profile.d for qt3-win32

I was following the compiling instructions for qt3-win32 on a new computer. The
cygwin installation is very recent and does not have an /etc/profile.d directory
so I had to create it. Also, /etc/profile did not seem to process
/etc/profile.d/qt3-win32.sh correctly because the export statements didn't take
effect.

/etc/profile from the new cygwin installation had this:
/bin/find /etc/profile.d -iname '*.sh' -type f | while read f; do
  if [ -f "$f" ]; then
    . "$f"
  fi
done

/etc/profile from an older cygwin installation had this (which I used and works):
for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh ; do
  if [ -f $i ]; then
    . $i
  fi
done

I don't know what the problem is, but the compiling docs should be updated to
reflect this change. Also, it would be nice to say that you can run the
tutorials without debugging output like this: "./t1.exe &>/dev/null &"

Re: cygpcreposix.dll

hm... it's about a big download. is there any way to have the file (my company has a policy to limit total download 15MB for each employee per day) ? for example if I send a message with subject "kde-x.1.2.tar.bz2" to a system then it will response sending me the required file. if the file is too big then it automatically separated into files that able to joined again later.

back to the problem, if I uninstall kde-x.1.2, which file(s) I have to reconfigure to make my system back to normal?

Hi,
you should use the kde3 release instead of the kde2 release.

Ralf,
I've got that message from ksplash, kdeinit, knotify and ksmserver but the message has gone after I install the kde-xlib.
Even too slow but I was happy to see the splash screen. Hoping that I could improve the performance so I download kde-x-1.2.tar.bz2 and install it from cygwin setup.
Now I've got new error message from xinit that it could not found libX11.dll in my path so I cannot get into KDE. I'm sure that /usr/X11R6/bin and /opt/kde2/bin is in my path.
Is the latest library remove this file?

tx for the very fast response

I've been trying hard to find cygpcreposix.dll in my cygwin package (see http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-cygwin&m=101423969806521&w=2) and some ftp sites.
Things that I found in my pcre package were:
$ tar -xvf pcre-3.4-2.tar
usr/bin/pcre-config
usr/bin/pcregrep.exe
usr/include/pcre.h
usr/include/pcreposix.h
usr/lib/libpcre.a
usr/lib/libpcreposix.a
usr/man/man1/pcregrep.1
usr/man/man3/pcre.3
usr/man/man3/pcreposix.3

Is it any way to build the dll from those files or what?

TIA,

[KDE 3.1.1] kded.exe incessantly browses thru file system when idling - high cpu usage for nothing

Hi,

The first symptom was a high CPU usage of ~30% when KDE just sat on
the screen idling. Looking into that, I found out piece by piece:

	1) AntiVir Guard consumed ~10% kded.exe the rest; Antivir
could be turned off. Its statistics showed...
	2) a constant flurry of file accesses in the
c:\cygwin\opt\kde3 tree.

Got myself Filemon from Sysinternals.com to log these crazy<g>
acesses (open, read). Here is short sample (OS is Windows 2000):

kded scans directories for new or changed files.
You can get more informations if you do an strace on an running kded.exe.
Try the following sequence (you need an installed grep and gawk) :

strace --pid=`ps -ea | grep kded | gawk '{print $1 }'`| gawk '$6 ~
/^[a-zA-Z0-9:]+$/ { print $0 }'

On my system I got the following repeated output

 1019 1416425 [main] kded 2328 lstat64: entering
  929 1425820 [main] kded 2328 lstat64: entering

If you get a different output, please let me know.

Just for interest I went browsing the KDE source. This seems to be done
in the KDirWatch class declared here:
http://lxr.kde.org/source//kdelibs/kio/kio/kdirwatch.h
and defined here:
http://lxr.kde.org/source//kdelibs/kio/kio/kdirwatch.cpp

The comments in the header explain how it works. Presumably since FAM is
not available it does the polling option; there's meant to be a
POLL_INTERVAL that defines how often to do that, so either this is not
working or it needs to be increased

I haven't checked if something like DNOTIFY support is available in win32 and is
implemented in cygwin, so I can give oinly a workaround, which could be applied
by creating a file /opt/kde3/share/config/kdedrc or
$KDEHOME/kde3/share/config/kdedrc and adding some settings. General there are
two solutions:

1. Increase the polling interval (for example to 10 minutes)

$ cat /opt/kde3/share/config/kdedrc
[DirWatch]
PollInterval=10000

2. Disable file checking

$ cat /opt/kde3/share/config/kdedrc
[General]
CheckSycoca=false

from http://lxr.kde.org/source//kdelibs/kded/README.kded

42 CheckSycoca: This option can be used to disable checking for new software.
43 ksycoca will still be build when kded starts up and when applications
44 explicitly request for a rebuild of the ksycoca database. The user can
45 also manually rebuild ksycoca by running the kbuildsycoca program.
46 The default value of this option is "true". Checking can be disabled by
47 setting this option to "false".

Hope that helps

Exactly the _same_ output here...:-)
| 638 7129631 [main] kded 1752 lstat64: entering
| 3202 7157666 [main] kded 1752 lstat64: entering

| 622 7689836 [main] kded 1752 lstat64: entering

BTW, when I killed strace (Ctrl-c) kded disappeared from Task
Manager's list. CPU usage dropped down to ~3%, KDE desktop still
worked:-O

This setting does it:-) Thank you. I chose 20000 (20 seconds).

Noisy Floppy unde KDE 3.1.1 beta

I find that I have to put a floppy disk in my 3 1/2 disk drive every
time I use the full version of KDE. Is this a known problem?
