This question raised at the beginning was asked by a person who was using
nothing, and was advised to use ALP.

So the issue was ALP vs Grouped Arrays. I suggested other alternatives (4D
Column, 4D View) and once 4D 2004 comes out - GridTool.

Sadly (again until we can use 2004) there IS NO ALTERNTAIVE to scrollable
arrays if you prefer not to use a plug-in.

It's DES Bouillons, for future reference.

" I do not believe that the requirements will ever be other than that in
this implementation"

I cannot begin to tell you the number of projects I've come into where a
system was FAR bigger than was originally "designed".

Look up an interesting article called A Big Ball of Mud, which well
describes what happens to software over time.

Another article called Toward Estimating Software Value makes the point that
the capital VALUE of software can be determined by how ADAPTIBLE the
software is to change. I have a bias it is true..to try to develop in such
a way to make change easier to deal with. That's why I TRY (and do not
always succeed) to chose alternatives that provide flexibility.

Not all agree. There is another school of though that says "do the
SIMPLIEST thing possible." My problem with that thinking is that, if you do
the SIMPLIEST thing possible at each step of the way, over time, you end up
with a Big Ball of Mud. And a Big Ball of Mud is VERY, VERY difficult to
change..and therefore has less value (even if the software "works") than

Maybe this is obvious but have you checked your code for any instances of

before I used Netscape and then Eudora.
I also played around with Claris Emailer (very simular to PowerMail)
Apple Mail and Encourage.

PM is just doing things for me fine.
Specially I can receive and send messages in different languages, for
example in Japanese.
No other mail client is doing it so smart as PowerMail.
It's not an html mail toy its just a mail client, but a fine one.
One very nice thing is also the PowerMail mailing list.

RE: 4D Backup mystery

We wrote a special interface that opens up a window on the Server. It does
several things, one of which is to lock users out from logging in, if we
choose to do so. This feature was added just so we could start a system up
and immediately lock everyone out so we could perform a full backup.

Re: Another 4D View question - appending rows or columns

Thank you for that Bart,

Yes i was looking at the 4D View area as a workspace rather than as a
display widget, and was hoping to avoid the need to create arrays (or
using fields).

I see your point. Having said that, I think it would be a nice
addition (and not too difficult to put in I think) to have the commands
"append row", or "append column". . . so that people like me can use
the grid tools in this way.

Hope 4D is listening.

Best,

Jeff Edwards

Has a bug been submitted to 4D about this?

It is great to have finally found out what was slowing my whole system

Dropping out of Custom Menus

I've developed a bug in my system where it's dropping out of the custom
menu environment and back into User mode.

Can anyone give me a short list of likely causes?

I've been running through the code for 2 weeks now and it seems to be
executing properly, with each window open matched by a single close,
but it somehow still crapping out back into user mode.
I was thinking that one too many "Cancel"s was causing the windows
opened with a dialog command to close, but that doesn't seem to be the
case either.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

	Andy.
