internationalization of koha?

Hi all,
I have partially installed koha 1.01 and I am impressed with the completeness
functionality if offers. I was wondering how many files do I have to translate
in order for it to speak and present itself to users in their own native tongue?

thanks for any answers.

Also, how to populate the tables in mysql with koha bypassing the
"commercialism" of placing some orders - as I have noticed...?

setup: some paths

Hi,
With many actions that are invoked in both opac and koha the server seems to be
loking for .../cgi-bin/koha/somefile.pl instead for cgi-bin/somefile.pl. Why?

The INSTALL file instructs to copy all *.pl file into cgi-bin, not to
cgi-bin/koha/ dir. Is this something i am missing?

Also,
Is there a way to create a CNAME in /etc/hosts (I know this question should be
going to a more general linux group)?
My /ets hosts file just lists 192.168.1.1 twice, once for opac.private.org, and
second time for koha.private.org. It doesn't work, though.
http.conf has <VirtualHosts> directive set for both but it doesn't work. Show
only the opac stuff, not the intranet stuff.

Any hints welcome and appreciated
thanks

Hi Benedict,

Koha was designed with the thought it mind that it should be easily
translated into other languages. In our case Maori.
Having said that, the aim has not been achieved very well.

To change the webbrowser based interface would be easier than the telnet
issues and returns.
All the html would need to be edited of course. And the Output.pm file.
Plus probably the majority of the .pl scripts.

A better way to do this, I think will be to make use of
Locale::gettext perl module
http://search.cpan.org/search?module=Locale::gettext

If the scripts are rewritten to make use of this, it should be easy to make
interfaces in many languages.

Thats the plan anyway :-)

setup: some paths

What I ended up doing is making the opac site the default and then added a
virtualhost on the port no to 6588 (could be just about anything) so that
users would point it to 192.168.1.1:6588 and this would get it to the Koha
admin side of things..

in the Apache httpd.comf file I have done the following

Listen koha.mysite.co.nz:6588
listen barney.mysite.co.nz:80

Port 80
Port 6588

AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
AddHandler cgi-script .pl
#
#	To use server-parsed HTML files
#
AddType text/html .shtml AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
AddType text/html .html AddHandler server-parsed .html
AddType text/html .inc
AddHandler server-parsed .inc

<VirtualHost koha.mysite.co.nz>
	ServerAdmin matthew.kelly@...
	DocumentRoot /home/httpd/html/intranet-html
	ServerName koha.mysite.co.nz
	ErrorLog /home/httpd/html/intranet-html/logs/error_log
	TransferLog /home/httpd/html/intranet-html/logs/access_log
</VirtualHost>

just a thought

Hi,
Just a thought on "koha", it means donation, a gift, contribution in Maori I
infer. Believe it or not but in Polish it means: He [or She] loves... .
Given the fact that love is a gift of one to another then Polish and Maori must
be related languages, ha ha !

postgres

Hi all,
just wondering whether koha.mysql will work with postgresql?

Postgres is included with many Linux distros. Has anyone tried that already?

Benedict

Re: setup: some paths

Hi,
the VirtualHost problem was resolved through care reading on vhost in apache. I
made a mistake with <VirtualHost> directive. NameVirtualHost was missing and I
didn't use an IP address within the <VirtualHost hire.IP.address> directive.

thanks for hints.

Still the problem of localisation remains I will be interested in hearing how
to translate the project.

Hi Benedict

Yep, when we first started developing koha, we were using postgres.
We switched to mysql because some of the searches were too slow in postgres,
and because I was more familair with how mysql works.

I dont see any reason why someone with more postgres knowledge wouldnt be
able to get koha running with it.

tar ball defective?

Hi,
While untarring the tarball with koha-1.01.tar.gz I get these messages:
gzip: stdin: decompression OK, trailing garbage ingored
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I am using tar zxvf koha-1.01.tar.gz command.

Is this OK?

Also, the filenames eg. front-mouseover-memeber.gif are not called from scripts
by their right name. Apache complains that such file doesn't exist. That's
because it is called as front-mouseover-members.gif.

regards,
Benedict
