Re: [Vote] Move Apache Harmony to the Attic

Thanks for the details.

well if it's not possible, that's it, no reason to continue on this topic.
At least I see several people appreciate the notion of public-domain/unlicense :) .

so ... Bye harmony and let's hope someone will revive you one day.

Re: [Vote] Move Apache Harmony to the Attic

Hello,

You are right, if they want they can use it with this license but still it's a source of problems. we have
plenty of different licenses out there, MIT, BSD, GPL ... and some more license we surely be created in the
futur, mixing them is not always fun. All of them are not fully compatible. Legal problems are something
really dirty when you encounter them, noone working on open-source projects want to have such problems.

The apache license is ~more or less~ fine today (everyone has it's own preference), but might become a
problem later. To avoid those problems the change can only be done now while the PMC is still here.

Setting it in public domain can also make it revive, forks can start much more easely from it. Several JVM
have ~dyed~ (or are in lawsuit like google dalvik, android) in the last year. Having a few more vm out there
would be for the best, specialy if they are already reliable alternatives like harmony.

Re: [Vote] Move Apache Harmony to the Attic

Hi,
As my understanding, if anyone (inlcuding students) want to use Harmony or
contribute to Harmony.
There is no limitation with the Apache license.

Correct me, if I am wrong.

Thanks!

Re: [Vote] Move Apache Harmony to the Attic

Everyone preach for it's own license preference, it's not the place to debate on this subject.
I personally had a bad experience with opensolaris when oracle changed the license and 'stole' free
developers work (I see it this way).

more than the license the ©Copyright is like a Sword of Damocles waiting in the dark. I trust the apache
foundation but still we don't know what the futur will be. Until a projet is under public domain I don't
consider it truly Free.

If you think the apache license is so close to public domain then it should not be a problem ?

The decision is not mine, and probably some contributor to harmony like IBM will have a word on this, or is it
the PMC decision only ?

Re: [Vote] Move Apache Harmony to the Attic

Hello,

I'm intruding again, before moving it to the attic and while the PMC is still alive.
maybe you could consider moving the project under public domain for the benefit of other vm, student and
university works ? and android by the way (even if I'm not fan of it).

Mail from last year :
http://harmony.markmail.org/message/bzifm5jshpviyyzz?q=public+domain

This will allow other project with bsd-like, mit, ...etc... licenses to reuse parts of harmony more
easely. Don't let all this work go to waste.

See it as a gift to the community :) .

Moving Apache Harmony to the Attic

Back in March I wrote [1] about the choice facing our community to
either find a new goal for Apache Harmony, or move the project under the
responsibility of the Apache Attic project [2].

There has been no significant activity in Apache Harmony since, so it
would seem appropriate to make the move. I will start a vote (on a new
thread) for you to express your opinion.

The Apache Attic project has a separate PMC who would take over
responsibility for the Harmony code repository, mailing lists, etc.
This ensures the continued oversight of the project's assets in place of
the Harmony PMC.

While there will be no more releases of Apache Harmony after it moves to
the Attic, there is no impact to the license or terms available to
users. If a group of people choose to work on Harmony again then the
resources can be reinstated under a new PMC at the approval of the Board.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Apache Harmony over the years!
