DO NOT REPLY [Bug 46804] New: create the method PropertyConfigurator.configureAndWatch(URL,delay)

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=46804

           Summary: create the method
                    PropertyConfigurator.configureAndWatch(URL,delay)
           Product: Log4j
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Configurator
        AssignedTo: log4j-dev <at> logging.apache.org
        ReportedBy: olivier.dupuy <at> pwgsc.gc.ca

Hello,

Not fond in the existing bugs or RFE.
I would like to simply configure from a URL but detect some changes.
The proposed methods
  create the method PropertyConfigurator.configureAndWatch(URL)
  create the method PropertyConfigurator.configureAndWatch(URL,delay)
will behave the same way as the existing
  configureAndWatch(string)
  configureAndWatch(string,int)
but with a URL.
This would allow me to reconfigure my logging in a simpler way than now.

Thanks

DO NOT REPLY [Bug 28647] Add "Flush on Level" capability to FileAppender

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28647

--- Comment #18 from olivier dupuy <olivier.dupuy <at> pwgsc.gc.ca> 2009-03-05 08:58:37 PST ---
I really hope that you will integrate this in 2.0 as in the comment to my RFE
below.
See my follow up comments for a general way to flush whatever the type of
logger or appender.

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41670

This is really something important for production systems to have a decent
flush mechanism with no performance penalty associated to an ongoing flushing.

           Summary: DailyRollingFileAppender with DatePattern='.'yyyy-ww

                    Locale.GERMAN

Using the DailyRollingFileAppender with DatePattern='.'yyyy-ww gives monthly
log rotation if the default locale of the JVM is Locale.GERMAN.

Expected is weekly log rotation as documented in JavaDoc.

I think the reason for this issue is that in method
DailyRollingFileAppender.computeCheckPeriod:
-the RollingCalendar instance is explicitly constructed with Locale.ENGLISH,
which gives SUNDAY as first day of week
-in the SimpleDateFormat instance, only timezone is set. Therefore, in germany
simpleDateFormat uses a Calendar with Locale.GERMAN, which gives MONDAY as
first day of week
Then, rollingCalendar.getNextCheckMillis() returns a Sunday, which belongs to

socket-hub-appender--restrict-bind.patch

Hi,

the SocketHUBAppender opens a TCP server sockets and waits for connections by
clients. It will then send the log events to those clients.

While this is a very cool feature during development it is not desireable to
allow anyone on the internet to connect to this port and receive logging
events.

The attached untested patch adds a new property "BindAddress". If it is set to
a non-null value, the server socket will only bind to the interfaced identified

DO NOT REPLY [Bug 46878] New: Deadlock in 1.2.15 caused by AsyncAppender and ThrowableInformation classes

https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=46878

Summary: Deadlock in 1.2.15 caused by AsyncAppender and
                    ThrowableInformation classes
           Product: Log4j
           Version: 1.2
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P2
         Component: Appender
        AssignedTo: log4j-dev <at> logging.apache.org
        ReportedBy: wyu <at> aquaequities.com

This is about version 1.2.15. For business reason we have to use two
AsyncAppenders to log the same event to two destinations. In the process we ran
into two issues that together cause deadlock under burst of logging

Problem 1 is when an exception object is part of the logging, a
NullPointerException may be thrown. The bug is in the ThrowableInformation
class' getThrowableStrRep() method, in which the access to the 'rep' field is
not synchronized. As a result, one thread may retrieve an array of null values
instead of the stack trace strings. (Basically rep != null but hasn't been
filled up) When this happens, a null is written to the QuietWriter and the
exception will be thrown. We had to use a work around by creating the
LoggingEvent, call getThrowableStrRep() on the event, and use
Category.callAllAppenders().

Problem 2 is there is a race condition in the AsyncAppender.append() method.

DO NOT REPLY [Bug 46878] Deadlock in 1.2.15 caused by AsyncAppender and ThrowableInformation classes

--- Comment #1 from Curt Arnold <carnold <at> apache.org> 2009-03-19 19:19:49 PST ---
The first issue looks like a duplicate of 44032 which has a fix in SVN HEAD.
