About the Conference

Digital archives/libraries are widely recognized as a crucial component of
a
global information infrastructure for the new century. Research and
development projects in many parts of the world are concerned about using
advanced information technologies for managing and manipulating digital
information, ranging from data storage, preservation, indexing, searching,
presentation, and dissemination capabilities to organizing and sharing of
information over networks. ICDAT 2005 is the third in a series of
International Conferences on Digital Archive Technologies sponsored by the
R. O. C. Taiwan's National Digital Archives Program. The purpose of this
conference is to provide unique opportunities for participants to share
their research results and best practice experiences in the utilization of
advanced technologies for and the approaches to the development of digital
archives/libraries/museums.

Student bursaries to attend CoLIS5 conference in Glasgow

[Please forward to any student who may be interested]

Dear all

CoLIS5 is the fifth in the series of international conferences whose
general aim is to provide a broad forum for critically exploring and
analysing research in areas such as computer science, information
science and library science. The theme for CoLIS 5 will be the nature,
impact and role of context within information-centred research,
particularly in information seeking and retrieval.

EPSRC, The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, has
kindly provided sponsorship to allow 12 UK-based students to attend
CoLIS5 which will take place in Glasgow from 4th-9th June 2005.

Full details of the conference are at the conference web pages
http://www.cis.strath.ac.uk/external/colis5/

Student bursaries cover the following:

     * Registration to attend the main conference sessions (Mon-Wed)
including conference proceedings, conference dinner and social events
     * Registration to attend one of the conference tutorials or
workshops of the student's choice
     * Accommodation in one of the conference hotels for the nights
Friday 3rd June to Thursday 9th June, i.e. 7 nights. This will cover bed
and breakfast accommodation only, additional expenses will be covered by
the student attendee. The choice of conference hotel will be made by the
conference organisers.
     * Contribution to travel costs to attend the conference. CoLIS5

CFP: Web Document Analysis 2005

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

WDA2005: Third International Workshop on Web Document Analysis

August 28, 2005
Seoul, Korea
(co-located with ICDAR2005)

Full CFP available at:

         http://wda2005.blogspot.com/

** Short Papers Due April 15, 2005 **

WORKSHOP MISSION

With the ever-increasing use of the Web, a growing number of documents
are published and accessed on-line. The emerging issues pose new
challenges for Document Analysis. The need is evident for further
discussion to identify the role of Document Analysis in Web
applications.

While there has been active research on Web Content Extraction using
text-based techniques, documents are in fact 2-dimensional entities,
and often include multimedia content. Hence, techniques that have been
developed for image-based documents could prove valuable in the realm
of Web documents, and new methods for the analysis of multimedia
content will be required.

Following the success of the first two WDA workshops in Seattle, USA

CfP: ICML05 Workshop "Learning in Web Search"

Call for papers: one day workshop
(Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message)

August 7, 2005

to be held as part of the 22nd International Conference on
Machine Learning (ICML 2005), Bonn, Germany

August 7-11, 2005
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Workshop Description
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview: The emerging world of search we see is one which
makes increasing use of information extraction, gradually
blends in semantic web technology and peer to peer systems,
and uses grid computing as part of resources for information
extraction and learning. This workshop explores the theory
and application of machine learning in this context for the
internet, intranets, the emerging semantic web, and peer to
peer search. The workshop also aims to advertise and promote
suitable software and data infrastructure to support the
research, and community platforms, open source solutions,
and grid tools for large scale experiments.

CFP: ICML'05 Workshop - Learning with Partially Classified Training Data

Workshop on Learning with Partially Classified Training Data

                                     During ICML'2005
                             August 7, 2005. Bonn, Germany

DESCRIPTION
-----------
Many real-life applications may involve huge datasets in which
exhaustive sample-labeling requires expensive human resources and is
often unrealistic. For example, in Bioinformatics or many Information
Retrieval tasks, labeling data is a time consuming and a difficult task.
For other problems such as remote sensing or medical imaging, labeling
data may require very expensive tests so that only a small set of
labeled data may be available. In some other domains, like targeted
marketing, only a few positive samples are available while unlabeled
examples are plentiful. In all these cases, we need to find ways of
relieving the users of the annotation burden.

We will discuss recent developments, explore new issues and share ideas
for future directions. We welcome papers that address any of the above
questions or that focus on any of the following topics:

  * Learning applications, in Bioinformatics or Information Access
areas, using both labeled and unlabeled data with techniques including:
    - Multi-modal semi-supervised methods: co-training or co-boosting,

CfP: Methods and Applications of Semantic Indexing

Methods and Applications of Semantic Indexing
Workshop at the 7th International Conference on Terminology and Knowledge
Engineering
In Copenhagen Denmark, Tuesday 16th August 2005

****************
CALL FOR PAPERS
****************

http://wortschatz.uni-leipzig.de/~fwitschel/WS_SemanticIndexing.htm

Topic

The discussions related to, and developments of, Semantic Web technologies
indicate that there is an increasing interest in semantic description and
structuring of content. The key applications of the technologies are in the
areas information retrieval (e.g. Semantic Web), document abstraction, topic
detection, and automatic classification.

Here, the term semantic indexing should be understood as an attempt to offer
solutions to all problems related to the semantic description of documents,
comprising the automatic creation of meta data and semantic mark-ups. This
requires new approaches to indexing and abstracting that can greatly benefit
from terminological methods, particularly from the area of term extraction.
The use of existing terminology resources should also be considered.

Therefore, the main focus of the workshop will be to bridge the gap between
classic information retrieval and terminological methods in order to improve
semantic indexing.
We will like to welcome contributions on metadata generation and automatic

INEX 2005 Workshop on Element Retrieval Methodology

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

INEX 2005 Workshop on Element Retrieval Methodology Saturday, 30 July
2005 - University of Glasgow http://www.cs.otago.ac.nz/inexmw

INTRODUCTION
The INitiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval (INEX), and the
University of Glasgow invite participation in the INEX Workshop on
Element Retrieval Methodology. The workshop is to be held in Glasgow as
part of an information retrieval research festival.

The annual INEX workshop examining element retrieval has shown
improvements in retrieval precision, while at the same time raising new
questions about element retrieval methodology. The annual evaluation
workshop focuses on retrieval performance; this mid-year workshop will
focus on methodology.

PARTICIPATION
Opinion papers discussing XML element retrieval are sought. Topics
include but are not limited to Theory, Application, Measurement,
Judgment, and Experience. Note that relevance ranking algorithms are
excluded (they are the focus of the annual INEX workshop
(inex.is.informatik.uni-duisburg.de)).

Theory
What is the perfect collection and what is the ideal way to interact
with it? Is a heterogeneous collection diverse in DTDs or diverse in
content? How should queries of this collection be specified in either a
formal or natural language? When a user provides feedback are they
providing information about the element (e.g. too large) or the content
