Justification, goals and summary of the workshop
===============================================

Information Retrieval (IR) is a research area that has generated a great
deal of interest in recent years, largely due to the growth of the
Internet. Many different problems that have arisen during this time have
been tackled by the efforts of thousand of researchers around the world.
New advances are spread following the usual scientific channels, i.e.
journals and conferences, keeping researchers abreast of new developments
in the field.

======================= CALL FOR PAPERS ========================

CONTENT ARCHITECTURE: EXPLOITING AND MANAGING DIVERSE RESOURCES
London, 22-23 June 2009

Biennial Conference of the British Chapter of the International Society
for Knowledge Organization (ISKO UK)

The ISKO UK 2009 conference "Content Architecture: Exploiting and Managing
Diverse Resources" will provide a rare opportunity for researchers,
practitioners and innovators from all sectors to share ideas on the
opportunities and challenges implicit in the digitization and networking
of diverse information resources. The Conference will address issues in
the organization and integration of text, images, data and voice -
multimedia and multilingual.

Over the past year ISKO UK (http://www.iskouk.org/) has attracted large
and lively audiences of content and information architects, website
developers, knowledge engineers, information managers and many others to
its afternoon meeting series (http://www.iskouk.org/events.htm). The
conference aims to extend this wide audience to ensure that all aspects
of knowledge organization are represented.

THEMES of the 2009 Conference include:
.       semantic interoperability across networked resources
.       metadata models and architecture
.       retrieval of still and/or moving images
.       audio retrieval
.       user enhancement (via tagging, feedback, etc.) of content
.       multilingual access to mixed resources
.       integrated combinations of media and/or content types

PAPERS ON THE CONFERENCE THEMES ARE INVITED from the academic and
practitioner communities and may present research, case studies or even
success stories! Contributions may be full length (5-10,000 words) or
brief (2-4,000 words). Proposals for posters may be submitted too. Full
presentations will be allowed 40 minutes, including at least 5 minutes
for questions, while brief presentations should occupy a total of 20

FW: [KIDMM] 9th October event: "Making and Organising Knowledge in Communities"

little flood of potentially interesting or connected with ir meetings, this one a bit more short scene

From: BCS Knowledge, Information and Metadata Management on behalf of Conrad Taylor
Sent: Wed 03/09/2008 19:39
To: BCS-KIDMM <at> JISCMAIL.AC.UK
Subject: [KIDMM] 9th October event: "Making and Organising Knowledge in Communities"

Dear KIDMMs,

I've been labouring hard for some days with Bob Bater,
with help from Jan Wyllie; and with support from BCS
headquarters, we are just about ready to announce and
promote our next KIDMM conference, which this time is
organised jointly with ISKO-UK, and under the aegis
administratively and budget-wise of the BCS Electronic
Publishing Specialist Group.

We're billing this as "MetaKnowledge Mash-up 2.0" and
we hope this'll be as fulfilling as the last Mash-up.

The date is 9th October as previously announced, the place
is the BCS meeting rooms in Southampton Street, and I think
we have an interesting prospectus to offer, as well as some
very valuable speakers.

In addition to the speakers, we will make a serious effort
this time to structure an afternoon of small-group discussion.
Not free-form: we have a structured approach to this, which
we believe will capture some interesting perspectives about
how we can build knowledge communities more effectively,
especially using online tools.

There is a Web page up to advertise the event, though it
is still subject to some change:

    http://www.kidmm.org/home/mashup2008/

In the next couple of days I shall craft a text-based
announcement which could be circulated to other communities.

Like last year, the event will be self-financing, so there is
a £20 charge.  The BCS is still not able to offer us an online
booking facility, so as before there is a downloadable PDF form
to send in with credit card information or a cheque.

Like last year, I'm going to arrange it so we have good nosh!

This time we have added a link to an "Event Wax" booking page.
This won't actually register you, but if you are planning to
come, I'd be glad if you could add your name to the list that
way so we have some indication of who intends to come.

Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our
MetaKnowledge Mash-up 2.0: "Making and Organising Knowledge
in Communites"!

Cheers,

Conrad

PS:  Enormous thanks to Mandy Bauer at BCS Headquarters who
will be supporting our event my running the registration
      and administration processes.

evaluation time to facilitate users but also to support evaluators while
analysing data.

ACM SIGIR 2009: Request for mentoring

32nd Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference
Boston, MA, July 19-23 2009.

http://sigir2009.org/

SIGIR is the major international forum for the presentation of new
research results and for the demonstration of new systems and techniques
in the field of information retrieval (IR).

Request for mentoring

http://sigir2009.org/mentoring

The ACM Special Interest Group in Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR)
offers a mentoring program for papers being submitted to the ACM SIGIR
2009 conference. If you would like help with your submission, you may
ask for a mentor: a person who will help you with your submission to the
SIGIR audience through one-to-one advising, usually via e-mail. A mentor
can also familiarize you with the standards and deadlines of SIGIR
submissions. He or she will also help you understand how to align your
paper with the expectations of the typical SIGIR reviewer. Mentors are
volunteers familiar with successful submissions.

Mentors are primarily available for full papers. To request a mentor,
please send an email to Mounia Lalmas at mounia at acm.org. Requests can
be sent between November 1, 2008 and November 17, 2008. No requests will
be accepted after November 17, 2008. Please include:

- Your name and the names of your co-authors.
- The name of your department or school, and institution.
- A plain-text description of your work (a title and abstract is a
minimum requirement).
- Any specific questions or areas in which you would like help.
- At this stage, please do not include your draft paper.

Reasonable expectations for a mentor include giving advice as to the
most appropriate forum for your work, suggesting improvements to your
submission, suggesting how to deal with language problems, or referring
you to relevant research of which you might not have been aware.
Typically, a mentor might spend 3-7 hours on a submission. We carefully
match mentors to mentees, and wish to support you in developing your
work into a high-quality submission with a good chance of being accepted
and published.

Note the following:

- People requesting mentoring must have an almost complete submission
ready for the mentor to review by the date they request a mentor.
- If there is an experienced information retrieval researcher in your
department, a request for mentoring may be declined.
- Reviewers will not be informed of whether a paper has been mentored.
That is, the fact that a paper was mentored is not considered during the
paper selection process.
- A mentor will be assigned 2-3 days after the request has been made and
approved.

Mentors can be requested from November 1, 2008. The deadline for
mentoring requests is November 17, 2008.
