GHC 6.12.3 is now out. Revised 2010.2 timetable

GHC 6.12.3 came out today, and the desired extensive bug fixes are in!

  * http://bit.ly/9luq7x
  * http://bit.ly/9olTCN

I've revised the Platform release timetable based on this delay:

  http://trac.haskell.org/haskell-platform/wiki/ReleaseTimetable#a2010.2.0.0

In particular, it calls for the release on 2010.2.0.0: July 4.

Comment (by j3h):

 I have attached a patch against the Haskell Platform 2010.1.0.0 Unix
 installer that provides a --enable-opengl flag to the configure script.
 The flag defaults to "yes", so unless the user supplies the flag, the
 build is not altered. In order to try it out, unpack haskell-
 platform-2010.1.0.0.tar.gz and run:
 {{{
  $ patch -p 1 < haskell-platform-2010.1.0.0-optional-opengl.patch
  $ # I didn't include the result of running autoconf in the patch
  $ autoconf
  $ ./configure --enable-opengl=no
 }}}
 This patch also disables installing the haskell-platform-2010.1.0.0
 package into the GHC package database because it depends on OpenGL. I
 think this patch ought to be relatively uncontroversial because it doesn't
 alter the contents of the package.

 To back up Trevor's argument, I have wanted to install Haskell Platform in
 server environments when I only want to build non-graphical programs. It
 would have been nice to benefit from the standardization of Haskell
 Platform without having to install unnecessary dependencies in my build

I managed to build regex-posix on Windows, but never got around
submitting my changes to the maintainer - I am not sure that my patch
doesn't break things on the *nix side. Maybe I'll do that for the
2010.2.0.0 release - a working version on Hackage simplifies life for
me too.

That darcs repo and package version are the ones I was referring to!-)

But before I look into patches, I would like to understand how
things are supposed to work. Also, others have patched already,
just not sent the patches to you, so there seems to be something
more going on.

The problems are not actually Windows-specific, it just so happens
that Windows is one OS on which one would like to use the in-package
C-library. So if you could clarify how to build the package that way,
it should also work on Windows, using mingw/msys.

Don: was there anthing wrong with the draft modifications
I sent you in May (link to release timetable under lambdabind
icon, a single status message below the whole group)?

http://projects.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell-platform/2010-May/000972.html

Of course, the status message would be different now
(that is the point of having one). And if you would like
to render the message inside the design, that is up to
you (I'm just after having some minimal information
directly available, and the rest easier to find).

Just extremely busy with a hard deadline at the end of this month. I
should resurface after that.

Comment (by j3h):

 I have also added a patch that applies against the haskell-
 platform-2009.2.0.2 Unix installer that provides the same --enable-opengl,
 and additionally an --enable-editline flag. Sorry for conflating those two
 separate features into one patch. Just like the previous patch, this one
 needs you to run autoconf to generate the configure script before
 configuring.
