Re: [R-sig-eco] ecology or environmetrics?

All,

Thanks for the good discussion on what we should and should not include
in our discussions on the list. I think the best way forward is to
think of this list as the discussion side of the Environmetrics Task
View (http://cran.r-project.org/web/views/Environmetrics.html), much
like R-SIG-Geo is the discussion list linked to the Spatial Task view.
Gavin has done a great job of listing many of the analytical approaches
and packages that can be used in the analysis of ecological and
environmental data. This, I think, should be our starting point for
what R-sig-ecology is all about and that will (eventually) be made
evident in the SIG description.

I certainly do not want reject questions on related topics (spatial data
analysis, phylogentics, bioinformatics, etc.), but it would be up to the
poster to do some homework prior to posting to realize that, while
related, R-sig-ecology is not the best place for those questions as
other lists exist for those specific disciplines.

Cheers,
Jeff

[R-sig-eco] Survival analysis in R

Hello all,

Does anyone know of any R packages that allow you to
create Kaplan-Meier survival functions using Pollock
et al's staggered entry design? I've used the
"survival" package some but to my knowledge it
requires all of the subjects being entered as a single
cohort at a single time. Thanks!

This seems to return something that might be of interest:

The first hit (of two) specifically mentions staggered entry. That might
be of use?

Emacs, of course, especially the modified version distributed by Vincent
Goulet:

Emacs + ESS (or XEmacs + ESS) is my editor of choice for R. As I'm on
Fedora (linux) all this is easily available from my distro's package
manager. If by 'PC' you meant MS Windows, then John Fox and Vincent
Goulet both have useful info to help you get started, both a linked to
from the ESS web site:

Tinn-R is a very good text editor specifically modified to work with R. It
allows you to submit individual lines or groups of highlighted lines to R
with simple command key combinations. More information can be obtained at:

[R-sig-eco] Nice R blog

Hi all:

I just stumbled upon this blog run by James Forester, which is focused on R tips useful to ecologists, and wanted to pass it along.

http://quantitative-ecology.blogspot.com/

The sidebar lists some other R blogs, most not dedicated to ecology.  If you know of (or run) other ecological R tips sites, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Cheers,
Phil
