[kde-edu]: Kalziumfeature: What do you think?

Please have a look at this screenie:

http://ixcp.cip.biologie.uni-osnabrueck.de/niehaus/kalziumfeature.png

This is updated if you mouse stays for 1500ms over an element. Do you think
this can make the small infodialog obsolete? Annma: You never liked my
LMB/RMB-thing so this might please you.

Please comment on this, it is hard for me to code without feedback.

considering the time of the year, you can understand people are quite busy.
I just had a quick look and I find the window too big.
I don't like too much information in 1 window and if you go that way you must
provide the current window way as well.
What I think about the current Kalzium: you need a clear view of what you want
to achieve. What exactly does the user need at first? What does he need as
secondary information? What purpose does the State of matter serve? ...
After you have a clear idea of all that you can start a mock-up and maybe
submit it to the usability team.

Happy New Year to all,

[kde-edu]: Machholz wrong position on chart

Hi Guys,

I've been looking throught he archive for the list and not found an answer
to the following problem.

I have downloaded the latest comet.dat file and kstars refuses to show
Machholz in its proper position. The data from JPL matches what's in the
comets.dat file. KSatrs shows the planets correctly for my location. So I
am befuddled. There is nothing shown in the position I know that Machholz
is currently occupying. Is there some subtle setting somewhere that I may
of missed?

[kde-edu]: Additional

Sorry,

I forgot to add that I was running KStars 1.0 under KDE 3.3.2 on Slackware
10.0 installed from package.

Re: : Machholz wrong position on chart

Hello Shawn,

Please provide more details. Are you sure you are looking at "Machholz
(2004 Q2)" and not "Machholz 1" or "Machholz 2" (Machholz is a very
productive comet hunter!).

If you are sure you have the right comet Machholz, what coordinates does
KStars give for it (give the time, date and location also)?

I have set the time to 00:00 UT on 10 Jan 2005, and the location to
Tucson, AZ, USA. KStars reports the following coordinates for Machholz
(2004 Q2):
03h 29m 05s, +27d 51' 24"

The JPL website
http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/Ephemerides/Comets/2004Q2.html
reports the following coordinates for the same time and date:
03h 30.43m +27d 58.0'

They are slightly different because JPL gives geocentric coordinates
precessed to epoch 2000.0, whereas KStars reports coordinates fro the
real epoch (2005.03), as seen from the observing location.

hope this helps,
Jason

PS- in the future, you can direct KStars-specific questions to
kstars-devel <at> kde.org

Re: [kde-edu]: Machholz wrong position on chart

Hi Jason,

Well that may account for it as there is no listing for 2004 Q2. The
cometsa I was trying were 1 and 2 There is nothing shown in the area of
the sky where 2004Q2 is right now. What name is it under in the comet.dat
file from JPL?

Re: : Machholz wrong position on chart

Well,

I found it in the listing fro JPL. Its there but KStars isn't showing it.
Is there some threshold setting I've got goobered?

Ok,

Here is some more details. This is what I get when I try to run KStars.
It seems about 1/2 the time KStars hangs at this point. The other times it
s runs but the errors are the same:

And Kstars consistantly hangs at the afore mentioned point when I replace
the orig comets.dat file with the new one from JPL...

Re: : Machholz wrong position on chart

Ok Jason,

I'd like to thqnk you for your time. I finally just removed kstars,
deleted everything I could find, and reinstalling. I then used the
downlowd new data from the initial setup, first time run. The dat files
all ended up in my home directory, as they should've, for some reason
kstars was trying to update /opt/kde... Anyway, problem solved.

Thanks again for a great app. I really enjoy having a decent astronomy app
for Linux!
