You're right, Nick. 4D has lied way too many times to you. I don't know
how you put up with it month after month, I really don't. Your ability
to persevere is extremely impressive. I get the feeling that, long
after the rest of us have all given up on 4D because of it's lack of
strategy, and its habit of deceiving its clients, you'll still be here,
the lone sentinel, sending messages to the NUG, and responding to
them... which will be great for you because there will finally be
someone that agrees with you.

DataPulse real world experience

My real world experience with DataPulse has so profoundly changed the
way I approach a 4D project, that I thought I would share it with the NUG.

I first started using DataPulse near the end of 2001 when I was given
the opportunity to take over a project from another developer. I hate
working with someone else's code so I decided to propose a complete rewrite
using the previous version as a base. I used DataPulse to reverse engineer
the old version. I then created a new structure within DataPulse based on
the old and prepared a written proposal with DataPulse printouts that,
thanks to DataPulse, I credit with winning the contract.

When I was ready to start, I had DataPulse add the proposed structure to
a Foundation shell. I was able to do this one module at a time, over the
course of the next year. DataPulse has also been a key player in helping me
map data from the old structure, which continued being used in production,
to the new structure.

During the course of the year I continued to maintain an up to date
version of the structure within DataPulse. Whenever I needed to add a new
feature to the database that involved structure I first conceptualized the
new structure within DataPulse then exported the new structure components
from DataPulse to the project database. When it came time to switch the
client from the old version to the new in early 2003, I firmly believe that
using DataPulse's modeling features during the development phase made that
transition easy and seamless.

I am now reaching the end of the project and cleaning up loose ends. I
had 70+ tables that, due to a switch in methodology, were no longer needed
and bloating the structure. Yesterday I used DataPulse Gold to delete those
tables. The process was absolutely painless. It took less than 30 minutes to

Re: 4D View: Is there a resize column event?

Actually, it doesn't seem to generate a PV On Clicked event. The only option
I seem to have is to check it in the form's On Plug In event... And I'm a
little afraid to run quite so many plug in commands to get the column widths
that often. I may try it and see what the performance hit is...

4D View can be so powerful sometimes, and yet still has holes that make me
batty. Can I get text wrap someday, please? :*)

That did it - thanks very much!

Re: 4D View: Is there a resize column event?

Justin,

Take a look at the source for the 4D View Helper component:

 <http://www.DataCraft-Inc.com/Files/Macintosh/ViewHelper/ViewHelper101.sit>

 <http://www.DataCraft-Inc.com/Files/Windows/ViewHelper/ViewHelper101.zip>

It detects column width changes and resizes the last column to fit the
available space. Sorry, I don't remember offhand how I detected the column
resize - but you should be able to figure it out from the source.

4D web server design - way to go

I have just looked through the 4D example data base Snap-e which shows a
way to do what I want.
However in its documentation it keeps advising that that this may not be
the best way to go and that other examples should be looked at.
Where can I find such other examples to consider?
Thanks
Roger

Re: 4D web server design - way to go

Lots of people have claimed good things with Active-4D
It does look like quite a big learning curve is it
Hence the dilemma
