dialing my regular ISP with my Treo?

I have WirelessModem and a Mac.

Of course I have the problem where I can only keep connected for a
short time before the connection dies.

Would it be any better to connect to my regular ISP rather than my
cell phone network?

How would I initiate the call to my regular ISP?

Probably not.

If you're on Sprint, it will cost you $0.39 per minute to dial a
regular modem.

I'm using a bluetooth connection rather than WirelessModem, and have
noticed that my connection *also* drops after a short period of
time. The way I fixed it might work for you too.

For me, the drop occurs when I haven't been using the connection for
a few minutes. Thus, my fix was to tell my computer to make some
minor use of the connection periodically. You can do that by
launching the terminal window and typing something like

ping -i 18 COMPUTERNAME

where COMPUTERNAME is the name of any computer on the net. For
example, you could do

ping -i 18 www.google.com

This sends a "ping" message to google (which creates activity on your
connection but uses very little bandwidth) every 18 seconds.
Probably a longer time interval would work just as well, but I
haven't tried.

Even on nights/weekends?

This is not the issue that I (or most of us) have been having. It
happens when the connection has been used a lot and seems to get
overrun.

That works for me, with Sprint and a Powerbook and Treo 600.

I used WirelessModem for two years with my Treo 300 and it worked
pretty well. This September I switched to a Treo 650 and found that
WirelessModem simply does not work. You can set it up and configure
it and everything looks good, but as soon as you actually try to make
a connection, the 650 reboots.

>From what I understand, from searching message boards and this list's
archives, this is probably related to serial port settings being
different on the 650, and WirelessModem would need to be upgraded to
work with the 650, but the author isn't interested in doing so because
of the 650's built-in bluetooth dialup networking.

I posted to this list asking if anyone knew how to make WirelessModem
work with a Treo 650 but got no responses at all. This recent
discussion is the first sign of life I've seen on the list since I
subscribed.

If the original poster is having the same problem I and others have

I have tried to get WirelessModem to work reliably on the Treo 650,
but have been unable to do so. 2 other developers have also looked at
it, but have also been unable to get it to work well. I will probably
discontinue selling WirelessModem in the near future, but when I do
so, I'm sure that people will complain that I'm no longer offering it.

I strongly recommend that Treo 650 users use Bluetooth Dial up
Networking as it is supported and not a workaround like
WirelessModem. If your carrier doesn't have the Treo 650 Bluetooth
DUN enabled, I'd suggest contacting them and request it.

Yes, but what if your laptop doesn't have bluetooth?

reply for susan's question

You can just get a D-Link usb bluetooth adapter. I got one for my
ibook. It is just a little bigger than a quarter in size and works
great. Just plug it into your usb port and you are good to go.

$50 for a USB adaptor sounds like the most reliable solution
