hi there,

i've looked through and seems that this issue same as mine. I would like to
submit my information regarding this for your workings. As preload information,
i'm using  1 apache load balance 2 tomcat; but both pointing to one web
application reside in other directory. Thus, the log4j.properties only reside
in that webapp's WEB-INF/classes directory. 

These settings somehow came up identical to what Sachin elaborated. the file
rolls to the next hour, data seems to be logged to the previous hour at times.

based on your comment is this scenario created multiple log4j instances writing
to the same file? is there any work around for the architecture described
above? i hope i can give you as much info as possible for you to identify this
problems.

Re #12: As a rule of thumb, here are a few tips what you should look for:

1. Threads which aren't completed when your webapp is stopped. I'm talking
about threads you (or libraries which you use) start. Do you use a timer,
quartz or something like that?

2. Find out why the code which throws the error thinks it has to run after your
webapp has been removed or reloaded.

Request to improve DailyRollingFileAppender handling of errors during log
rotation.  If an error occur,

        P1.     Old logs [to archive] can be lost.  Can occur if
scheduled-file=name [to archive to] cannot be deleted during rotation

        P2.     It can end up infinite looping if ErrorHandler itself uses
DailyRollingFileAppender

To address above issues, I'm currently use customized version of
DailyRollingFileAppender with the following changes:

        C1.     If cannot delete scheduled-file-name, then continue appending
to existing file (i.e., don't rotate)

I've tried with the latest 1.2.14 and 1.2.15 and the SyslogAppender does not

Most likely you have not configured your syslogd to accept network connections. 

The log4j SyslogAppender is pure Java code so it performs a "network" log even
if logging to local host.  There is an existing enhancement (bug 27363) request
for a native SyslogAppender.  Unless there is something else going on, this
should be marked as a duplicate of that bug.

/dev/log is a Unix Domain Socket and I would think there would not be a means
to reliably write to it in pure Java code.  Can you get away with writing to it
with file IO?  If so, if you could provide a reference or docs?

If not, then this is just a duplicate of the request for a native
SyslogAppender (bug 27363).

I haven't changed anything in syslog from the default installation.  From all
indications and wikis/knowledgebases on the net I was not aware there was
anything necessary to do with syslog beyond adding the facility and location to
log to.  I just tested again and it is a no go, can you verify it does in fact
work ?
