XUL support in KDE

Hello!

I have placed a wish request to implement XUL into the Konqueror web
browser available in KDE.

By this way, I would like to address anyone with interest to have XUL
support in the KDE desktop environment to vote for this project or also
to help with development (if possible).

Please vote at:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118378

Thanx

SwiXAT - the Swing-XML Authoring Tool - 0.5.0 released

I'm glad to announce that the version 0.5.0 of SwiXAT - the Swing XML
Authoring Tool - has been released.

SwiXAT (http://www.swixat.org) is a Swing-based authoring tool for the
quick and easy development of GUI Java applications. It implements a
true MVC framework and uses SwiXML as the XUL engine (without any
modification to its source code!), BeanShell (or Groovy) as a scripting
language for the controller, and JXPath as the binding mechanism between
the view and model. It provides a complete environment in which it is
possible to almost write an entire Java Swing application without
writing Java compiled code, maintaining however the power of any
java-based application. The use of XPath makes it very simple to
traverse the object tree of the application's business model.
SwiXAT is released under the Apache 2.0 license.

This new version adds an improved support for JList, JComboBox and JTree
components; two new data sources, DOMDataSource and ObjectDataSource
were added; the support for JComboBox renderers was added, and the model
event handling has been simplified. The user's guide (over 70 pages) has
been updated with the documentation about the new features.

You can read all the changes at
http://www.swixat.org/docs/changes-report.html and download the last
version from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=99002

Efficient Java user interface development with SwiXML

Hello!

"Efficient Java user interface development with SwiXML" is an introduction to
open source library SwiXML (http://www.swixml.org). In scope of this course
you will learn

*) how to save time on user interface development with SwiXML
*) how to pre-view user interfaces without Java
*) how to embed SwiXML user interfaces into your Java applications
*) how to implement event handling using SwiXML
*) how to package SwiXML user interfaces in JAR files
*) how to avoid errors when using SwiXML in other UI frameworks such as
eclipse RCP.

"Efficient Java user interface development with SwiXML" is a free e-mail
course, which consists of four parts. Each day you will get one part of the
course delivered into you e-mail box. These e-mail contain theoretical
explanations of how you can apply SwiXML in your applications as well as
practical examples, images and source code examples, which you can download
from the URLs given in the text of those e-mails.

Can you help?

We're looking for volunteers to help accelerate the development of XUI.
To kick start the process we've posted a list of tasks for upcoming
releases of XUI. The list is by no means exhaustive. If you have some
time and effort to spare we'd love to hear from you.

You can find the list at http://xui.sourceforge.net/

W3C Launches Web Application Format Working Group - Comments?

Hello,

The W3C has launched a new working group chartered
to create a specification for a declarative format for
applications and user interfaces.

The W3C Web Application Formats Working Group page
states:

This deliverable should be based on an existing
application/UI format, such as Mozilla's XUL,
Microsoft's XAML, Macromedia's MXML or Laszlo Systems'
LZX, provided the owners of the format are willing to
contribute. The format should allow embedded program
code. This format, combined with the deliverables
below and existing technologies including XHTML, CSS,
XForms, SVG and SMIL, should provide a strong basis
for rich client application development.

   More @ http://www.w3.org/2006/appformats

   Comments? Thoughts?

   - Gerald

Rich-client at Javapolis

As part of JavaPolis 2005 we are

1 Showing off the latest XUI NetBeans plug-ins at the Plug-in Bazaar
(http://wiki.javapolis.com/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=15036)

2 Hosting a Bird-Of-a-Feather discussion on Wednesday night the 14th of
Decemeber.

In particular we'd like to welcome anyone with an interest in XUI,
Rich-Client, or XUL in general to the BOF discussion on Wednesday. We
will give a short presentation on XUI but we would like to have an open
discussion on issues surrounding rich-client development, deployment and
so on.

There are also a couple of other sessions at the conference for those
interested in rich-client development.

eBay framework released as open-source

We've just launched a new ebay codebase project at
https://xui-ebay-richclient.codebase.ebay.com/.

The project extends the open-source XUI framework
(http://ww.sf.net/projects/xui) to facilitate the construction of
rich-client applications for eBay.

The goals of the project are two fold. First we want to build
rich-client applications that make it easier for end users to interact
with eBay. Rich-client can help in this regard by caching information
locally and reducing the need for round trips to the server.

Secondly we want to make the developer's life a little easier by taking
care of some low level plumbing, particularly some of the details
surround the SOAP interfaces. Even though there is a Java SDK for eBay
we feel that a higher level/more abstracted api would be better for
everyday use and hence we have wrapped some of the APIs.

The project includes a demo application to show how the framework can be
used. It is a StoreManager design for people and companies who want to
setup and manage eBay stores.

We hope you'll find it of interest and if it is let us know what you
think - good bar or indifferent!
