CFP LRE Journal: Special Issue on Plagiarism and Authorship Analysis

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Language Resources and Evaluation Journal

Special Issue on Plagiarism and Authorship Analysis

Guest Editors: Efstathios Stamatatos, Benno Stein, and Moshe Koppel

The vast number of electronic texts available in Internet media (e.g.,
newspaper articles, blogs, online forum messages, email messages)
necessitates automated processing of information. However, it also
increases opportunities for infringement of intellectual property
rights. One important question is whether a text by a specific author
includes another author's ideas, language, or writing without proper
acknowledgment of the original source. Plagiarism analysis is a general
term for a variety of automated methods for identifying plagiarism and
related infringements. In connection with text documents, we distinguish
between corpus-based and intrinsic analysis: the former compares suspicious
documents against a set of potential original documents, the latter
identifies potentially plagiarized passages by analyzing the suspicious
document with respect to changes in writing style. Such passages can then
be used as a starting point for a Web search or for human inspection. In
addition, writing style can also be exploited by authorship analysis tools
to extract meta-data for a textual document. Thus, by analyzing the
stylistic choices of an author, it is possible to estimate the author's
sex, age, educational level etc. Moreover, given that we have examples of
the writing style of a set of candidate authors, we can identify the most
likely author of a new text or verify whether this text is written by a
specific author. Apart from the traditional usage of this technology in the
analysis of literary works, such information is crucial for forensic
applications where part of the evidence is electronic text.

This special issue solicits state-of-the-art methods, tools, and
applications in the area of Plagiarism and Authorship Analysis. The
following list gives examples from the outlined field for which
contributions are welcome (but not limited to):

  - Plagiarism detection in general, in Web communities and social
    networks

  - Cross-language plagiarism

  - Identifying near-duplicate and versioned documents

  - Technology for high-similarity retrieval such as fingerprinting and
    similarity hashing

  - Models for authorship identification and verification

  - Writing style analysis and author profiling

  - NLP- and knowledge-based retrieval models to capture personal traits
    and sentiment

  - Web forensics, community fraud, and new Web infringements

  - Test corpora, performance measures, and evaluation methods

SIGIR 2009: Call for Demonstrations

Demonstration proposals are solicited as part of the 32nd Annual
International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in
Information Retrieval, which will be held on 19-23 July 2009 in Boston
(http://sigir2009.org/).

Demonstrations present first-hand experience with research prototypes
or operational systems. They provide opportunities to exchange ideas
gained from implementing IR systems and to obtain feedback from expert
users. Demonstration submissions are welcomed in any of the areas
identified in the call for papers (http://sigir2009.org/Calls). One-
page demonstration abstracts will appear in the conference proceedings.

Submissions must be in English and consist of an extended abstract
(one page in SIGIR format including references and figures) and an
additional one-page requirements description.

  * The abstract should emphasize what the implemented system aims to
achieve, the major components of the system, the novelty of the
techniques that have been implemented, and comparisons with comparable
systems.
  * The requirements description should identify the hardware,
software and network access requirements for the demonstration.
Network connections and computers with standard Web browsers can be
provided upon request. Proposals to demonstrate systems that require
more than a standard Web browser (e.g. context-aware mobile systems or
virtual reality systems) must explain how the systems will be
demonstrated at the conference.

The only accepted format for submissions is PDF. Templates for SIGIR
submissions are available from the ACM Website (for LaTeX, use the
"Option 2" style). This is also the style that will be required for

DEXA-Workshop on Text-Based Information Retrieval, TIR'09

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
*TIR'09 - 6th International Workshop on Text-Based Information Retrieval*
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In conjunction with the DEXA 2009
20th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications

                 Linz, Austria, August 31 - September 4
                    http://www.webis.de/tir-09

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
About this Workshop:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Intelligent algorithms for mining and retrieval are the key technology to
cope with the information need challenges in our media-centered
society. Methods for text-based information retrieval receive special
attention, which results from the important role of written text, from the
high availability of the Internet, and from the enormous importance of Web
communities.

Advanced information retrieval and extraction uses methods from different
areas: machine learning, computer linguistics and psychology, user
interaction and modeling, information visualization, Web engineering,
artificial intelligence, or distributed systems. The development of
intelligent retrieval tools requires the understanding and combination of
the achievements in these areas, and in this sense the workshop provides a
common platform for presenting and discussing new solutions.

The following list organizes classic and ongoing topics from the field of
text-based IR for which contributions are welcome:

  - Theory. Retrieval models, language models, similarity measures, formal
    analysis

  - Mining and Classification. Category formation, clustering, entity
resolution, document classification, learning methods for ranking

  - Web. Community mining, social network analysis, structured retrieval
    from XML documents

  - NLP. Text summarization, keyword extraction, topic identification

  - User Interface. Paradigms and algorithms for information visualization,
    personalization, privacy issue

  - User Context. Context models for IR, context analysis from user
    behaviour and from social networks

  - Multilinguality. Cross-language retrieval, multilingual retrieval,
    machine translation for IR

  - Evaluation. Corpus construction, experiment design, conception of user
    studies

  - Semantic Web. Meta data analysis and tagging, knowledge extraction,
    inference, and maintenance

  - Software Engineering. Frameworks and architectures for retrieval
    technology, distributed IR

The workshop is held for the sixth time. In the past, it was characterized
by a stimulating atmosphere, and it attracted high quality contributions
from all over the world. In particular, we encourage participants to
present research prototypes and demonstration tools of their research
ideas.

Conference on Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent Technology
(WI-IAT'09)

Milano, Italy, September 15-18, 2009.
http://www.wi-iat09.disco.unimib.it/WI09/WIhome.htm
http://www.wi-iat09.disco.unimib.it/IAT09/IAThome.htm

*******************************************************************
Workshop Proposals Due: ** January 31 **, 2009 - DEADLINE EXTENDED

All papers accepted for workshops will be included in the Workshop
Proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society Press,
which are indexed by EI.
===================================================================

The Program Committees of the 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Joint
Conference on Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent Technology
(WI-IAT'09) invite proposals for Workshops. The Workshops will be held
within the Conference, September 15-18, 2009 at Milano, Italy.

The main goal of the WI-IAT'09 workshops is to stimulate and facilitate
active exchange, interaction and comparison of approaches, methods and
ideas related to specific topics, both theoretical and applied, in the
general areas related to Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent
Technology. The workshops will provide an informal setting where
participants will have the opportunity to discuss specific technical
topics in an atmosphere that fosters the active exchange of ideas.

The workshop organizers will be responsible for advertising the workshop,
forming the program committees, reviewing and selecting the papers, and
guaranteeing a high quality worthy of the prestige and range of the
Conference. All papers accepted for workshops will be included in the
Workshop Proceedings, which are expected to be published by IEEE Computer
Society Press and will be available at the workshops.

The workshop organizers will also have the discretion of editing selected
papers (after their expansion and revision) into books or special journal
issues. Workshops may be full-day or half-day. A full-day workshop should
select 10-14 regular papers, while a half-day workshop should select 5-7
regular papers, from a large number of submissions. The workshop
organizers should ensure the presence of authors of accepted papers at the
workshops. Optionally, the workshop may be started or concluded by a panel
focusing on interesting aspects, controversial issues, or unsolved
problems to stimulate lively, thoughtful, and thought-provoking debate; we
expect the workshop organizers to actively engage the audience and help
them gain a deeper understanding of the issues. The goal of a panel is to
debate and thus panels should always reflect more than one point of view.
