for papers - we had 177 papers and 73 posters submitted. This represents a
significant increase in interest from previous years of ECIR.

Topics

The 67 accepted publications span a wide range of cutting-edge themes
ranging from formal models (5) over document & query representation and text
understanding (5), design and evaluation (8), topic identification and news
retrieval (3), user interests and workspaces (5), clustering and

2nd CFP: ECAI-Workshop on Text-Based Information Retrieval, TIR-06

2nd CALL FOR PAPERS
================================================================================
"3rd International Workshop on Text-Based Information Retrieval" (TIR-06)

A Workshop in conjunction with the
17th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2006,
Riva del Garda, Italy / Aug 28th - Sept 1st
URL: http://www.aisearch.de/tir-06

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:

Intelligent technologies for information mining and retrieval have
become an important and exciting field of research in our
information-flooded society. Methods of text-based information
retrieval receive special attention, which results from the
fundamental role of written text, but also because of the high
availability of the Internet.

There are various techniques and methods being used for text-based
information retrieval tasks, which stem from different research areas:
machine learning, computer linguistics and psychology, user
interaction and modeling, information visualization, or distributed
systems. The development of powerful retrieval tools requires the
combination of these developments, and in this sense the workshop
shall provide a platform that spans different views and approaches.

The following list gives examples from classic and ongoing topics from
the field of text-based information retrieval for which contributions
are welcome (but not restricted to):

TLIR'07 : Workshop on Teaching and Learning of IR

** Apologies for Cross Postings **

First Call for Papers

------------------------------------------------
First International Workshop on
Teaching and Learning of Information Retrieval

                 - TLIR'07 -
-------------------------------------------------

Motivation

Information Retrieval (IR) is a research area that has generated a great
deal of interest recently, largely due to the growth in Internet use. Many
different problems that have arisen during this time have been solved by
means of the devotion and efforts of thousand of researchers around the
world. These new advances are spread following the usual scientific
channels: journals, conferences, forums and workshops. Therefore, researchers
are kept abreast of new developments in the field.

However, it is also very important that both undergraduate and postgraduate
students understand the basis of this discipline, not just with the aim of
conducting research in the future, but also as a way of learning how search
engines work, which are essential tools to use for their own benefit on a
daily basis. IR is a very interesting subject to reinforce the knowledge
acquired in other subjects, such as programming, algorithms and data
structures, user interface design etc. Postgraduate students who need to
research in this area also require knowing the fundamental aspects of the

SPIRE 2006: available support for students attendance

The SPIRE 2006 organisers are pleased to announce that thanks to a grant
from EPSRC and sponsorship from Yahoo! Research, funding is available for
supporting attendance at SPIRE 2006 for up to 25 research students.
Priority will be given to students who present a paper at the conference.

Applications can be made through the conference website from 12 June 2006.
Successful candidates will be notified by the end of June.

CALL FOR PAPERS

SPIRE 2006
13th Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval
11-13 October 2006, Glasgow, Scotland
http://www.cis.strath.ac.uk/spire06/

Submission date: 14 April, 2006

SPIRE 2006 is the 13th Symposium on String Processing and
Information Retrieval. The first four editions focused primarily
on string processing and South America, and were called WSP
(South American Workshop on String Processing). Starting in 1998,
the focus of the workshop was broadened to include the area of
information retrieval due to its increasing relevance and its
inter-relationship with the area of string processing. In
addition, since 2000, the conference venue has been in Europe in
even years.

The symposium will be organized by the University of Strathclyde,

PhD student position at the University of Granada

PhD student position in an Information Retrieval project at the
University of Granada, Spain.

Title of the project: "Application of Probabilisitc Graphical Models to
Structured Retrieval".

Main researcher:

Juan F. Huete.
Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
University of Granada
Spain

The main goal of the project is to develop a Structured Information
Retrieval Systems based on Probabilistic Graphical Models, mainly
Bayesian networks and Influence Diagrams. To achieve this goal, we shall
develop a model that includes the structure of a document in both,
indexing and retrieval processes. This model will be extended in order
to include the preferences of the users and with the use queries that
consider both content and structural knowledge. Classification
algorithms will be used to outperform the capabilities of the system.
All these components will be integrated in a graphical user interface to
facilitate the use of the system. We shall validate the model using both
standard collections and with collections provided by the companies
interested in the results of the project.

The project will take 3 years and the appointment will be for 4 years.

For the position the candidate must have following qualifications:

I see that one of the objectives in the draft constitution is worded as
follows:

"Information Retrieval (IR) is concerned with enabling people to locate
useful information in large, relatively unstructured,
computer-accessible archives. Much of the technical challenge in IR is
in finding ways to represent the information needs of users and to match
these with the contents of an archive. In many cases, those information
needs will be best met by locating suitable text documents, but in other
cases it may require retrieval of other media, such as video, audio, and
images. In addition, IR is also concerned with many of the wider goals
of information/knowledge management, in the sense that finding suitable
content may only be part of the solution - we may also need to consider
issues associated with visualisation of the contents of an archive,
navigation to related content, summarisation of content, extraction of
tacit knowledge from the archive, etc."
