City University Doctoral Studentships: Centre for Interactive Systems Research

Colleages

Centre for Interactive Systems Research (CISR) is looking to recruit
research students as part of City Universities drive to increase research
student partcipation at the University.

We consider the interactivity of systems but also the importance of
relevant, engaging, and high quality content in them. CISR specialises in
information retrieval algorithms for effective search and understanding
user information needs. We are able to offer supervision in a number of
different area in IR such as:

- Search algorithms: efficiency and effectiveness
- Web log analysis
- Personalisation
- Collaborative search
- User information needs, user studies
- Human information behaviour
- Context learning algorithms for search
- Context-aware applications
- Ambient, mobile, and context-sensitive technologies
- Multimedia needs and retrieval: music, images, video etc
- Disabilities and search: cognitive and physical disability
- Combinatorial Optimisation Problems in IR

We are a centre within the Deparment of Information Science, which is part
of the School of Informatics. We collaborate with the Centre for Human
Computer Interaction and Design (CHCID) and Department of Computing within
the school on supervising research studies.

Overview
========
This workshop will investigate the synergy between semantics and
semantic-web technology on the one hand and analysis and mining of
usage data on the other hand. The two fields are a promising
combination. First, semantics can be used to enhance the analysis of
usage data. Usage logs contain information that can help to better

ECIR Reviewer

Dear Andy,

Regarding the announcement:

ECIR reviewing guidelines

At a recent committee meeting (Dec 2010), we considered the reviewing process for papers, posters, workshops and tutorials. The reviewing process is set out in the call for Bids. The committee confirmed that these requirements ensure that a proper scientific review process is maintained - as demonstrated by the success of ECIR. Groups or individuals interested in bidding for ECIR in future should contact the chair of the BCS Information Retrieval Specialist Group (IRSG) for more information or advice.

I am interested in bidding for ECIR - what should I do ?

Thank you for your soon reply.

Regards,
Jolanta Mizera-Pietraszko

Call for Workshops - CIKM 2011

20th Annual ACM CIKM 2011 Conference

Call for Workshops - http://www.cikm2011.org/callforworkshops

Proposals are solicited for one-day workshops to be held as part of the CIKM
conference in Glasgow, Scotland, UK (24th-28th October 2011,
http://www.cikm2011.org/). Topics should be in the general areas of
databases, information retrieval, and/or knowledge management. Indeed,
workshops bridging these areas, or presenting new perspectives in these
areas are particularly welcome. A full list of current topics of interest
can be found in the CIKM general call for papers - see
http://www.cikm2011.org/callforpapers

CIKM workshops provide a platform for presenting novel ideas in a less
formal and possibly more focused way than the conference itself. The format
of each workshop is to be determined by the organizers, but it is expected
that workshops will contain ample time for general discussion and engagement
by all participants - not just those presenting papers. Workshops that
foster interaction, discussion, collaboration, and group problem-solving are
especially encouraged.

It is highly recommended to use the CIKM 2011 Workshop Proposal Template for
your submission.

Important Dates for Workshop Proposals

* Proposals Due: March 28, 2011
* Notification of Workshop Proposal Acceptance: May 9, 2011
* Individual Workshop Papers Due: June 29, 2011
* Notification of Acceptance: July 29, 2011
* Camera Ready: August 15, 2011 (hard deadline for publication)
