KDE 3.0.2 problem on some servers

Hi,

We have a couple of Exceed Solaris 2.8 servers on our project.

I have built KDE 3.0.2 from source, and everything is ok for those of us using
Sun Ultras (barring teething problems). However the guys using Exceed are
having problems, differing in nature, but always invoving some kind of hang
on startup.

In particular I think there are problems trying to restore sessions and kicker
doesn't work that well. I apologise for being vague - I can give more
details if you tell me what to give. I guess it could be a DCOP issue as
well.

KDE 2.2.2 ran perfectly on the servers in question.

Any help would be great, I am lost here, thanks.

Regards,

Tony

Sorry for replying to my own post...

I should point out that when the desktop does appear (this happens quite
randomly), it is possible to open an xterm via the "run command" command, but
the icons on the kicker and desktop don't work. They appear to be loading
the program, then nothing happens.

Re: install qt pkg error

yeah i had the same error with qt and one of the other pkg's, though it made
no difference to kde so i never bothered to look into it further.

KDE3 on two displays

I have KDE3 running sucessfully on Solaris 9, with two frame buffers. One is a 24bit (for the Ultra2 Creator) the other is a simple cgsix (8 bit). I am using xdm and starting KDE with "startkde" from my .xsession file.

I would like to run a different window manager (fvwm2) on the cgsix (:0.1) and limit KDE to the 24bit card (:0.0). I run another window manager first on :0.1 successfully, but it still launches kdesktop and kicker to that display. Setting KDE_MULTIHEAD=false (and exporting it) from my .xsession doesn't do anything.

My other option is to reduce the color pallate on the second display, but I'm not sure how to do that.

here is my .xsession file. NOTE: I am currently testing with twm. If i can get it working, I'll install fvwm2.

-- start .xsession --
#!/usr/bin/bash
. /etc/profile
. $HOME/.bash_profile

KDE_MULTIHEAD=false
export KDE_MULTIHEAD

DISPLAY=":0.1"
export DISPLAY
twm -s &

DISPLAY=":0.0"
export DISPLAY
startkde
-- end .xsession --

Thanks in advance!

crle

Hello,

I saw your reply on mail.kde.org site about using crle. Well, i used it for
the first time on my Soalris 8 box and i didn't use -u option and as you
know it overwrite my default library path. System is totally screwed up now.
I was just wondering if there is any way around or i have to reinstall the
OS from scratch.

Thanks,

I don't see an option -u in the man pages.

The (unchanged) default configuration on my (non-KDE) Solaris 8 box is:

Default configuration file (/var/ld/ld.config) not found
Default Library Path (ELF): /usr/lib (system default)
Trusted Directories (ELF): /usr/lib/secure (system default)

The rest of the library paths is set using LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

If you refer to the instructions that come with precompiled KDE3.0.1 packages

Reinstalling a system because of path problems is a rather drastic action.
Better read the crle man pages carefully and setup your paths in the right
way.
If your machine doesn't work in single user mode either, you might try to
mount the filesystem from another machine and setup the file
/var/ld/ld.config with your paths.

Greetings,
eva

It happened to me once as well, it's not too bad as long as you can
still log in as root.
To put your system back to a usable state, you can use:

crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l /usr/lib

As for myself, I don't use LD_LIBRARY_PATH anymore, only crle.
And when I need to update it, I don't use the -u option, I first type
crle, which gives something like this:
# crle

Configuration file [3]: /var/ld/ld.config
   Default Library Path (ELF): /usr/lib:/opt/gnu/lib:/opt/gnome/lib
Trusted Directories (ELF): /usr/lib/secure (system default)

Command line:
   crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l /usr/lib:/opt/gnu/lib:/opt/gnome/lib

The 'command line' part is what was typed to configure it.
So I copy/paste it, add my new library location, and send it back:

# crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l
/usr/lib:/opt/gnu/lib:/opt/gnome/lib:<path>/lib

Hope this helps,

Laurent

Ad infinitum...Any ideas? Other apps seem to link with this library just fine.

BTW, Qt is under /opt/qt, and KDE is built to /opt/lde.

Thanks!

Ad infinitum...Any ideas? Other apps seem to link with this library just fine.

BTW, Qt is under /opt/qt, and KDE is built to /opt/lde.

Thanks!
