" I can see that the /etc/postfix/virtual file has the correct entry, yet the /etc/postifx/virtual.db does not. YAST seems to have forgotten to do something here and I have not, so far, found how to get virtual.db recreated. Hints?
