Hi,
the live DVD image of KDE4.3RC3/OpenSolaris is available at
http://www.genunix.org/ [2GB]

In addition to the standard OpenSolaris CD content*, Korona** comes
with an almost complete KDE environment - 22 KDE packages plus
localization to 57 languages and 38 supporting packages AND
Konversation (no Amarok though, the recent versions don't build
correctly). The live DVD boots right into a KDE session.

There was next to zero testing and some things are known to crash, but
overall it's quite stable and there is at least one person already
running it as his regular desktop (not me).
Bug reports with patches are welcome; without them not so much as
we're still concentrating on making some packages buildable.

The best places for queries are at
http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/category.jspa?categoryID=107
and

no, it boots and runs on top of opensolaris.

as to KDE4.3 for Solaris, I think there were/are efforts to get it to run
on S10 as well, but currently as I understand it most efforts are geared
towards opensolaris.

Sorry, I meant the KDE 4.3 piece. We use Citrix XenApp for UNIX and Sun Rays here so we are stuck with Solaris
10. We still have KDE 3.x in use here. I would love to be able to get to KDE 4.3. :-( But thanks for the info!

NP; I'd suggest you go to the various sites where these things are being
documented; start with http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Solaris

AFAIK ade is in close contact with SunRay people. Having KDE running
on SunRays efficiently is apparently not just a matter of having it
compiled: http://blogs.fsfe.org/adridg/?p=167

I believe the project should be still buildable on s10 with some
effort. it definitely was with kde 4.1.3

Solaris 10

Hi,

I was discussing with some guys in #solaris <at> freenode.net . They said that KDE does not run under Solaris 10, just under OpenSolaris based dists. But I've read about KDE on Solaris 10, in blastwave for example.

Can someone clarify this to me?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
AFAIK only KDE 3.4 is available for S10

You might be able to compile KDE 4.1.3 following the steps at
http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Solaris, also there are some
binary packages for S10/X64 there - I don't know their status.

As regards the current KDE 4.3 on S10, I have no idea, although I know
that ade is doing some builds of the 4.3 repository on nv 115 so it
may be possible to build it with some effort.

regards

There are a few releases done for KDE 4 on Solaris 10. You have KDE 4.2.4 and 4.3.0 (both 32-bit and 64-bit
versions). One copy is stored on the http://solaris.bionicmutton.org website built on Solaris 10 and
OSOL snv_111b (aka OpenSolaris 2009.06). The merged distribution of KDE 4.3.0 and OSOL comes on Korona
0.0.2 (http://www.genunix.org/dist/korona/Korona-0.0.2.iso). Use this to help review work on KDE
4.3.x work on Solaris 10. Belenix is also releasing KDE 4 on Belenix 0.8.

Recommendation Note: Only use KDE 4.3.x and higher for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris 2009.06-based distros.

Blastwave.org maintains KDE 3.5.10/Koffice 1.6.3/Amarok 1.4.10 for Solaris 8-10 and
OpenSolaris-based distributions. KDE 3.4.3 is no longer used at Blastwave.org.

Re: Solaris 10

Hi,

KDE-4.1.4 is the latest version which can run on Solaris 10 (due
missing python >= 2.5, libxcb support and few others which are needed
for 4.2 and higher).Yes, you can kick off Xserver and old python and
put the new ones, but people are using S10 due its stability and
maintenance and I wouldn't recommend do this. I was trying build KDE
with minimal or zero impacts to own S10 system all the time. I have
KDE 4.1.4 on Ultra20m2 with SOL 10 U6.

When I have a time, next month or two, I can provide SVR4 packages for
S10, but without any guarantee.

Ben Taylor's 4.1.3 SVR4 are there ...
