Research Project With Rocs and Step

Hello People,

A little while ago, a Researcher named Michal Wrobel from the Gdansk
University of Technology got in contact with the KDE - Community Group
asking about the projects, we exchanged a few e-mails and he told me
that he have three groups of 4 students, that are already major in
Enginering, to do a 3 to 4 months project on Open Source.

I talked to him about the KDE-Edu project, and the projects that we
have already in the house, then after a few e-mails, he answered me
this:

---
Hi,
I think Rocs would be great - we have great researchers in Graph
Theory. Second could be Step with 3D improvements.

Could you prepare 3 or 4 sentence describing each topic?
Greetings,,
Michal
---

So, Step Developers, and Rocs Developers ( me included ),
Can you guys prepare a three or four sentence describing a topic for
improvement?

Hi, did he specify a timeframe when that project should run? Also a deadline when he needs the proposal sketch would be interesing.

Since it is a 3-4 months project, I think it should be something big enough to actually spend the entire time; also not too simple that there is an academic challenge...

Here is something I could imagine for Rocs:

Proposal Sketch for "Implementation of Flow Networks":

==========================

* create a plugin for Flow Network Graphs (actually, add sink and source, use directed edges)

* create icons for special nodes of a flow network

* implement some basic algorithms for flows in JavaScript _and_ according examples graphs; this could include:

- Ford-Fulkerson

- Edmonds-Karp

- Preflow-Push algorithm

- ...

* write a documentation chapter in the handbook about this class of graphs and specific methods allowed by this data structure.

* for at least one of these algorithms modify the implementation such that its execution actually _explains_ how the algorithm works (e.g., which series of augmenting pathes are selected...)

Greetings,

Andreas

We don't have anyone on Step at the moment, do we?

We did had, last year. I'm not sure if he stuck with the project,
tougth, if he's not within KDE anymore I'll get in contact with him on
his personal e-mail asking about that.

I am still around. Although I was very busy with my PhD thesis recently and
couldn't do much. But I intend to put some time again into KDE during the next
month. I could help with this project.

That's good to hear,
can you write me two or three sentences on Step topic? =)

Sure. I will work out my plans for step over the weekend. Then I will also
think about some project in step for them as well.

marble hard-coding -O3 optimizations

While working on some marble packaging for fedora today, noticed that it
hard-codes -O3 optimizations in several CMakeLists.txt. Is there some
good reason to do this override of the usual (Release mode or otherwise)
optimization flags? I checked git history and couldn't find anything
mentioning this.

Re: marble hard-coding -O3 optimizations

Yes this has been intentional. I had done this right from the start since
compilation without this flag would lead to unacceptable performance in Debug
mode at least.

Best Regards,

Did you know that cmake provides a "RelWithDebInfo" CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE too? :)
