Re: Formal request for change of kn_IN l10n Coordinator

Err..why? If the logic is the larger no. of translations (a paltry 9%), (which to top, were carried out, without letting the current translators/co-ordinator or anyone in any of the other translation communities in the loop and is of questionable quality) then it would be a very bad precedent.

Subject: Formal request for change of kn_IN l10n Coordinator

Hello,
I would like to propose a change in Coordinator for GNOME l10n for Kannada(kn_IN).
The Swatantra.Org [Kannada localisation project] has initiated a team effort in this regard
at http://translate.swatantra.org/main.php and we would like to ensure a sustained effort.
Our team is working in coordination with Kannada Depts. of various educational institutions, with Christ
College(Automomous), Bangalore,<http://christcollege.edu> extending maximum support.
From http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/kn/gnome-2-22 "UI translations 50% (20799/4455/15547)"
From http://translate.swatantra.org/main.php "GNOME 44214->total, 26474->translated, 17740->untranslated, 59.9% and rising.
I am CC'ing the current coordinator(Mr. Pramod).
Currently, I am the Coorinator for localisation of Debian and I would like to take up the responsibility of Coordinator of GNOME Kannada l10n as well.
Our list is <debian-l10n-kannada <at> lists.debian.org>
Thank you.
Regards,

Re: Formal request for change of kn_IN l10n Coordinator

Hi all!

Note that the gnome-i18n team won't take any action if the current
coordinator does not agree. Would be good if you could discuss that on
your side first. It's quite impolite to ask for a coordinator change
without having asked the current coordinator FIRST.

Thanks and regards,
Johannes

Re: Formal request for change of kn_IN l10n Coordinator

Hello Pramod,
[CC'ing debian-l10n-kannada again. Please do not remove it.]

1. Nothing was done in secret.  We started our efforts around a year ago and it took us this long to create a team and get it moving. I had initiated work on Debian and now feel that our team can take this work forward in a manner that benefits the project.
There was bit of a ripple in May 2007 regarding the Kannada GNOME glossary http://www.mail-archive.com/gnome-i18n <at> gnome.org/msg06248.html
2. Apart from doing new translations, we are working to improve the quality of the existing translations as they too contain numerous errors.  No project comes bug free. The question is what are we going to do to improve it.
3. You have been inactive for long periods and Mr. Shankar Prasad(from Redhat) has done quite a bit of work here.
I am not discounting the work that any of you have done but only requesting you to pass on the torch to us so that we can take it forward.
4. By involving various educational institutions we are actually improving the amount of participation and also quality(contrary to your claim).  This is community effort and the spirit of Free(Swatantra) Software.
I hope that you can see the genuineness in my request.
Thank you.
With warm regards,

My first mail to Mr. Pramod regarding coordinating with each other in the localisation of GNOME was dated  23/04/2007.
I have most of the mail transactions regarding the issue. I am willing to submit it if Mr. Pramod agrees??
Thanks.

To be honest, I don't care much about your mail transactions but I care
about the outcome.

Normal action for a team coordinator change is:
* Contact old coordinator
* If he agrees, contact gnome-i18n
* If he does not agree, cooperate with the old coordinator

Only if old coordinator is unresponsive or cooperation does fail you may
ask on gnome-i18n to resolve the issue but if you do that, please say so
and don't ask for a coordinator change but for resolving a conflict.

So far, I haven't see any effort from both sides to cooperate and also
nothing stating that such a cooperation has failed because of various
reason.

So, please, try to sort this out on your side and ONLY if you see no way
you could resolve this team-internal ask us to take action and explain
why you could not resolve it!

Thanks,
Johannes

hi vikram, hi pramod,

the gnome-i18n mailing list is interested in having *one* kannada team
working together on improving the kannada translation of upstream gnome.
i assume we all want to provide a good and full kannada gnome
translation for the kannada gnome users. that's why we kindly ask you
both to join forces and find a solution to work together/maybe merge the
teams. there seem to have been some problems in the past, and we ask you
to please work them out internally.

thanks,
andre
