Musical envisioning: Conservatory

Hey there :)

I have been considering the boost of a new project for a while. I have
finally managed to have a brief discussion with my very good friend
(in the CC field) last Saturday, who used to be a student in a music
school for years and is still playing guitar for fun in a band even
nowadays.

We would like to initiate a music and instrument teaching and learning
application for educational purposes. Here you can find the design
draft in the documentation folder:
http://quickgit.kde.org/index.php?p=scratch%2Flpapp%2Fconservatory.git&a=summary

Perhaps, it would be more readable on the http://community.kde.org/
site. At any rate, I used to be a hobbyist musician leading a Rock'N
Roll band and played some Jazz as well during the University years. I
would like to get back a bit more to this pastime activity again. It
would probably be a good occasion for that, and even contribute back
to the open source community and our cozy KDE project.

Dislaimer: the design documentation is still in a draft format,
nothing set in stone. I would just like to invite others to an open
discussion even about the vision. It is a quite big dream and
envisioning, I know. :) I think, if the project is led by sane roadmap
plans, clear and achievable goals in mind, it is going to be all fine.

Best Regards,
Laszlo Papp

Root backend for Cantor

Hello!

With the number of Cantor backends growing steadily, and a GSoC idea published for another, I thought I'd jump back on that bandwagon as well. A tool that is very popular especially among physicists is ROOT, the data analysis framework from Cern (http://root.cern.ch/drupal/). It contains an interpreter for C/C++ with an interactive command line, as well as support for loading source files.

As a Physics student, both myself and my classmates have used it for several assignments, so I'm confident I'll be able to integrate all the applicable features into Cantor. It has all features expected from a numerical calculation system (linear algebra, algebraic and differential equation solving, minimization, numerical integration). It also has an extensive plotting library.

I'm especially interesting in writing a backend as part of GSoC, so I'm wondering if anyone is prepared to be a mentor. I know there already is a similar idea for a Python backend, but as far as I can tell there is already a lot of interest for that one. Additionally, integrating ROOT would definitely be more useful to me. I was involved in Cantor for a while, but got overwhelmed by school obligations lately, so I don't even know how many available mentors there are. On the other hand, I already know the code, so I'd probably need relatively little mentoring. Should I go ahead and write a proposal or is this a futile task? I would write such a thing in my spare time, but that is currently very scarce due to (again) school.

Thanks,
Miha Čančula

Re: Musical envisioning: Conservatory

Hi,

I will definitely have a look at it.
I am also a musician and try to teach as well. This project sound really
interesting.

Cheers

Sandro Andrade also is working with an intern for the same ideal.
maybe you 2 could join forces?

Sure, Spinet is still in its early days. I'm just pushing my students to work
on it til finishing my phd. Then I'll be able to put some effort on it.

Please take a look at gitorious.org/spinet. Suggestions and contributions
are certainly welcome.

See you,
Sandro

It would be easier contributing to it if it was in KDE playground git, any chance it can go there?

Hi Annma,I've been pushing no new projects into KDE until I have enough time to take care of them, just for sake of responsibility. Spinet has beendeveloped by students in their own pace. That's the only reason for it not being in KDE git. No problems to move it there if you think its suitable.
