ANN: olpc realness summit > end of may > realness.org

Waveplace is pleased to announce the OLPC REALNESS SUMMIT.

No hype, no bashing, no wireless, no room service.  Just straight talk about what works, what doesn't, and why we do what we do.

WHERE: Maho Bay Camps on the island of St John, US Virgin Islands (steps from the beach)

WHEN:  May 28, 29, 30, 31

HOW MUCH:  $300 for four nights, including lodging

Twelve invited talks and discussions, three a day, from five continents and the Caribbean:

* WAVEPLACE:  Tim Falconer

* OLPC:  Adam Holt

* SUGAR LABS:  Bernie Innocenti

* ASIA:  Mike Dawson from the OLPC Afghanistan

* SOUTH AMERICA:  Marta Voelcker from Brazil and Carlos Rabassa from Plan Ceibal, Uruguay

* AFRICA: Beth Santos from the Step Up OLPC (São Tomé and Príncipe)

* EUROPE: Christoph Derndorfer from OLPC Austria

* CARIBBEAN: Lunise Cerin from Haiti, formerly of USAID and Save the Children, and John Engle of Haiti Partners

* NORTH AMERICA: Christine Murakami from Columbus School for Girls, Ohio

All of this will be happening at the same time as our St John mentor workshop and pilots, which take place over ten days (May 24 to June 2).  We'll be training 40 new mentors, many for Haiti, and working with 60 elementary children from the islands three schools.  So all summit attendees will get to see XOs in action, with mentors and children working together.  You can also sign up to take the full ten day workshop, which would make you eligible to travel for Waveplace to one of our upcoming pilots.

We're very excited about this event!   I hope many who love XOs from around the world can attend so we can compare stories and solutions.

Find out more and register at http://realness.org.

Please help spread the word by forwarding this announcement to people, groups, and mailing lists you know.

Thanks,
Tim

education team meeting notes

Here are the meeting notes from April, 29. You can also find it on the wiki:

http://wiki.squeakland.org/display/sq/2010/05/04

Greetings,
Rita
------------------------------------------------------------
Rita, Christine, Bruno, Randy, Kathleen, Avigail, Steve, Cathie, Cherry

#1 Squeakfest: Rita showed an outline from Sridhar about how the Squeakfest could be strucured. Avigail
asked if we will exclude elementary school teachers? We will not exclude them, it depends on what kind of
presentations we will get. The call for papers should start soon, submisison via email to UNCW and
education team.

#2 Squeakfest website: Rita will try to update the website, if this will not work, we will start a new one.

#3 blog and newsletter: Cathie suggested to start a blog somewhere and collect information. Since the blog
on Squeakland still isn't working properly, we will start a Google blog and link to it from the website. By
talking about Google we came to the conclusion to switch to Google Groups with the education mailing list
and try it out. Steve created it immediately :)

#4: textbooks: There is a need for a new textbook, a replacement for the powerful ideas. We started to talk
about how this could look like, this is still in progress.

New Squeakland Board

Dear Squeakers,

I'm happy to tell you that we have a new Squeakland Board in place! On
our last board meeting at April, 27 we came up with a list of
candidates, and everyone accepted. We now have Rita Freudenberg,
Cathleen Galas, Walter Bender, Scott Wallace, Ted Kaehler, Randall
Caton, Elliot Miranda, Cherry Withers, Kathleen Harness, Marta
Voelker, Milan Zimmerman, Carlos Rabassa, and Korakurider on the board.

http://www.squeakland.org/about/people/

I want to thank everyone on the previous board for all the work you
did during the last year, especially the leaving board members Kim
Rose, Yoshiki Oshima, and Tim Falconer.

On the meeting, we also discussed how to proceed with the
incorporation of Squeakland. We decided to apply to become a member of
the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC). This is a 501(c)(3)
organisation, and all members will get this status, too. Also, SFC
will handle the tax issues. SFC is focused on free and open source
software projects. We will find out, if Squeakland is eligible, since
we do not only focus on software, but on education, too. We plan to
have monthly board meetings, and publish meeting notes afterwards. Let
us know if you are interested in joining the meetings!

Greetings,
Rita

Ok... SFC has to make sure that Etoys meets their standard or not.
It may take sometime (either to clarify the status of the current
implemention in the way the trunk people did, or get the new
distribution out on the package based implementation; I guess the
former is easier). But hopefully it doesn't take too long.

Of course, I am interested.

Just please bear in mind I probably will need some help in getting up to speed.

One problem I might be facing during the next few days:

We are currently home guests of our son and his family.

They are using a relatively new system to connect to internet, a company that connects via the 3G network.

In the very near future they will be moving, and us with them, to an area where there is no coverage yet.

We all hate the idea, after using this fantastic system, of having to contract and wait for the installation
a traditional connection via cable.

GSoC Squeakland project

Hi, as you may already know, this year Squeak was accepted for the Google Summer of Code program as part of the ESUG organization.

I'm currently working on the Squeakland Education project (details here: http://gsoc2010.esug.org/projects/squeakland-education) and I would be glad if you could check out my progress. I don't mean to bother you but if you're interested and you're willing to help, you can subscribe to the following group http://groups.google.com.ar/group/squeakland-education-gsoc-project where I will try to keep all the discussions, project examples and so on.
Thanks in advance!

Richo

Ps: Sorry for crossposting...

Call for papers ICEL 2011 - Squeak in Chile 2011

This is a message received from Jorge Franco, Primary School Teacher in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Jorge wants to let everyone know how interesting this conference in Chile will be

This message is a nice testimonial to how good and useful was Squeakfest Brasil 2009.

It is also nice to hear from someone who enjoyed meeting the uruguayan teachers who attended that event.

This is Jorge´s message:

Hello, Carlos

Thank you for the support. Yes, we had a nice dinner in Porto Alegre.

It is the first time that the conference happens in South America.
And it is an opportunity for integrating educators, students, and practicioners from all over the world.
The work I´ve seen being developed by educators in Uruguai since I met you in Porto Alegre can be shared in this international forum.
I think that among other educational experiences will be nice to share projects examples based on Squeak software.

This year in the primary school where I work we are starting to trainining and reflecting about how to use softwares such as Squeak and Scratch.
I've shared my short experience related to my particpation in the Squeak meeting last year and a further research of dowloading and experimenting bits of the Squeak book examples.

Best wishes

Jorge Franco

Application to SFC sent today!

Thanks to the diligent work of Cathie and others, we were able to send
the application of Squakland Foundation to become part of the Software
Freedom Conservancy today! We know that the process will take some
time, since the SFC has a backlog for acceptance of projects of up to
three to six months. But this process has now started!
