Thanks for the reply.

To be a little more specific, this is the page that I get:

You do not seem to have the Squeakland plugin installed.
Please download the plugin here and then run the installer.

You could also download DemonCastle1.055.pr and open it in Etoys.

I've tried multiple times installing and uninstalling Internet explorer 8 and the standard explorer as well as firefox 3.

I finally got it to work with firefox 2 in the mozilla archives.

I'm guessing that one of my security settings are locking it out, but I do not know which one. I would rather keep everything in IE8 than move everything back to firefox 2.

The regular etoys program/installer works fine though.

Hi all,

I'm using IE8 on Vista business without problems.
Must check activeX permission on launching the plugin.

Plugin on IE8

Perhaps it's just the javascript that's malfunctioning? It's supposed to detect if the plugin is installed but maybe that is not working?

Re: Plugin on IE8

I guess other possibility would be ...
Staff to install will be decided by only target operating system.
Current installer don't care about IE version.
So legacy plugin was installed to his XP box and that might be
incompatible with IE8...
I will try to reproduce.

p.s. If there is problem please forward this to squeak-dev (I am not

Yes, I think that this would be interesting. Do you think about
something particular or rather about how to add new things on top of
Etoys in general? It sure would be a good idea to have both, teachers
and developers, discussing these kind of things!

Broken links to Kedama examples?

I would like to run the Forest Fire example in Kedama, to see an
example of an Etoys cellular automata simulation. Could you point me
to an Etoys release and version of Forest Fire code that are
compatible, please?

Here is what I have tried so far:

(a) I downloaded the "Introducing Kedama" pamphlet
http://svn.squeakland.org/pdf/kedama.pdf

However the links in Appendix E (page 36) seem to be broken. The link is
http://www.squeakland.org/project.jsp?http://www.squeakland.org/fun_projects/kedama/examples/forestfire2.pr
However the Etoys plugin loads nothing, and indeed /fun_projects/ is
'404 Not Found'.

(b) Instead I downloaded
http://www.is.titech.ac.jp/~ohshima/squeak/kedama/forestfire2.pr .
However that does not run in the current Etoys (Etoys 3.0, build 2177,
5-Jan-2009 ). It shows an MVCMenu which, I guess, comes from the
project loading subsystem:
"Reading an instance of KedamaGetPixelValueTile.
Which modern class should it translate to?
Let me type the name now
Let me think about it
Let me find a conversion file on the disk"

(c) "Gallery of projects" bundled with the Mac Etoys.app download
(http://www.squeakland.org/download/) has 3 Kedama simulations, but
not the one I desire:
ParticlesDyeInWater
ParticlesEpidemic
ParticlesGasModel

Possible ways you might be able to help me:

1. Point me to a version of Forest Fire that runs with Etoys 3.0, or
an updated version of kedama.pdf

2. Point me to an archive of a 2004 or 2005 vintage squeakland release
image (I read reports that "Squeakland 3.8-05" should run
http://www.is.titech.ac.jp/~ohshima/squeak/kedama/forestfire2.pr ), or

3. finally, perhaps you could point me to documentation on how Kedama
has changed from 2005 to 2009, so I that I could try to rebuild the
2005 version of Forest Fire to get it running in Etoys 3.0, though
this sounds unlikely from
http://squeakland.org/download/releaseNotes.jsp . (By the way, are
detailed changes to Kedama logged in Monticello, subversion, a
changeset, or elsewhere?)

My though is we can have more pedagogical added value in Etoys if it
comes or proposes more higher level artifacts, like Kedama, DrGeo.

I know very well the primary school teachers there, the easier they
can get to produce content, the most they will use Etoys.
As it is now, the proposed artifacts in Etoys are for most teachers
too low level. Understand, it need too much investment from the
teachers to produce something tangible, so most of the time they think
"nice, but no thanks, I can't afford it".

Of course, we can alway expose situation where teachers take the
opportunity, but if you look at these situations, there are important
outside support, not exactly the average situation, in the average
school.

I have many though about what kind of artifacts will make Etoys more
teacher friendly. Those ones does not need to be as complex as Kedama
or DrGeo.

I wrote a note about this overall idea of artifacts in Etoys.

Re: Plugin on IE8

Hi all.
I could reproduce the problem.
Both are wrong guess :-)
This is caused by IE8's "ActiveX opt-in feature"; ActiveX controls in
page of non-trusted zone (in Internet settings) needs to be approved.

I or somebody should've done this before. So here is a version that
works in the Etoys and Squeakland image:

  Please make improvements and share.

Wow! That was quick.

This brand new version works beautifully on clicking the green button
("KedamaWorld setup"). I used the current Etoys (Etoys 3.0, build
2177, 5-Jan-2009, also known as Squeakland-OLPC latest update: # 2177,
from http://www.squeakland.org/download/ ) on a Mac.

Thanks Yoshiki: it is a fascinating simulation.
