Possible GSOC ideas

I have some ideas for possible projects you may want to mentor for
GSOC, fitting with the theme of "polishing something existing". These
may not be good projects, or you may not have time this year, but I at
least wanted to bring them to your attention:

1, Implement sorting and filtering by dimension, width, length, pixel
count, or aspect ratio. If you need to find an image for a
presentation or wallpaper this is very important. Even dolphin
implements sorting by resolution now, but gwenview does not.

2. Port gwenview to dolphin's new file view. This allows for better
performance and more fluid layouts.

3. Improve the gwenview kpart so it supports things like the thumbnail
view and next/prev buttons.

Closing the mailing list

Hi!

Just a notice to let you know I am finally closing this mailing list. The
Gwenview forum [1] is here to help for user-related questions. I may create a
gwenview-devel mailing list on KDE servers if needed.

Since closing this list means removing access to its web archive, I downloaded
the whole archive, removed the spam from it, obfuscated the email addresses
and uploaded it to http://gwenview.sf.net/gwenview-general.mbox.bz2

Should you need a non-obfuscated version of the mailing list, contact me
directly.

Regards,
Aurélien

store meta in EXIF / IPTC?

Folks;

being rather new to KDE (after having used mostly GNOME and XFCE for the last
15 years), I stumbled across gwenview and immediately found this to be the
image management app I have been searching for, all the time - it seems just
the right kind of "a-bit-more-than-a-file-manager" that I need to keep track of
the images on my drive. With one exception, and one feature dearly missed: I
like using tags, "star" ratings, descriptions and all these things on my
images. gwenview does rather good at doing so, but unfortunately this
annotations made to images are lost as soon as I copy images somewhere.
Expectation would be to (have an option to) have these things stored directly
within the images, using EXIF, IPTC or whatever else comes in handy here.

Is this somewhere on the roadmap? Are there any issues open about that? Is
there any workaround to achieve this?

TIA,
Kristian

Moving to a forum

Hi all,

I recently asked for the creation of a forum for Gwenview on forum.kde.org. It
is available here: http://forum.kde.org/viewforum.php?f=213

I am planning to deprecate this mailing-list in favor of a forum. I think a
forum is more appropriate for the following reasons:

- Forum do not require setting up individual passwords for every topic you are
interested in.

- It is easier to join an existing conversation on a forum you just discovered
than on a mailing list you are not subscribed before.

- It is easier for non-technical users to join a forum. These days discussions
on the mailing list are not technical, so I think it is more appropriate.

Hi,

I am trying to 'Move To' some files which have a : in their filenames.
Nothing happens, and I get an error message in the konsole:

gwenview(7363) KFileWidget::setSelection:
"2011:02:22-09:01:29_DSC_8241.JPG" is not a correct argument for
setSelection!

Thanks

Automatic reload of images in slideshow mode

Hi all, my first mailing to the list.

I have an old laptop with a shared folder of images that display a slideshow with Gwenview on a large screen. Whenever someone adds images to the folder I have to stop, and the restart the slideshow for new images to load. Is there a way to either load new images automatically, or remotely reload the folder?

Thank you in advance

Person tagging for Gwenview using Nepomuk

Hi Gwenview Developers,

I'm Phaneendra Hegde, a KDE GSoCer(2011) , a comp.sci student from Bangalore India. I have successfully completed my nepomuk related gsoc project 'Fancy Bookmarking for konqueror and rekonq' . Now I'd like to continue my work with KDE, Nepomuk, other KDE projects as well. My mentor Sebastian trueg(Nepomuk Maintainer) told me about person tagging project in gwenview using nepomuk. I have already gone through gwenview source code and found it very abstract with respect to semantic information. Our plan is to provide features for tagging PIMO:Persons in gwenview. Since gwenview is already integrated with nepomuk , tagging feature is not going to be a problem with respect to implementation. I'm taking this project along with one of my friend. Now I'd like to ask few questions regarding the next step in this project -

  • I have planned to create a search box in the information panel using which one can search for PIMO:Persons and can relate the image with the same person.
  • A label below search box which shows already linked persons and provides link to open those persons in KAddressBook.
  • In future , providing a actual ,easy photo tagging just like facebook image tagging. Using a rectangular box  for selecting a person from image and linking the same with Persons. This is not possible because there is no standard ontology defined in Nepomuk for defining a part of the image. Once we have some ontology for doing such stuff we can easily implement it. Also there is no automatic photo identification tool in KDE (AFAIK) , so in the beginning step we are thinking about implementing a manual photo tagging just like normal string tagging.
Now I'd like to hear from you. I welcome your valuable suggestions , comments and guidance.

Thank you :)

Scaling options missing in KPart in 2.7.0

(If this is a double-post, ignore it -- I believe I sent it to an NNTP
server other than Gmane's one the first time.)

Hello,

Today, I ran an update on my Arch Linux system, installing KDE 4.7.0 with
Gwenview 2.7.0. Before the update, when using the Gwenview KPart in
Konqueror, the "View" menu and the right-click menu contained the four
menu items controlling image scaling: "Actual Size", "Zoom to Fit", "Zoom
In", and "Zoom Out". But in the new version, they do not show up, and the
keyboard shortcuts for zooming in / out (Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-) don't do
anything. Therefore it is always in "Zoom to Fit" mode. (They are still
present in the full Gwenview application, though.)

Is there some reason why these have been removed from the KPart? I often
used the scaling options (especially "Actual Size") when viewing images in
Konqueror, and I'd like to have them back.

P.S.: Thanks for writing Gwenview.

Export to iPad 2

Hello,

I'm trying to export photos to my iPad 2 (iOS 4.3.3) with Gwenview 2.6.0 and kipi-plugins. However, when I choose Export to iPod, I get a message saying "no iPod was detected". Is iPad supported? What am I missing?

Thanks,

M. Oliveira

Portable any map format.

 Hello gweenview list readers.

I'm not sure that gweenview support portable any map format (perhaps the files i have tested are not well formatted).

This format does not seem to be supported by the default readers of some distributions (slackware and
ubuntu at least). Do you know some reasons of this poor support (patent problem, buggy specs, ...) ?

Would you accept this feature in Gweenview ? Can i purpose my help to enable this format in gweenview ?

Thank you for your reading.

Paul.

P.S. : could you cc my address for reply please ?

feature request

Hi,
I have recently used IrfanView on Windows. It had a quite useful feature,
which would be nice to have in gwenview as well: when copying or moving a file
somewhere, a 10-element choice list of destination directories is presented.
The last-used is selected by default, but any other can be selected by a
single click, and voila, the file is copied/moved there.
I find this very useful, when sorting my pictures. Currently, one has to
navigate up-and-down in the directory structure if subsequent files are not
always copied to the same destination directory.
Thanks
Daniel
